Introduction

Castleford is located in the East Anglian county of Castleshire. It can be seen in dark pink on this map. It is an important centre for the area and is near to the urban areas of Norwich, Ipswich and Lowestoft and only 70 miles from London. It is a cultural, commercial and transportation centre for East Anglia and is home to many institutions such as the University of East Anglia and the National Museum of Contemporary Art.

The city is still under construction and this is a small teaser of what is to come. This image was taken in the central area of the city.

This little teaser is just a taste of what is to come. Hope you enjoy. Next update should arrive within a week.

Its Brilliant, once again. Well done Mr East Anglia 3.gif

It reminds me of an areal image I saw of Sheffield, I think......... bah no it doesn't

That's what really strikes me about your cities, they really have a character all their own.

I can't wait for more 2.gif

Wow! This looks interesting. The name brought me here. I live in the real Castleford (West Yorkshire) so i'm naturally interested in how this city develops. From the picture you've posted it already looks like a far nicer place to live than my Castleford!

    Update 2

    First Look

And so here we are, the city is coming along very nicely, the central area is almost complete and the outer-centre is coming along well. Some developments in the suburbs include the stadium and Meadowdale Centre. Here I'm just going to post a few shots of my progress. You will be able to see I am still on pause so no traffic or grown buildings yet but here goes.

    1-12.jpg

    2.1 Ryedale Street

    2-9.jpg

2.2 City Hall and Council Offices

The gate outside the City Hall was originally part of the entrance to The Assembly Rooms but they were destroyed during WWII and replaced with the Council Offices.

    3-8.jpg

    2.3 Smith Place

This is a very popular area for the artistic population and the building with the orange roof in the foreground has recently been converted into a an art gallery.

    4-8.jpg

    2.4 Central Square

The most important public area in Castleford is Central Square which is home to St Luke's Cathedral and the recently rennovated Castleford Library.

    5-8.jpg

2.5 Civic Centre and Peel Street

The Civic Centre is home to a lecture theatre, archive centre, benefits office and travel information. Outside is where the CitiConnect buses and National Express coaches stop. The original police station can be seen across Peel Street which is named after the Prime Minister Robert Peel who was born in Castleford.

    6-8.jpg

2.6 Police Station and Print House

Print House is home to the Castleford Evening News which is the area's daily newspaper and next door is the new police station which was built in 2003 to take over from the old one on Peel Street. It is on the site of a shopping arcade which was destroyed by an IRA bomb in 1996.

Thankyou, Britishness is what I aim for.

Sheffield is a bit grimier than Castleford but I think that picutre doesn't look too far off.

Thanks, the rotation makes my images a bit more challenging I hope, it does present problems with text but we'll have to overlook those.

Honoured to have your first post. I have been to Castleford, can't say I was in awe by its beauty but it isn't that bad. I think this Castleford will be quite distinctly different, nicer and alot more urban. Thanks for taking the time to look.

I like it. Looks realistic and has an urban feel to it. I guess you noticed the problem with the underpass in the last picture?3.gif

I was wondering what happened to Reedwood. This seems to be a rather nice substitute for it! Love everything about it so far.

    Update 3

    Castleford International Airport

It is likely one of the first impressions you get of the United Kingdom is through it's airport. Heathrow? Grimy, grotty, slow, congested. Stansted? Lighter, cheap, bright. Castleford? Fast, efficient, simple. Castleford International Airport is located in Taunton which is a small town just outside of Castleford. It has 3 main termainals; domestic, international and a satelite. It is the 4th biggest airport in Britain and serves most of the East of England and even London.

    1-13.jpg

    3.1 Main Terminal Overview

In the foreground is Terminal One with domestic flights, then Terminal 2A which is International Departures and furthest back is Terminal 2B; international arrivals.

    12-8.jpg

    3.2 Terminal Three Overview

The British Airways terminal and also the heliport. It is reached through a system of underground tunnels. As you can see the land around the terminal is yet to be developed.

    11-10.jpg

    3.3 Terminal One Entrance

This is the domestic terminal and is much smaller than it's neighbour; Terminal Two. It has recently been rennovated. The shuttle to Terminal Three can clearly be seen and this is the main drop-off point for access to T3. Inside the glass hoods are travelators for luggage.

    10-7.jpg

    3.4 Terminal One Station

The RailLink service runs directly into Castleton Peel Station and is a very popular way for arriving at the airport. It can also be used, for free, to connect to other terminals.

    7-9.jpg

    3.5 Terminal Two Departures Entrance

The entrance was remodded in 2003 to deal with the increasing traffic caused by the closure of Castleford City Airport. The two sculptures seen outside were moved from City Airport to the plaza. Also seen is the Castleford International Royal Hotels.

    5-9.jpg

    3.6 Terminal Two Arrivals Exit

The arrivals area is designed for a quick pick up and as such the bus shuttle runs directly to the railway station, T1 and car parks. There is also a taxi pickup area.

    6-9.jpg

    3.7 Terminal Two Station

The second RailLink station in the airport. This one is a major interchange between suburban services in the local area as well as connecting the airport. The shuttle to T3 can be seen also. The connecting corridor was closed in 2007 after a small section collapsed seriously injuring a passenger. It has now been reopened

    4-9.jpg

    3.8 Terminal Three Entrance

T3 is self-contained in that the only way to leave is across the airfield or through the underground tunnels connecting it with the rest of the airport. It is given over to British Airways and also contains a heliport used by Bristow Helicopters.

    3-9.jpg

    3.9 Heliport

Most helicopters leaving from here go to the North Sea Oil Rigs but there are also sight-seeing tours across Castleton and a regular service to Amsterdam and London for executives.

One of the best UK CJ's in my view...this has the potential to be as good as Thames in my opinion.

Great start; hope subsequent updates are upto the same standard!

Wow, beautiful arrangement of the different buildings! I like your airport a lot, especially the entrances, that's very sophisticated!! And excellent use of the newly released 'Soviet' building; credit is given but I don't want to search it now... . The sharpening of the pictures is great and gives a certain atmosphere, looking forward to more,

    Update 4

    A postcard back home

A quick, miniupdate for you folks now. It's a postcard from Thom Wallis who is going to be my kind of mini-character. He's come to Castleford for a little trip to see his best friend and he lives in Reedwood. He's just arrived in Castleford and this is a postcard from hbis first day back.
