    art128: Thanks!

NMUSpidey: SAM is spiffy! Especially with new NAM!

Benedict: Me too, that plugin cleanup put a really dampener on things, but now I'm back thanks to all the awesome people who create all these wonderful custom contents!

dedgren: Thank you for dropping by! Your journal is quite inspirational and has undoubtedly help many others - including me - with your generosity.

ky72x: Thank you, with such heavy use of diagonals in cities, I knew I had to find a solution for them - lucky ped malls are one of them. Although I have to admit plop down all those tiles and trees really consumes time 9.gif

Schulmanator: Thanks 4.gif Truth be told, I'm a little overwhelmed at your own Journal, I've been thinking of posting but there is just so much to see and read!

    Smarty218: Come, shall more cities.

abcvs: For a long, long while, I had the Euro Textures on but no left hand drive and it looked silly 9.gif I drive almost everyday and its so weird watching my sims go the opposite way I just had to fix it. Lucky, the solution is quite simple even for people who are moderately comfortable and capable of mucking about with their PCs. Here's a link, But I'll just write down a simple step-by-step instruction for anyone who wants to switch their sim's driving sides 3.gif

To switch from Right to Left Hand Drive, there are two major steps.

    Part one of two

    1. Locate and go to the directory where you have installed SC4, usually it is C:\Program Files\Maxis\SimCity 4 Deluxe

    2. Within this directory, you will see a folder name English, it should contain a file called SimCityLocale, if it does, you are looking at the correct folder.

    3. Now rename this folder from English to UKEnglsh (not a typo!)

    Part two of two

    4. From your START menu, select Run.

    5. Type in regedit into the field and click OK.

    6. On the left hand directory tree, expand HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > SOFTWARE > Maxis > SimCity 4 > 1.0

    7. Change the Language value by right clicking it and selecting Modify.

    8. Leave it as Hexadecimal and enter 13 into the Value Data field. Click OK.

With these two major steps complete, your sims will now start driving on the Left! If you wish to switch from the Left to the Right - rename the folder to English in step 3, and enter 1 into the Value Data field in step 8 instead.

One step closer to a realistic Auckland abcvs!

jrhnemo: How dare you not post! 3.gif Haha, no, really, thank you for taking the time to look at my Journal and leaving your thoughts!

Shingure: It may be strange, but Didot was a family name of an influential French publisher carried through many generations. Their name was also used as a measurement system for type before more universal measuring standards were adopted. But I must not carry on! More on Didot and its history with the full update!

edmonton_stinks: It was not so in Typographia before the great Plugin Purge of April!

    didotheadlineom4.jpg

In its most basic sense Didot was made as a high contrast typeface, with great exaggeration on the width of its vertical strokes compared with the hairline delicacy of its horizontals. Like Grotesque, Didot is also used as a classification for a group of typefaces that have similar characteristics - most notably its Italian cousin Bodoni.

Didot's most interesting aspect is that it defined modern society in the era when it was widely used in printed publications, however, fast-forward two, three hundred years and its now described as classical, or neoclassical. But the amazing thing is that these descriptions can be used in conjunction with each other, as Didot is both classical in its use of serifs, as well as the overall aesthetics being modern with its clean edges and straight lines.

One ideal that was relevant then - and still is now - was its undoubted relation to the Age of Enlightenment. In a condensed and concise manner, the Age of Enlightenment can be explained as the turning point in which reasoning was prized as a basis for guiding the development of European and some Eurasian countries. This philosophy, in part, was to undermine the class-divide and the power of the churches, some of these ideas carry over to a majority of Western cultures in the form of democracy and equal rights for all.

For today's digital world, Didot was most successfully revived by Adrian Frutiger, someone who we will begin to know very well in the course of this Journal.

Didot's Town Hall, built on the outskirts of its main commercial district, it is surrounded by parklands that allow its residents to transverse to work without criss-crossing traffic on the city's major roads.

The upper-class living within walking distance of the commercial district, yet its surroundings quiet enough for relatively low density housing.

    20251231wx6.jpg

The local aged care facility, close to Didot's youngest citizens - this allows a successful community service program where the children will take time each week to visit the city's older and wiser population for some fantastic story-telling and less rigourous sporting activities.

    20270409ei0.jpg

François Heights is a prime location in Didot, with exceptional views of the city's surroundings and within walking distance to a thriving commerce centre. Nearby is Pierre Station, a beautifully constructed TransContinent Rail terminal.

Due to the increasing population and relentless demand for commercial services, parts of the old city centre has been rezoned for their development. Tarmac roads have simultaineously sprung up to meet the changing traffic conditions.

The new city centre as a corporate world.

Residents of the urban sprawl spreading along the arterial roads has asked for new educational facilities away from the busy city centre, the construction of this large capacity primary school is phase one of a new major civil project.

Oh and I really do have to get the new NAM!  Those red brick streets are funky!

Edit:  Yay!  - Thanks mate!  Almost 500 years later they finally work out which is the right  (left that is) side of the road to drive on!

Neat placement of the town hall and assisted-care facility in the middle of the PMT's, instead of just having them along a street or road. The building variety just seems to get better and better with each update! From houses to train stations, from libraries to commercials, there are plenty of different styles represented in Didot. Which, as you'll come to know, I really like. 2.gif Excellent use of the retaining walls throughout the whole city, they look awesome (not to mention ultra-realistic). However, a few overpasses over that sunken highway wouldn't hurt. 3.gif Great job making that mosaic, too. Another well-rounded update, keep it up! 9.gif

anarchy0029: Thank you, please do visit Typographia again 9.gif

abcvs: No worries, I'm glad they have finally seen the light! And to be tedious, if you want those brick streets with all the tricks, you'll need the NAM, the NAM Essentials and SAM.

jacqulina: Thanks for dropping by and offering your kind words 4.gif

Benedict: One of my goals is to increase awareness (and proper use) of typography! Didot looks good on Ellis Valley currency!

ky72x: Thanks for the comprehensive comment! That sunken highway is actually rather short, and actually ends its run not far from the commercial district of the city centre. I might have an overpass just so the two different sides are connected effectively but its not a priority at the moment - the next phase is a little more urban sprawl and working out the rail network. There are plenty of over passes in the newly developed areas though, so watch out for that!

    RJN: Thanks!

Explodingsims: edmonton_stinks is correct, they do come from SAM (Street Addon Mod), there are also a whole bunch of other street textures for use to bring different characteristics to your cities - make sure to download the new NAM and NAM Essentials to use them to full effect!

edmonton_stinks: Thanks. I was surprised that I've been missing them in my transit menu for so long!

Shingure: Thank you, be prepared for an update within the next few days!

The Big Z: Hey thanks man, I'm excited at what I don't know I'm doing next!

Explodingsims: Those sidewalk mods are annoying at places, I do have one installed atm. One thing I find about custom content is that the amount you need grows exponentially as you acquire more and more of what you think will make your city look good. I'm still trying to fix those pesky diagonals now and then!

Callbat: Welcome! And please do come back for some excellent updates - if I may say so myself 3.gif

    lucidaheadlinezm4.jpg

It seems Lucida has been denoted as a city that must be slowly revealed. Probably because I'm having trouble getting things just the way I want them to be, as such, there will again be only two images for this mini update. But I promise once the diagonal-filler-problem and the tree-planting-problem is resolved, there will be no stopping this high tech juggernaut.

Which brings me to two questions for the readers of this journal:

    1. What do think of those low wealth diagonal filler lots? I-HT does not exactly hire R$ and the look clashes with those green grass lots a little too much. I might end up bulldozing them and just using the good old mayor tree planting technique - that is where I am leaning, tell me if I am correct!

    2. Where the hell can I get Asphalt (darker tarmac) textures for the NAM custom highway interchanges? Lucida has one and it look damn ugly reverting to the grey concrete just for that section - not to mention the noise of a concrete highway!

    20190727nx0.jpg

A strange area where the residents don't fit with the jobs on offer (these are the low wealth grass/tree filler lots I am talking about, they take care of the diagonal problem but as you can see, doesn't fit in well with the R$$$ houses)

    20190901yx6.jpg

A more centralised location of Lucida, again, the residential buildings are in direct contrast to the city's main industry.

COMIC SANS MS! COMIC SANS MS!

No, no, just kidding. As to your problem, I usually just plop trees from the tree menu. It's time consuming and really wears on your fingers (especially if you use a laptop with a touchpad), but the end result looks pretty. Of course, I'm probably not the best cj-er out there, so...

    The walls are nice, though.

    lucidaheadlinezm4.jpg

With the technological advancement of the city driving an almost unsustainable growth rate, a minor problem could suddenly become a catastrophe. As is often the case, a city's external appearance may be pleasant, but underneath this lies a less than enviable layer of society.

One problem leads to another, first to surface was the almost stagnant traffic that (tried to) move through the Central Business District during peak times. This was due to poor, early city planning, and the residents were paying the price. Next was the failing health of Lucida's general population, largely due to the frustrated drivers and the city's continual reliance on the car. Compound this with the steady rise of petty crimes and no real response from the police - except a pay rise or two for the few senior figures.

A major proposal was ordered by the mayor to combat these issues, it required a big response and the result was nothing less than dramatic. Although unpopular as soon as it was released for public comment, the mayor knew that unless it was put into action soon, Lucida would descend into an unlivable and unwanted city loved by none.

In the year 33, the CBD was almost completely demolished. Residents were relocated, businesses were paid to move to another city temporarily, old roads were dug up and new tarmac laid. It was a hard few years as Lucida continued its slide towards anarchy, but as fortune favours the bold, the fruits of the mayor's labour was realised when the new CBD was opened for business. First a trickle of the businesses returned, then it became a flood as the new and old came to carve out a place for themselves.

Coinciding with this major project was the expansion of the Intercity Rail, with two new lines and five new stations commissioned. One of the most important features is its focus on line flexibility, loops were constructed throughout the network to allow effective and efficient looping services that would stop only at selected stations.

As of the year 45, Lucida is on its way to a milestone of 20,000 residents. eclipsing the record once held by Grotesque, and taking the mantle of the most-populous, and arguably most livable, city in Typographia.

    20310623bfy0.jpg

    20310623cdo3.jpg

    20310623dat7.jpg

Although most suburbs were not included in the proposal, the dense residential zone around the Intercity Rail terminal was partly reconfigured due to its close proximity to the CBD.

    20310718rq0.jpg

The old location of the city hospital, deemed to be taking up valuable real estate better suited to commercial services. Also note the layout of roads and small commercial blocks of the old CBD.

    20310721dx5.jpg

One of the most problematic areas in Lucida included the residential areas along the Intercity Rail line. The straight roads and dense housing combined to create hazards for pedestrians and drivers alike. Although public housing was offered to these residents in the proposal, they expressed their displeasure at having to forfeit their houses and having to leave the neighbourhood.

    20380902gt1.jpg

The new CBD is punctuated by The Grande, allowing a dual lane two way traffic avenue to pass through has worked wonders to the traffic - also note the more pedestrian friendly streets.

    20380927auj2.jpg

    20380927bjs1.jpg

    20380927chl2.jpg

    20380927djk8.jpg

The City hospital conveniently relocated closer to residential zones, although the technology sector was not affected directly, the reduction in crime and pollution has made it much more desirable to start a business in Lucida.

    20381022ry1.jpg

The eastern end of The Grande has already been marked for extension with the CBD requiring for room for expansion.

I understand completely and I will not feel offended if Iam told about some typefaces. I only understood them as fonts until now but this is an educational Cj and Iam learning the history behind the typefaces. Lucidia is lovely. Even though they seem to have had some developmental issues earlier on it's a nice place. Would definitely love to live there.
