well since theres a london vs new york city and a  toronto vs new york city i decied to make one for chicago

Both are amazing citys with well devloped skylines

both have a population over 1,000,000 people

both citys have some of the best architecture you can  find in america and booth citys are the only citys in america to have buildings that have 100 floors or more and booth citys have some of the worlds tallst buildings

Gah, huge images.

Anyways, I'll put my vote with Chicago. Sure New York is bigger and perhaps more internationally well-known, but Chicago's skyline has always been more beautiful (and a lot simpler) than NYC's. Lake Shore Drive has fantastic views of Lake Michigan to the east as well as towering skyscrapers to the west. Navy Pier is great and always fun. The Shedd Aquarium and Adler Planetarium are some of the world's best. It's a city you can admire from down low and up high, and Chicago has so many faces to it. It's amazing that a city with such a violent history could become as magnificent as it is today.

I also like a good deep-dish pizza more than any New York style.

this is a tough one but i'm gonna go with Chi-Town. The reason: THE PEOPLE. I had a great time meeting new people when i was in chicago, they wre helpful, nice, and courteous. New York is so self absorbed it's almost rediculous. Maybe I didn't run into the right people in NYC but I fell in love with Chicago. Oh and the buildings aren't too bad either.

Going to have to disagree with you there. Pizza dripping with grease = epic win. Chunky deep-dish pizza = suckage.

Sure, Chicago style pizza is no doubt healthier than New York style pizza... but there is after all a general rule that the healthier something is, the worse it tastes- and this is no exception.

But that's a matter of a single food, not of cities.

I've actually never been to Chicago. I'd like to go someday, certainly. It does look impressive (though obviously not as impressive as New York).

Interestingly enough, back when I was in 7th grade, there was an idea put forward that perhaps my family would go to Chicago for a vacation in the summer. It never happened.... and I was the one that kiboshed it. Why? Well, my parents had this idea that we'd take a train there... which I absolutely refused to go with. I wanted to drive. I wanted to see roads I hadn't seen before. It seemed like an awful waste to just take a train and miss the sights along the way. Of course, driving would have taken two days. I was up for it and eager for it, but I'm unusual like that. Nobody else in my family was willing to be in a car that long. The train (Amtrak, probably) would have shortened it to one day.... because it continued running through the night and they turned out the lights so you could sleep. This is what really annoyed me about the idea. Sure, there are still things to see from a train (not roads, but still sights)... but not at night, and certainly not while you're asleep.

Needless to say, enthusiasm on the part of my sisters waned, too, and the idea was dropped. We ended up going back to Cape Cod instead (which, by the way, is a beautiful place).

One thing that really runs in Chicago's favor in my mind is the fact that they still have that el downtown. The last el within Manhattan's central business district was torn down in 1955. You can't ride past skyscrapers on a train in New York anymore. They all run underground within "the city" now.

I always find the complaints people make about els amusing. "they're loud" "they're ugly" "they block light from reaching the street". Cars and trucks going by on the street aren't loud?  Els can't be made prettier depending on how you design them?  And tall buildings don' t block light from reaching the street? Number one rule of life in America: no matter what you propose, someone will find an excuse to complain. And they will most likely win the argument, no matter how stupid their complaint is.

Anyway, this match is one I'm going to have to abstain from taking a definite side on. I want to say New York, but that'd be an obvious bias- It's where I'm from, I've never been to Chicago.... and Chicago does actually look like it could give New York a run for its money in terms of awesomeness, unlike certain other cities people have tried to compare to New York *cough*Toronto*cough*London*cough*.

Again, this Vs. thread is a NO CONTEST.

-New York is a Class A world city.

-Chicago is a Class B world city.

You cannot compare the two, they are just too different, even if they are in the same country.

-It would be better to compare New York to London or Tokyo, as those are the other 2 Class A cities.

-It would be better to compare Chicago with LA, Miami, Paris, Madrid, Toronto, Sydney, Mexico City, Dubai, Bombay, Singapore, Beijing, Frankfurt, Moscow, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Sao Paulo, etc. These are all class B cities.

Anyways, I think I made my point across.

    Best,

    -Haljackey

city vs city threads are dumb, NY is bigger by epic amounts and much more notorious.  NY will always own chicago in terms of epicness.

As someone who lives in chicago our best attributes are the amazing architecture, imo more varried and diverse than NY with more supertalls and the many distinct neighborhoods each with it's own identity, not to mention you can rent in a great neighborhood for under 1000$ a month easy 4.gif

Okay, list time. Crossed out means destroyed, italic means under construction.

    New York:

    1) Chrysler Building (1046 feet,1930)

    2) Empire State Building (1250 feet, 1931)

    3) One World Trade Center (1368 feet, 1973)

    4) Two World Trade Center (1362 feet, 1974)

    5) New York Times Tower (1046 feet, 2007)

    6) Bank of America Tower (1200 feet, 2008)

    7) Freedom Tower (1776 feet, 2011)

    8)World Trade Center Tower 3 (1255 feet, 2011)

    9) World Trade Center Tower 2 (1339 feet, 2012)

    Chicago:

    1) John Hanc.ock Center (1127 feet, 1969)

    2) Aon Center (1136 feet, 1973)

    3) Sears Tower (1451 feet, 1974)

    4) AT&T Corporate Center (1007 feet, 1989)

    5) Waterview Tower (1047 feet, 2009)

    6) Trump International Hotel and Tower (1362 feet, 2009)

    7) Chicago Spire (2000 feet, 2011)

In terms of number, it's even at the moment and appears destined to remain that way in the future. New York had its first supertall and the first supertall in the world) 39 years before Chicago did. Chicago does, on the other hand, have the taller tallest.. and still will in the future.

Crunching a few numbers, the average supertall heights are as follows (in feet):

    Year Chicago New York
    existing in 2000 1180.25 1256.5
    existing in 2008 1180.25 1135.5
    existing in 2012 1304.29 1273.14
    all time in 2008 1180.25 1212
    all time in 2012 1304.29 1293.56

So Chicago is, without a doubt, ahead in that department... though they didn't used to be.

Now then, let's look beyond supertalls to other skyscrapers, shall we?

Buildings at least 600 feet tall, 2008: 84 in New York, 36 in Chicago

Buildings at least 600 feet tall, 2012: 97 in New York, 47 in Chicago

Ouch. New York has more than twice as many of those!

Also, New York first broke the 600 foot mark in 1908 (albeit with a building that was demolished 40 years ago, the Singer Building) while Chicago didn't do it until 1930.

not to mention you can rent in a great neighborhood for under 1000$ a month easy 4.gifquote>

Yes, New York is expensive. That's because the real estate is more valuable!31.gif

Undoubtedly two of the greatest cities in North America and the world...

They are like cheesecake and pizza: both delicious but you really cannot compare the two. I do feel however that Chicago is the only US city that can even remotely be compared to NYC. NYC is a 1st tier Alpha city, Chicago is 2nd tier Alpha city...

Honestly, for cities like Chicago and New York, I don't care if it's a top Alpha or a bottom Alpha (don't really know the official names for these ranks, but hopefully you know what I mean) World City. Opinions of committees and conventions or whatever can't determine whether there is a contest or whether one city is undoubtedly the better city. Systematic comparison of that sort is good, but different qualities have different values to different people, and that's what this thread is for.

As far as buildings go, I'm more of a fan of Chicago's architecture. It's diverse, yet elegant.

Say what you like, but I definitely prefer deep-dish over New York style. There's something to deep-dish pizza that I love.

[prepare for a very in depth well educated analyses]

Chicago has one big advantage imo over New York. I feel for Cubs fans and what they suffer through, and on the other hand, i want to genocide yankees fans. But on the same hand, I chose eating a purple chicken nugget from mcdonalds over one of those disgusting uno's deep dish pizzas, and brooklyn pizza is great, so, yea, they are even 3.gif

For those of you who are nominating me for a noble peace prize after this, its Alfred, not Alferd.

You know, a lot of New Yorkers are Mets fans and a lot of Chicagoans are White Sox fans. No fair comparing the team which is known for its greatness with the team that's known for sucking.

...on that note, it's 100 years ago this October that the Cubs last won the World Series. 9.gif

But on the same hand, I chose eating a purple chicken nugget from mcdonalds over one of those disgusting uno's deep dish pizzas, and brooklyn pizza is great, so, yea, they are even 3.gifquote>

Purple? Since when are chicken McNuggets purple? 47.gif

I'm with you on the pizza thing, though I don't think you're quite being fair since Uno's is a chain, and pizza simply was not meant to be chained. Pizza Hut, Dominos, Papa John's... those places all suck. As does frozen pizza. It's just gotta come from your local pizzeria. Why? Because silly American corporations simply cannot make good pizza no matter how hard they try at it, due to a fundamental flaw with the concept: they're 1000% American.

Just as you'd be suspicious of Chinese food that isn't made by Chinese people or sushi that's not made by Japanese people, so should you be suspicious of pizza that isn't made by Italian people. Ethnic food is pretty much doomed to be mediocre at best if it's made by someone of the wrong ethnicity, since they lack the family tradition and the heritage that allows them to give it that personal touch. It's like having just a house instead of a home.

Indeed. Those moderators can be too aggressive sometimes... oh wait! 3.gif

Nah, I used to be less strict than now; however, in the past 4 months, people abusing the rule has gone through the roof so badly that it required tougher action.

Anyway, I love both cities. Although it may not be true, Chicago appears to be a very clean city with a nice lake view while NYC seems to be an empire unto itself which makes me like them equally. Though, Chicago is getting the tallest, so Chicago presents itself as a powerhouse too.

those were some great pictures, especially the bucktown, little village (I think), and Devon pics.

The uno's chain doesn't serve real chicago pizza for starters. You can't get real deep dish chicago pizza outside of chicago.

but real chicago pizza isn't that deep dish stuff anyway. That stuff is primarily for tourists, though I do occasionally indulge. Real chicago pizza is a thicker pizza than NY pizza, and smaller in circumfrence. It is cut in wedges, and is loaded with toppings. The cheese goes pretty much all the way to the edge of the slice.

If you're in Chicago, and want to try the real McCoy, my favorite is Pete's Pizza on Western, near Irving Park Road.

Anyway, I've been to both cities. I've had pizza in both cities, and hot dogs, and gyros, and Chicago is undoubtedly better. New York should take its sauer kraut and salad mix and ketchup covered pizza, go home, and try again.

Chicago is also a cleaner, more aesthetically pleasing city.

I am jealous of New Yorks far more extensive subway system though.

And for the guy who's never been to Chicago - El's really are noisy and ear splitting. Far, far, far more so than any other vehicle you'll encounter on the city streets. The only thing noiser is a fire truck siren.

That said, Chicago is uniquely identified these days with the elevated rails, so I'll deal with the noise and the other problems. Besides, subways can be so dank and musty and nasty.

Duke: They are all colors. I once had a friend who got a mcnugget with green inside it. As for your comment, your absolutely right. There is mexican food in the middle of the White Mountains (NH) but unfortuantly, it sucks because it lacks athenticity (if that is even a word). On the bright side, that is why Papa Ginos, a new england area pizza chain, is so good 3.gif made by a real italian using real a real traditional italian recipe.

Anyway, I think chicago vs. new york is a fair comparison.

Even though New York is the most notorious or famous depending on your opinion in the world, Chicago is a city that i find hard not to like, its gorgeous, full of skyscrapers, the waterfront looks almost tropical imo, the water is so pretty, and the overall atmosphere is fantastic. In a way, its like a more peaceful NYC. Although in the end, i have to with new york for well, being new york.

    question:where was this taken from?

I'd say considering the position of the Chicago skyline and the Gary mills district, I'd guess this was somewhere between the Indiana Dunes and Michigan City, Ind. areas.

i still dont see chicago being more  architecturally diverse then new york city sure they may have one super tall building (the sears tower) but new york has the empire state building whitch is only 200 feet shoter then the sears tower also nyc had the wtc as well so thats 3 super talls.

also chicago lacks alot of art deco buildings whitch new york city has alot also new york has a long timeline of buildings and theres a mix of alot of diffrent styles so thats why  see it being more architecturally diverse then chicago
