Talk about ridiculous, at least from our Western viewpoint.

57 Saudi Arabian men were arrested in a mall for flirting, playing pop music, and wearing improper clothing by the religious police.

Saturday's newspaper report did not say what kind of outfits the young men were wearing, but T-shirts emblazoned with drawings or English writing are often an invitation for harassment by the religious police. Islamic radicals also consider pop music a corrupting force.quote>

Your link is a good reminder of what the West is up against. I believe that it is indeed our freedoms they detest, and they would like nothing more than to impose this kind of thinking worldwide. Any policy arguments for terrorism are a front, and a disguise.

Well, there was the "vice squad", most of which have been renamed something like the "special victims unit".

But, yeah, you don't hear the phrase "moral turpitude" much these days.  Which is a bit surprising when you think about it.

It occurs to me there are two levels of policies here.   One, many of us don't follow those particular religious beliefs.  Two, many of us don't like the government telling us what do to (whether it follows a particular religious belief or not.)

this is just another case of those crazy radicals and there Dictatorial-phyconess.

i personally dont like how there are so many sluts and whores in pop music glorifying the objectification of women (pussycat dolls, britney spears, ect) but really i hate it because of the example it sets for the young girls wathcing this bullsh*t. i dont by any means agree with the solution saudi arabia is taking, but i dont like americas way of letting people do what the hell they want and have no morales and ruin our children either.

i personally thing a more middle ground should be taken, but i dont think that even if this pop culture smut was allowed in saudi arabia it would do much, most of the women have their genitals mutilated at birth to discourage them from sex before marraige, and when they do get married the still painfull wound is reopened for childbearing. women in saudi arabia are already seen as objects, so a little pop culture wont hurt them much more IMO.

its atrocities like these that make me wonder why people can write it off as OK because it their "culture" really all it is is barbarism.

Well, the article says that there's the risk of trial here if they can't prove that they weren't flirting.

Last I checked, flirting was usually a part of life. Seems interesting that they have a law against that, but I guess they do.

Hmmm isn't that sort of the way our society treats homosexuals, and the people who run our gas stations?  (usually indian, not arabian) Our freedoms exist only for certain people, we have our own restrictions against people we don't think deserve freedom.

I think there is only one case where a person does not deserve freedom, and that is when they commit a crime that is worth taking their freedom.

flirting is not, however some of the other stuff the people there do in the name of "religon" is.

i believe that everyone who comes to america deserves a chance for freedom, but if they misuse that chance, then they have proven themselves undeserving.

it does however suck that some people are treated as less than equals over here just for being a certain race or sexual preference, it just proves that while humanity's logic can be upright and moral, its baser instincts usually arent so.
