You're back! I though you died 3.gif Or at least abandonned this thread...I kinda made a new one because you weren't active in this one, so don't get mad at me. Mine almost survived the attack, it's probably 90% in tact, I'll go fix it, just don't get mad at me, I'm an impatient person 3.gif EDIT: So if you want, you can just let this thread die, or I can let mine die, mine's all fixed up now 4.gif

No offense, I would prefer if yours died. I think there is a delete post function, right?

When will this be a sticky? Or if that can't happen, will it ever be added to the omnibus? I remember one moderator said they would, but it's been months and it hasn't happened. Unless they've been busy or something.

^^ Seriously, how many times have we asked for a sticky on this thread? There are a good number of linux users who would greatly benefit from this. At least someone should come and say that it won't be a sticky.

Sad news...looks like it stopped working :'( I can't really test it right now, but I'm really pissed -.- http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=version&iId=10515 Hmm...looks like the final 1.0 release is better than the last few, but not as good as 0.9.60 was...I'll experiment with it ASAP (within a week probably). EDIT: Meh, the nice text editor doesn't work in Konqueror, and this site doesn't support BBcode (right?). Makes it a PITA to make your posts look good 3.gif

I'm having a couple of problems. I'm using Ubuntu 8.04 LTS and Wine 0.9.59. SimCity installed fine, but when I go to run it all I see is a black screen. I know the game is running, too, because I hear the EA GAMES and intro music, but I cant see anything. So here are my problems:

    1) Cant see anything.

    2) SC4 screwed up my duel screen configuration, and when I go to change it back to "big desktop' with the ATI Catalyst Control Center, and restart X, it goes back to clone screen.

    3) I can't figure out how to run SimCity 4 in Windowed mode (this might fix my other problems, or at least #2). I tried putting the -w at the end of the launcher, but it doesn't work

    4) This isn't really a problem, but I was in regedit, trying to manually do those entries to make sc4 go faster, but I don't have a HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Wine\Direct3D folder.

OK, so I got the game working. So, I pasted my SimCity 4 folder (from My Documents) over the SimCity 4 folder in my home directory. This backup is about 1.8 GB, and contains all my cities and plugins. When I try to run the game it freezes at this point. http://img80.imageshack.us/img80/7243/screenshotdefaultwinedesc0.png

Then the SimCity 4.exe process becomes a zombie.

Add the folder 4.gif Also, as of Wine 1.0 everything is working again 9.gif Except now you need a nocd crack...IMO it's worth it though because in 1.0 all those annoying graphics glitches with the tooltips and stuff are gone 4.gif

Ok, I updated wine, so now I have version 1.0. Instead of the game freezing, it now crashes at that spot. It appears I need a no cd crack, but I can't find one.

Please do not ask for No-CD patches. It's against the rules here.

I would recommend you try updating to the latest version of wine. Because of some hard drive problems I currently do not have a linux distro I can boot into. I imagine in a few days I can check it out.

I run Fedora 9 x86_64 and SimCity 4 needed a no-cd crack with wine-1.0-1.fc9.i386.rpm. I upgraded to F10's wine 1.1.2 via 'yum update --enablerepo=rawhide wine' and SimCity 4 worked without the cd crack.

For some bizarre reason the Timbuktu region doesn't have the Making Money Tutorial map. The land looks correct but it doesn't have a city or tutorial arrow. The other tutorials work as expected.

If the game freezes, it is a problem with your soundcard/sounddriver. Try to start the parameter -sound:off (or was it -audio:off?) This problem surely occurs if audio support hasn't set up well in the wine config.

I gave up with Wine. Instead I installed Windows XP in VirtualBox, and set it up so I can log into Windows XP directly from GDM (so no WM or DE is running at the same time). I have to run it with software rendering, but it's running very well.

I'm running Ubuntu 8.02 with Wine 1.0. SimCity, after the CD headaches, does run. There's the occasional flicker I have and stuff.

I have 2GB of DDR RAM, an AMD Athlon 64 (3200?) processor and many, many GB of hard drive space.

I think I've run into a plugin limit. I'm able to work right now with my plugin folder at about 324.8MB (this is apparently including documentation files too)

No matter what kind of file I add, whether it is a vehicle or a lot, the SimCity actually crashes on exit. (I am able to use the file in the game, but exiting is a whole other matter.)

Indeed, bizarrely, when I exit I actually have to go into my second desktop to get to the System Monitor so that I can kill the SimCity process. I don't know what the problem could be, really. This problem is definitely solved by reducing plugins, but it seems to not matter which plugins they are.

I cannot seem to find where the Datpacker is, on top of this. I don't know if it would help me, but it's worth a shot.

Anyone have any advice? I'd be very grateful. Else I just will have to suck it up and maybe find a way to kill SimCity when I'm ready to end my gaming session.

    -Seth

I used SC4D on Windoze until about a week ago, when my laptop's Motherboard decided to die on me (nice and inconvenient!). It's out of warranty, and I don't fancy faffing around waiting for HP to ship a return box, then waiting several weeks until HP get around to shipping it back (with a puny 3 month warranty).

Good news: I have a Linux box (ECS GeForce6100PM-M2 / Athlon 5000 X2 / 1GB RAM) running Mandriva 2009.0 & the packaged form of Wine 1.something) which I could potentially run SC4 on.

Bad news: My SC4D CDs are sitting in an attic 45 miles away. I've been running SC4 courtesy of a CD image.

Good news: I successfully installed it, courtesy of cd-emu.

Bad news: "Could not initialize DirectDraw". Click OK, and I get a nice black screen for a few seconds, after which Wine / SC4 promptly exit.

I've tried both gl modes in regedit to no avail - any ideas what I could try next?

I got simcity 4 to install and run and it looks great (no graphical errors I can see) but I do have 2 problems. One is I have no mouse cursor in the game! Kinda hard to play without one. Another problem is the game is running at like 1 frame every 3 seconds. Sure this box is low end but it should be plenty to run simcity.

    AMD Sempron LE-1150 (2ghz)

    2gb ram

    80gb hdd

    Nvidia geforce 8600 gt 256mb

    Fedora core 10 x86_64

    wine 1.1.7

simcity 4 deluxe (no patches yet, pristine install)

I'll tinker around with the video drivers as they may be my problem.

I got it working. I had to edit the 'Graphics Rules.sgr' and tell it B&W cursor. The game ran fine then and all I had to do to get speed was to set the game to software render (as fedora 10 has no nvidia drivers that work it seems).

Their are slight graphical errors and the mouse kinda skips around but nothing real bad. Next to install all the patches and import my plugins folder from windows.

I'm having a problem getting SC4 to install in Linux. When I type:

    wine AutoRun.exe

I get a message that says:

wine: could not load L"C:\\windows\\system32\\AutoRun.exe": Module not found

Am I missing something blatantly obvious?

Never mind, I got it working.  Apparently when the tutorial said "Copy the CD to the desktop" I interpreted that to mean copy the ISO, rather than the file.

It's working now, except for sound.  But I'm not terribly surprised, given that I've been battling this computer since installing Ubuntu to make it work.  Any suggestions?  I'll see what I can do in the mean time.

Found one new thing to make SC4 work faster on Deb or RedHut. Cedega Hq said that SC4 should be run under Win2k (WinME\Win 2000), and disable (in wine) Interprocess Communications, to be able to load more than 100 files)))) DatGen works on Cedega, but the problem is that it can work only with certain number of files wich weight less than 100MB if more it will just say: "Out of memory"

Still having some problems with PEGprod, DATgen just don't want to make a single .dat and SC4 don't want to work properly(sm like flat region no any text and bla-bla(= )

    Par:

    Video - Geforce GTX 260 896MB

    MoBo, Proc and stufff - Gigabyte, Intel Core i7 940 2.93GHz 4.8GT/s 8Mb, Barracuda 1tb 120000rpm

    Memory - 4GB

OS and Windows Maker - Ubuntu 7.10 & Wine 1.0

OS and Windows Maker - Mandriva 2008Spring & Cedega 7.10.9 (with engine 11.0)

I have had the no-text bug. I do have the ACB airport packs, but removing it made no difference. Though in my case, I had combined all of its files into one file; I do not DatPack my entire plugin folder. I traced my instance of the problem to the BLaM-Steel Mill Pack folders. Yes, the number of files slow down loading times, but it wouldn't be the source of this bug. In both folders, there are 51 items; in my BSCProps folder, there are 46 files, and it does not seem to affect the bug. Though I did notice a file that started with a hyphen "-"; I don't know if that could be the source of the bug, nor do I remember if the ACB folder contained a file with a hyphen either.

I went into Windows in order to merge dats and files, including the BLaM Steel Mill folders, and also removed unneeded plugins. Back in Linux, the bug was gone. So I tested situations with the merged.dat and with the original BLaM files. With the merged.dat, text was fine. However, with the BLaM Steel Mill files in one folder (originally in the two folders), then testing with and without the hyphen file, there was text, but it seemed un-bolded or in another font. Also, I had to kill the SimCity process to quit. I didn't want to try testing the other 50 possible files.

Merging dats are a potential solution to the no-text bug. Another similarity between the ACB and BLaM folder was that these files were spread among subfolders, but it's the order that plugins are loaded that is the source of many plugin-related problems. Merging dats and attentive placement of files eliminates this issue.

In Nautilus, files show up in alpha-order, regardless of case. But I've noticed in other programs such as Music Player Daemon, it gives higher precedence to upper case, in alpha order, then to lower case. I'm wondering if Wine has this behavior too, and if it could potentially be related to other SimCity-on-Linux bugs.
