Man, 0.9.55 doesn't do any better than 0.9.54, but nothing's broken and it still works great so I'm still happy 4.gif

Even though I am a Windows user I found the instructions very informative. I too think this needs to be pinned.

Tv-vcr should PM a mod to get it pinned 4.gif

PS: How does this help installing on Windows? Just wondering 3.gif

Yay, Wine 0.9.56 is finally on the Ubuntu wine repository. I'll go test out SimCity later and see if it works any better 9.gif

It works good in Wine 0.9.56, but not any better. Oh well, BUMP! Needs to be pinned 9.gif

I don't know if that bumping helps anything. If people have problems with their game in linux, they are probably wise enough to do the search for relevant threads. I have to say that I got rid of the addiction to SC4 - for now. I have no time for playing intensively :(

But I have to say that I was suprised how well SC4 worked on Ubuntu. Thanks for help you all! ( o_O)_b

IonWind: I am a moderator on a high level forums elsewhere, that I'll leave nameless. You'd be surprised at how unused the "Search" button is. Most folks don't want to search for a fix, they'd rather have it just told to them.

northsider1983: Yes, Ubuntu and Gnome are pretty much flawless w/SimCity4DE, in my exp, but I use Linux Mint(Ubuntu derivative) running KDE and I have a few graphic problems that are either Wine or the simple fact that SimCity is a Windows program. I know it is not my video card or system cause it runs in WindowsXP and runs Linux based games(Wolfenstien: Enemy Territory) just fine.

A few things to try. If you are running compiz/beryl or any type of intensive 3D, take it off. My system can run those just fine, but after an hr of game play, SimCity starts to glitch and run slower. Also take of any special themes, I have noticed this to have adverse effects(such as no mouse cursor)

One last thing: SimCity itself. It does not operate in the same way Windows does obviously, but run it as software and if you don't need clouds, wave or even the translucent UI, uncheck those as well.

I probably should have mentioned that I have my main system back now. I posted specs earlier in this thread that reflected a borrowed PC until I had mine back. Long story...

I now have my:

P4 2.4Ghz Prescott(YES, it is bloody hot! 50 at idle IN BIOS!!)

1.5GB RAM

nVidia 7300GT HiDef 512MB

This looks like there may be a problem with the WINE installation itself. However, before you go reinstalling WINE. run the "winecfg" again and make sure it is selected as a Windows XP emulation...should be the first screen that pops up after running winecfg. I am not sure what else to try other then removing and reinstalling WINE, cause this dump is spouting out a lot of Windows based errors.

Thanks for the help...but I will be re-installing XP over the weekend. I need some apps to WORK that I need, like ArcGIS, AutoCAD, etc... also this will give me a chance to play simcity for real. Too bad I couldn't get it working.

Joe887: I was able to run other Windows apps and games in Wine. Not perfectly, but well enough. Photoshop CS2 was the annoying one.

So, anyone D/L .58 of WINE? I dont want to D/L it cause I am working fine already

0.9.58 Works great for me. No noticable improvment for SImCity 4 but it still works just as well.

Thanks for this tutorial.

I tried wining a few months back, but couldn get it to install.

But thanks to this tutorial I could.

And it works wonerfully. I think it's even faster than on Windows, or is that just me?

Oh, and if you've Compiz Fusion with the rotation cube, start a game and then rotate the cube, as you'll see the game continuess, and you see the sims and cars, etc just moving along your cube. Very cool!

OH, it is faster, i have noticed write times to the HDD are much faster. Saving and loading the city itself are where i notice the speed increase. However, i need to loose this Intel proc and get and equivalent or better AMD. The heat from these latter gen P4s are super hot and slowing it down after an hour or so of game play. 50 to 51 Celsius at idle in BIOS. if any of you know of a good app i can install to check the temp while running the game i'd like to test that as well.

Not sure if it will work, but look at my thread that I just posted. I made a new one because tv-vcr doesn't keep this one updated 3.gif

Buggery bugger! My post was not spared from the attack!

Don't worry, I'm working on fixing it. In the mean time, mods, will this ever get stickied?
