Whoops... Had a run of no SC4 again, but I'm back and I'm making a habbit of downloading as much of Goobers and BSC's stuff as I can to make my cities look more... ya. Can't find a word for that one. Anyway!

I've been working on a region that is HUGE. Thus I'm building sattelite cities that will eventually be connected sometime in a few decades. The one I'm most dedicated to right now is Grandville, name inspired by Granville in Vancouver. The architecture style is much different from the Industrial early 1900's however. Anyway.

Sorry for the lack of creative writing, getting pretty lazy.. I will follow up shortly with an updated overhead pic and planned region layout.

Hahaha, I like the brown box picture!

I agree with Schulmanator about urban sprawl, growing continuously outwards just isn't an efficient use of the land. There is a need for wide open spaces within a region but many cities in real life are suffering because people are living further and further away from their jobs, and this in turn contributes to massive stress on the transport network and sky-rocketing development and maintainance cost for basic services like electricity, water etc. So continue to encourage your already centralised residential and commercial centres to grow upwards!

Very good update, the area has a certain feeling, I like it. The last pic reminds me very much of the el- rails running through NYC back then. Looking forward to more,

RJN: Thanks! Looks realistic doesn't it? 9.gif

    20Twenty: Thanks 4.gif

etherian: That makes sense, and thanks for the outside analysis. Suburban sprawl is something I think looks really good in SC4 but I'll keep it under control.

lucky7: Thanks for dropping by, and thats the exact same impression I got from those pictures too. I'll check out your CJ when I get a chance.

    Region picture:

    ParadiseBeachedit-1208746935.jpg

Sorry if that looks a little blurry, but everything outside of Grandville for now is planned for some local suburban sprawl, and I'll have the G-10 running along the whole outside of the peninsula, and expand the el-line as well. The region also has a bus system, and when the budget can handle it, I may add a subway line spreading out from Grandville, so stay tuned.

I'm trying to improve my city building, and what are some tips on making a particularly CJ or showcase-worthy city? exactly how do you guys build your cities?

EDIT: One thing that would help would be some good BATs. I'm looking for something Vancouver ish in architecture, and alot of the stuff I find on the STEX is American influenced. Anybody know where I could find something here? Maybe Pacific Canada influenced at least?

Well, I am a fan of re-creating cities..! I lay out the roads and everything first, then I go for the zones. As I have a lot of one-ways I primarily zone for commercial on the main roads (valid for suburbs and medium- developed tiles). Oh, yes and parks. Just watch any bigger city in GE and see how specific areas are developed, that helps a lot (or try live.local). But as I said, that's valid for real cities, so hope I could help!! Anyways, cool region-view, I guess there's plenty room to fill 2.gif and looking forward to more,

From the last update, I guess I would suggest some more streets for your new suburb? Especially for low to medium density residential areas, it doesn't have to conform to the grid that you have now (not saying its bad, but it may look more pleasing to the eye) But having a suburb surrounded by arterial roads is the right idea.

Perhaps also have a theme for your cities, what sort of people live there? What are their main source of income? How do they get around the place? Rather then putting everything thats available onto your city, choose specific ones and make combinations to build a more structured and "convincing" city.

    That is my 2

lucky7: Thanks for the tips, I never thought of using GE, I'm going to start doing that and take some notes.

etherian: Thanks alot! I'm working on miles and miles of suburbs right now and they're starting to turn out verrry well but traffic remains somewhat a problem at this early time. Once I've expanded past the downtown completely, I'll start making the streets more diagonal perhaps, or conforming to the terrain or whatnot.

    Grandville-Mar15661209184803.jpg

So as you can see, I really like where the burbs and outskirts are going. Here are a couple from the growing downtown.

Man, that Coca-Cola company seems to be EVERYWHERE! They've set up in so many cities, they must be doing really well. I should buy Coke stock.

Anyways, I like your stuff. I like the wild coastline (I prefer that look myself). A suggestion for your elevated rail: over at SC4Devotion (I think) they have these stores you can put underneath the rails to provide some CS$ jobs. With the style of buildings you have in your city I think they would fit in nicely. Just a thought!9.gif

nottheboss: Thanks for the drop by comment!

NMUSpidey: Thanks, yeah it just works with what I do (I dont like lining the coast with nothing but beach, for one thing it's really hard to do with or without the beach kit) And Thanks for that! Do you remember what they're called?

Kiwi n Grapes: Thank you, and you needn't wait much longer...

    anarchy0029: Thanks 9.gif

Thanks all again for the replies, I haven't started the mosaic yet... Plus I have to find a good spot to do a mosaic of. I did however expand the city southward and create some industrial port space and frieght hub. I have some pictures, but photobucket is down right now so those will be out soon.
