I for one wouldn't mind a little division into categories. The problem is, where to stop. Realism/scifi/fantasy, or by posts/age (age of the cj, not the poster) like SC4D does might be just the ticket if the total number of categories is kept to a manageable size.

More ideas?...

Keeping Trixie winners with the rest of us commoners is highly recommended IMHO. It will benefit everyone. Sometimes it's a challenge keeping a cj in the first 2 pages, as very few people dig any deeper.

Possibly a randomly chosen 'Featured' on a daily basis, or 3-5 as weekly selections.

A thread devoted exclusively to teasers and drumming up pageviews, as another space to toot one's own horn? Open to all CJers, just an advertising space. This thread in particular would likely then show up on unrelated Google searches from time to time and bring in more new members.

Let no one yield, we're on the field where deeds eclipse the sun; where the brave are told on a thread of gold, the tapestry is spun. As they speak of dreams, their armor gleams, this calm before the storm... Where all can see their destiny, the bishop takes the pawn.

haljackey:  Thanks for you input and ideas.  You are right, there are pros and cons and there are problems associated with moving established CJs to a new thread... a quick example is all the signature linkys that people have would suddenly become useless...  ST does indeed have a particular style and just because other sites may do things a little differently is not necessarily a bad thing.  It creates a point of difference.

As for people posting non SC4 CJs...  well we have had one or two SCS CJs started and personally I think they are fine here in this forum.  Obviously if there was a sudden influx and it started to cause a major conflict for space a separate SCS forum may well be considered at that point.

Oh BTW someone PMed me today to ask if they could post a SC3000 CJ....  (at the risk of my being pelted with tomatos) ... I said that it would be ok...  again I would hardly expect a sudden influx of SC3000 CJs...  we will see.  *ducks for cover*

The current format will be staying for the moment, however it is important to remember that many good CJs will be found on page two and three... they are but an extra click away!

Which brings us to the next topic of housekeeping...

Bumping CJs, by replying after each comment.

We are making a small change to the Guidelines / Rules for Creating a City Journal sticky.

Do not get impatient for replies. If you update at 2 in the morning, don't expect 20 replies in two minutes. Give people time.

About 6 hours is appreciated in bumping your own thread if you are the last to post.

    Making replies
to your commenters is polite and welcomed, however please do not reply after each comment - this is considered to be 'bumping' and can be annoying to other CJers.  It can be a turn-off to potential readers.  Remember that there are many CJs and they all deserve to have their chance on page one.   Waiting for at least 3-4 comments before replying, would be appreciated and is considered good ettiquite and courteous.

Nice addition, I haven't noticed that too much as a problem but it's nice to have the guidelines set out anyway. Thanks again to all the cj mods (not sure if it was just abcvs3.gif) for updating Chocomax's stickies.

Ok, now im not a newbie of this site but im kinda new... Anyways ill get the the point. Im a nut for big cities and reigon-wide projects but I am unsure about posting a CJ on here. The reason for that is I think im one of the only people on here that doesnt have the Rush-Hour EP. I might have it soon but I really want to put my CJ on here. Ive seen how hard people can be on CJ makers by saying they need more custom content but since i dont have RH, I cant get it. Well I just need some help for my situation, is there some sort of No Rush hour CJ forum..lol.

    Thanks, Simplopolis

There is no rule that says you have to have RH to post a CJ. Indeed there is no rule that you must have custom content... vanilla maxis can work, and a non-RH CJ would indeed have a "point of difference".

New people are also welcome to post a CJ if they wish, please just read the stickied guideline threads before you start.

I've always liked the sound of a 'Featured CJ', maybe something that can happen weekly or monthly. What do the moderators think about this? 3.gif

What in the world is a CJ??? I'm probably supposed to know, as I have read this whole thread and can't find a definition anywhere.

Yep same here... for the first month I wondered what the heck people meant by putting "Visit my CJ" in their signatures...

Then I discovered it... The Forum of Forums... The jewel in the crown of ST... The pinnacle of playing prowess... the forum that smelled faintly of cat pee... well when Schulmania is on page one anyway... where was I... oh... The grand culmination of custom content mixed with a dash of maxis... (well a bit more of a dash in my case.. cough)...

Many cities! One Community! One Dirk to rule them all!

(OK should I stop now... quit while I am ahead? ... or carry on and embarrass myself further...)

Great job with this thread, Craig. It really seems to be a need around here.

As for a division of the CJ section, this has been discussed a couple of times in the past and I'm against it. I don't find the CJs disorganized either. On the contrary, I like it to go through the pages and search for updates in different CJs. A subdivision based on replies, views, etc. would make that quite impossible because you only get the "popular" ones at once and you have to check through different forums. And it makes it even worse when you search for a particular one...

A thematic organization might work better, but that could be achieved by better search filters rather than multiple forums. So that authors could add keywords to their threads like "Sci-Fi", "realistic", "SimCity Societies" etc. which allows readers to search exactly for the CJs they're looking for. That would leave it to the readers to decide whether they want to see all CJs or just the ones they're interested in.

i spy with my little eye a spam comment amongst this thread 3.gif

anyway, thanks for this new rule craig, those CJers that do that really bug me, and they never listen when I tell them to stop!

Tagging CJs is a great idea, IMHO. For the sake of simplicity the mods could limit it to a handful of broad tags, and it would keep the threads in one category as they are now.

    hahahaha lmfao.

Thanks craig. Im just trying to help my collegues have a successful Swap Day. These personal awards are nice, but it doesn't mean anything if Swap Day is not a success. I would like to thank my co-winner, ilikehotdogsalot, for his help and support. When you are training, it always helps to have someone encouraging you and helping you out.

haha...beleive it or not, i was able to keep a straight face for that acceptance speech.

since you seem to be new to waterfronts, I would try that tutorial and working on a fairly straight edged coastline. I usually like to have 5-10 tiles after the coast flat, it  doesn't usually work when you have a hilly water front.

Also, you make want to plop all your waterfront peices so you can see what looks good and what you like.

A question about landfills copied here because it might help others.  If anyone has any other ways of getting rid of landfills then do please share it here.

Ah landfills... the Maxis programmers little joke on SC players...

Land fills can not be "destroyed"...  I mean I have tried meteors, fire, volcanos, and terraforming the crapola out of them.... but basically you are stuck with them...

    ...but!   There is hope!

The only way I have found to get rid of them is to build waste to energy plants - NOBs seems to work well, (better than the Maxis ones) and send as much garbage to your neighbour if you can and slowly, with patience the landfill will empty.  As soon as you see a empty square you dezone it.  The last four squares seem to take for ever but eventually with patience the garbage will disappear.

I am not convinced that cutting off road access helps... some people say it does, but I like to think that the trucks are collecting the gargage from the landfill and taking it to the waste to energy plant or to the neighbour...

NOBs stuff seems to be pretty clean and environmental...  the water treatment plants sort out pollution pretty well and provide plenty of  water in return which is also useful to sell to the neighbours.

Or you could avoid landfills all together, and download the Super Ordiance Mod.

Im pretty sure one of the ordainces keeps your city super clean. Its good for a CJ because empty landfill areas crap up your pics.

photoshop or some other kind of photoshopping program.

Just make a new image, you want the width to be around 4x bigger than the length, then add your background, wether its a color, gradient, or a internet picture. Next add any text you want over that, and your done.

A good free program for that is photofiltre.
