Discussing the issues but not each other?

Makes sense for politics, but the voter usually brings up the issue of how the candidate talks about the other side by saying, for example, "Ah man, did you hear what such and such candidate said about the other such and such candidate? It was so snide." Well then, it starts from there and then the discussion turns away from the issues and the political bickering continues and then the notion of change seems to die out. Hmm...

I know this will sound biased and one-sided, but I pearsonally do not trust the Repulbican Party, as they are composed of CEOs and lobbyists, only working for themselves. Has anyone thought why it is that these people support less gov't and more free market control? Its because they want to increase their profit margin. They do not want to have the government impose saftey, environmental, or labor regulations, because this would mean that they would have to *GASP* spend money doing these things! Why is it that our meat processing regulations have not been updated since Upton Sinclare wrote "The Jungle", that the average car is actually less efficient than it was 20 years ago, that several members of congress have repeatedly tried to dissolve OSHA, that there are only five (count 'em, five) corporations that control ALL the television media in the US? Capitalism NEEDS government oversight to make it work, do we want a monopoly on what comes through our TVs, on who makes the drugs we take and who provides our healthcare, on who writes the software our computers use, on who provides our phone and internet services? NO, we don't. Why, because isn't that what's refered to as a dictatorship when someone tells us what we can and cannot do? Isn't that why we have the Bill of Rights, to prevent this from happening? People need to realize that the government isn't the only one who can become "Big Brother". People need to do something that, apparently, isn't possible in America anymore, stand up for what they think is right.

Day 4:

McCain took center stage and accepted his party's nomination. Balloons fell and us St. Paulites are playing the Minnesota Nice card while we patiently wait for them to pack up and get out of town. There is a lot of discussion whether this Convention was worth it. Many businesses didn't see an increase in patronage as they had been promised. The lost productivity in downtown, traffic issues, and the obvious security concerns have made a lot of people question the authenticity of economic claims that were promised.

Final Day for the Battle for St. Paul.

1500 protesters gathered on the grounds of the Capitol and exceeded their legal protest time. After which they left and tried crossing the John Ireland bridge and were met with stiff police presence. This shut downtown down as McCain was taking center stage. 200 were detained and 70 other people were arrested around downtown. There are dozens of explosions and loads of tear gas. We were even interrupted by the helicopters circling my neighborhood. Clashes are still going on and Downtown was pretty much shut down again. My roommate was trying to get to class today which takes less than 5 mins (told you I live really close to downtown) and it took her 25 mins cause she wasn't allowed to use most of the streets. Tonight should be another messy one...

Its likely that arrests will total more than 600 by the time this convention is over.

OK greekman, but you said the Republicans would step down if they didn't have support. George Bush's approval rating is the lowest this century. His disapproval rate is over 60%. He continues to push a war that the majority of Americans oppose. He and Ceney continue to stay on the same course. We have had eight years of one of the most corrupt administrations in American history. McCain says he would continue most of Bush's policies. Seems pretty radical to me.

He had 3 tax cut programs (not the tax rebates). They total to 1.35 trillion dollars and those who made more than 150k had HUGE tax cuts. Your father would not have gotten it this year. These laws were enacted in 2001, 2002, and 2003. All of these would have been apparent in April of 2004.

IIRC it used to be that the highest tax bracket had to pay 50% of their paycheck until George Bush enacted tax cuts, which cut the tax rate to 30%.

IMO, someone has to grow a pair and stand up against this dumb idea that in order to have the best military, we need lots of funding for it, why not cut the check for healthcare or any other underfunded program from the Military budget? It's not like we're going to be fighting a war with the USSR anymore, and even if we do get into a confrontation, I say screw the war rules, and nuke the enemy. 500 billion dollars is a lot of dollars, how much would the health care cost for the 65 million that are uninsured.

I'm just starting to wake up from my summer hibernation with the Real Life Bureau of Bureaucracy (we bureaucrats are just the opposite of polar bears in that sense! 9.gif )... So tell me, has the Party Party held its convention yet??

Never thought I'd be quoting Rolling Stone in this thread.  It seems that there is a problem finding a song that fits and a songwriter willing to be quoted.

From Heart Lash Out at McCain Campaign's Use of "Barracuda"

“Sarah Palin’s views and values in NO WAY represent us as American women. We ask that our song ‘Barracuda’ no longer be used to promote her image. The song ‘Barracuda’ was written in the late ’70s as a scathing rant against the soulless, corporate nature of the music business, particularly for women. (The ‘barracuda’ represented the business.) While Heart did not and would not authorize the use of their song at the RNC, there’s irony in Republican strategists’ choice to make use of it there.” quote>

From Jackson Browne Sues John McCain Over Campaign Commercial

What bothers Browne almost as much as McCain’s lack of permission, the lawsuit alleges, is that using “Running On Empty” suggests that Browne supports McCain’s presidential campaign and the Republican platform. “In light of Jackson Browne’s lifelong commitment to Democratic ideals and political candidates, the misappropriation of Jackson Browne’s endorsement is entirely reprehensible, and I have no doubt that a jury will agree,” Browne’s lawyer Lawrence Iser said.quote>

From Mellencamp Asks McCain to Stop Using Tunes

Not to mention that the far-right types whose votes McCain is seeking won’t love the mildly progressive lyrics to “Our Country,” which call on the government to “help the poor and common man” and suggest that “there’s room enough here for science to live/ And there’s room enough here for religion to forgive.” And does McCain really want to associate himself with those “Pink Houses” lines about the “simple man” paying for the “the thrills, the bills and the pills that kill”?quote>

I can see how one might stumble onto this problem once but three times?  Shouldn't there be someone doing their homework here?

I realize that most people here might not be familiar with these groups (aside from playing Barracuda on Guitar Hero) but, as a Boomer, I've listened to their music for decades.  If you had asked me back then if their music would be used for a Republican campaign, I would have doubted it.  But then, it isn't really working, is it?

(On a different note:  I believe I've found a method to make the links work:  create the link as usual, then edit it and fix it.   stupid firefox "upgrade".)

Its over!!!!

Republicans get out! Media get out! National Guard, Air marshalls, SS, FBI, get out! I want my streets back and I'm sick of hearing sirens. My poor dog keeps howling with them and its only cute for so long. I can't wait to NOT hear flashbangs. Last night had over 400 arrests...

This puts our total for the 4 days at over 800 arrests.

I can't wait til the near 100,000 people leave town. The general consensus is that people love Minneapolis-St. Paul but the protests did mar this convention and did lessen the economic impact for businesses downtown. There were loads of lost productivity when State employees (remember, we do have our own government to run here in the Capitol) and many downtown businesses were told to basically "evacuate" around 2 PM yesterday. It was nice getting attention, but living in a state of constant interruption was NOT cool...

Outside the bar....

4-Day Total: 818

I don't know, I was giving McCain a second chance and he blew it, I'm starting to hate him again. He aired a commercial saying the exact opposite of what is true-he says "Obama is friends with old out of touch white men and wants to choke the middle class with taxes while I appeal to the young krowd', yo'!" Hmm, what were they smoking this time? Plus all this "my friends..." I'M NOT YOUR FREAKING FRIEND!!! 32.gif

First off, Reagan drove this country into the [Edited for language-91] that was the 80s.

Secondly, did you not read what I wrote?

She wanted a police officer fired because he divorced her sister.

She went against the $250 million "bridge to nowhere" so she could earn the political points of reforming wasteful spending, yet re-authorized the funds to be spent on areas of the government and state that were loyal to her.

She gave her daughter the choice of keeping her child, when, by her own philosophy and agenda for government, her daughter should have been forced to keep it, no matter what.

She is corrupt.

yea i remember back then dad complainin about how half of his paycheck went into taxes, oddly enough we took huge vacations, and spent alot of money durning those years from 01-04, and thats also when the housing boom was as well.

As for our military, thats what the draft is for. Hell we can have a 4million man army in 90 days if we needed to.

I didn't listen to it, but it was hard to avoid catching snippets of it here in MSP, as quotes were all over the Opinion Exchange section of the Star Tribune. However, as for Obama not having any executive experience, I point you to Abraham Lincoln, who had no executive experience to speak of and only 2 years of national political experience. Obama has held the seat since January 1st, 2005, which means he would have held the seat for four years if elected President, twice as long as Abraham Lincoln.

Well obviously it's easy to keep a down syndrome baby and your teen daughter's pregnancy if you are the Governor of Alaska....Most people probably would be under a different set of circumstances in that situation.

Anyways, as the time nears I am only feeling more cynical about politics. I guess though I am usually liberal I can also be more a moderate as well. Neither Candidate impress me much and I don't even watch the news much because both of their speeches make me roll my eyes.

oh well, another lesser of two evils vote to the democrats from me...

exactly hamsterTK, I'm pretty sure it doesn't require as much work as running California or Arkansas. She's been mayor of a town of 5000 sims. We'd all be as qualified as her, heck, some of our cities have more sims than her state.

An interlocking is a system that's used to change switches on railroad tracks. Nowadays they're computerized, in the old days they were mechanical, but the idea is that it prevents you from flipping a switch that would send a train onto an occupied track (to prevent crashes).

An interlocking limit would simply be the edge of the area controlled by the interlocking.

More than you could possibly want to know about interlockings is here.
