This is my city: Cagliari

Cagliari (pron "kàliari") is an ancient Phoenician city, once known as "Karalis", and it is older than Rome itself.

Now, it is the regional capital of Sardinia Island, in the Mediterranean sea, it is a medium-size (and medium density too) city, comfortable since it is not affected by the problems that usually congest big metropolises. In the past, it has been a very important and precious harbor due to its location and, as consequence, conquered almost by every west-European empire: Cartaginians, Romans, Spanish, Arabs, and many others.

Due for this reason, the people living in Cagliari is a mix of different cultures and ethnic groups, showing the signs of this merging into several life aspects: from language to food, from music to folklore.

Here are some snapshot of my smaller version of Cagliari, made with SC4 ^_^

First of all, this is my island: Sardegna. Cagliri is in the South, in the big gulf, while in the North there is the famous Emerald Coast.

And here we go with some details from my city:

2930190514_b1370b23bf.jpg?v=0

This is a panoramic view of my city. I'm sure that, if some other person from Cagliari should ever come here, he or she could recognize some historic place, like the hills, our marina, or the military fuel store.

2929323141_ef8e97111c.jpg?v=0

Well, here is more or less where I do live. My house is among those condos very close to the military army base and the roundabout that leads to intra-city highway on the right, at the bottom of the hill along the way with the hospital. I think that I'm very luck because, as you can see, I live near a very beautiful park, that is on a famous (for us) hill, named Mont'Urpinu, that hosts even a little churc, and nothing is missing: schools, bus stops, commercial centers... 4.gif

2929324721_01484bd726.jpg?v=0

Here we are in Repubblica plaza, that is a very special place for me since it is one of the 2 city "cores" In the north, you can see our courthouse, with "questura" (sort of police office) nearby, then the urban rail station with parking and then, south, the true plaza Repubblica that is crossed by Dante Alighieri street, with commercial centers near and, going up the hill, my mid-school Michelangelo (now Martini) and, even south, the true Carabinieri (local military police) base.

2929326281_5cb74d0558.jpg?v=0

This one is part of the historycal center, know as "casteddu" (castle) with our cathedral. Sadly, the map was too small to store all those little and narrow streets, but I'm satisfied because there are many little houses like in the truce city and you can see both Buoncamino (nice walking) with the prison and offices in front of it, St. Lucifer church and our city walls, called Walls of St.Remì (bastione di San Remì2.gif

2930186540_a21063c7b9.jpg?v=0

Going down to the hill, we can find the university area, with piazza d'Armi (weapons), engineering university, human sciences and licterature univerisity and one of the biggest libraries in the city. At the bottom there is supposed to be law university and the roman anphytheatre that is not really the Rome colosseum but it was the closest thing for it 4.gif On the NW you can see Monteclaro park and Pacinotti school. here is a detail.

2929327027_b77495db3d.jpg?v=0

But the true core of the city is the harbour and Rome street!

2929328527_ebed4b3a9c.jpg?v=0

2930188784_c3b1e211da.jpg?v=0

Same photo taken by night and at sun fall. For sure, this is among the most detailed part of my reproduction: from  SW, you can see our canal-harbour, and our bus station with Mc.Donalds, that makes a corner around Matteoitti plaza with the trainstation and the industrial docks. Then there is "capitaneria di porto" (harbour police) and the docks for tourists. North from the station there is Carmine plaza, that is dedicated to the Holy Virgin. Goin up the hill, instead, it is possible to see Jenne plaza, with the statue of Happy Charles (that in true city is pointing in the wrong direction! Lol! 4.gif and, again St.Remi. On the very right, there is the Icnusa military dock, RAI sport fields, ENEL towers (the adzure ones). Then it should connect to Via Dante again, where there is the cemetry, but it was not possible to get everything together.

2930189930_261d516383.jpg?v=0

This one, instead, is another city corner that is very close to where I live. Here you can see our highway that connects my quarter with Generuxi quarter and "cuts" through the city and leads to the hospital area and the outsider higway that surroundes the city as a ring. You can note some of the remaining industrial buildings that are not used both in the game and in the city, the sea channel where sometimes I go to make jogging and that hosts a little energy plant and, over it, our huge cinema center, Warner Village + "le vele" (wings) commercial center in Quartu St.Elena (a nearby city merged with Cagliari).

In the center, there are our swams with "is arenas" water treatment plant and in the middle, the old salt extraction plant, now turned into an abandoned museum. In the south of the map, our luna-park, with "cavalluccio marino" sport club, parkings and junk food and the n the residential area, with a little and lovely church, just in front of the seashore.

2930182786_2f4085d5ba.jpg?v=0

This one, instead is a sort of "concentrated" piece of city, since it holds part of St.Elia quarter (a quite bad area, made as getto for poor people after II world war) but you can still see Bonaria's church, my second high school Alberti, via Dante with the cemetery and sport fields and St.Elia stadium, very close to a hill called Devil' Saddle.

2930181276_f0d8e71734.jpg?v=0

This one, instead, isa nother not-safe part of the city, but that hosts the Brotzu general hospital and has the beautiful st.Michael (san Michele) castle, that now is a museum.

2930180804_8fedc4fc8f.jpg?v=0

But Cagliari is not only history, but even hi-tech, and in fact, behind the pope Giovanni XXIII plaza, there is the T-hotel (tallest building with antenna), that is a true one-piece in architecture. Not far away, there is even our liric theatre.

2930184178_b4a0f3523f.jpg?v=0

But a true coastal city would be not a good one if without a marina! here is a night view of Poetto beach, with Marina Piccola (means little), Calamosca lighthouse and D'Aquila and Lido summer hotels! Not to name, of course, our luna-park: the Bin Ben.

2930187980_cbb56cabf3.jpg?v=0

And here is the (chough!) pride of sardinian industry: SARAS! It is the 3rd biggest oil refinery in Europe, that grants work to more than 1.000 people and... stinks quite a lot. In fact, in the nearby village called Sarroch, people are often more ill by cancter than in the rest of the island, regardless of all the trees and parks that it is possible to find inside. Very nice to see the oil takn coming for refueling!

2929321077_4ef2358e5d.jpg?v=0

But near Cagliar it is even possible to find little villages and rural areas. Here you can see Sarroch on the left and Capoterra in the middle, a nice area surrounded both by green, swamps, farms and CASIC industrial area, famous for wind power plants.

2929320021_bd49ea89f9.jpg?v=0

Last but not least, Villacidro. Another lovely rural village where people live in little houses, very often with kitchen garden on the backdoor... as you can see from this photo. Famous for lemons, oranges and... heavy industry not too far away. Contracditions in italy! 4.gif

You know, even of course it is still a game and everything is far from being perfect, the thing that I like very much is that I have been able to give "the taste" of the lifestyle in my region, preserving many low-height condons and preventing the gorwing of those high towers that makes so much "american" and so few "european".

Have a nice day and thank you for travelling with orion virtual airlines: we hope to meet you abroad again! 4.gif

Yes, way more custom content. You can never have enough of it. Great job so far on the layout of the city.

I've discovered the error: it says " The maximum attachment directory size has been reached, no further attachments can be uploaded. but Firefox Mozilla does not display the "delete" button. Now I'm doing it with I.Explorer and I'm gonna to upload the pics here...

Thanks Luky. If you look closely, 90% of the city is characterized by mid-density zones, no matter what kind. I knwo that the average building here is 5 or 6 floors high, but replacing all of them would be just a too hard work. I love my city, but I not such a maniac to replace every single Maxis building with the ones from STEX. Even more, we do have some pretty high building in the city center, and even some skyscraper, even if they are only 2, and part of popular, economic building trade 3.gif

PS: I've just uploaded some more pics, with the city by night.

What I like is that it really looks like my city: everything in the game is (almost) where it is in real life too! 4.gif

    Very nicely done!

Personally, I don't see anything wrong with the default maxis buildings (except that they can get awefully repetitive if you're not careful, which isn't the case in most of your pictures.)

To greatly improve maybe up the game settings to a maximum before taking pictures of the city.  It will greatly enhance the view of the picture and make it look more alive.

But as I siad, the city is pretty nice.

you need some custome content and also minimize the mayor control panel when taking pics

nice docks area though but I suggest you fill the gaps in your cities with trees (search the STEX for cycledog)

It's a very good start, but (if I may just throw in my two cents) I notice a lot of blank spaces, shouldn't those have parking lots/ base props of some sort? Overall, though, nice.

Yes, Carlo Felice... thanks for history lesson!

PS: I know that this city is far from being perfect, but it is like the real one: with pro and cons.

Just know that I haven't used anything more than buses and 2 rail stations as mass transit lines, because in my city there is nothing more than that... no matter how high commute time is.

    English translation:

I don't want to transform this thread as a private message exchange place, but beside the historical and naming explanation, I want to tell you that managing to reproduce the whole Sardinia in a Simcity's Region is quite a miracle! I was in a few sardinia's Army Ranges (Sardinia has a lot of them, even the largest in Europe): I hope you got enough Simoleons to be never in the urge of build any of them!

Hahahahah! 9.gif No, don't worry: I won't build them even because in SC4 are just missing such structures. The big military base near Mont'Urpinu hill is just enough and covers quite well our local situaton. As I told, this is a "virtual reduction" of my city: still I'm sure that, with a bit of imagination, livers here may recognize some very important locations, like Rome avenue.

In verity, the map is too small to include a more realistic city, without naming the fact that it is merely impossible do reproduce some not-perpendicular street/avenues intersection because of "unsupported" degree.

I'm just happy with my work because, simply, I like it and I feel like I've reached my goal.

Instead, if you want to take a look, here you can see some photos made at SARAS oil refinery and match them with the pics from Simcity. It is not much, because during the trip I've been forbidden from using my camera inside the industrial complex. I just want to say that the pollution produced is just much less than the one proposed by simcity. ^_^http://www.flickr.com/photos/15352490@N06/sets/72157602555234081/

Nice work but I would also agree one going on STEX to see what it has to offer.

With some more content from the STEX, this cj would look even better than it is now!

Orion79 i personally love a good NO CUSTOM CONTENT CJ... you don't see many of them at all... Its a real treat when someone can pull off a good Cj without custom stuff... But i do echo what autovino said about making sure you set you graphics settings to max and make sure you have the rendering set to software as that will help with the game... Either way here Orion i love the start and i will be looking in on you from time to time to see how you progress here... - pat
