You are really out doing yourself this time!

I personally wouldn't use the version with the screen, but I think you should definitely make one with the screen on there. You might be able to make it a prop so you don't have to export this beast twice.

It's settled then. I'll make two versions, one with and one without the screen. Still need a picture though...

HONG KONG, you are fantastic! How on earth did you find that photo!? I decided right at the start of this project though that I wasn't going to include that little building + walkway sticking out from one side of the base. It'd make for a very awkwardly shaped lot in game and it doesn't really add much to the building. I'm just going to cut the base off on the west side and replace it with a wall that'll look similar to how it does on the north (back) wall - which I'm modelling now.

Simfox, wow, coming from you, that's probably the best compliment anyone could possibly give me. I used to get so frustrated back in the days of Max 7 and even Gmax when I could never get my glass to look as nice as yours did.

Oh wow, the gold glass came out so cool.  For a screen, the classic is Bladerunner's 30-story beauty doll with the flower in her hair:

However, giant faces may seem overly peculiar ingame.

    Flickr offers this unobtrusive one:

"Nuli cujin"...promotional effort?  Err, I wonder what they are promoting...we'll have to fill out our own blanks for the blurry blue blobs that were forming just below.

However, I kinda like the irony of the non-descript nature scene on the tall techno tower, looking like a stylized landscape scene on those fanciful imported vases:

Aurora screen by sarahkim on Flickr

Or maybe the chibi santas tumbling down the neighboring building!  Okay, maybe the building as giant Ming vase is more fitting.

I wouldn't use the version with the screen but I look anyway to see how it makes.

That said, it is beautiful and the textures are very successful. 4.gif

Stupendous. I like that word lately. From STEX rating system. It describes perfectly this creation. Screen, no screen... Both, ofcourse...

Congratulations to grbac80 who scored the 666th post of this thread.

Hah! I'm not exactly fond of huge faces (or huge advertising in general), but that one would be an instant classic. 2.gif

Here's the night lighting scheme for the no-screen version. All that's left to do is some additional lighting on the base and roof.

The screen version will have much dimmer lighting like the real building and of course, a giant video screen on the front facade.

I've finished the base and the day export is already complete. I'll do the no-screen export tonight, and then the screen export the following day. Then it'll be released.

    It looks Fab...

Couple suggestions though... May be you could try to give you night map a bit greenish tint... this would set it nicely apart from the golden glass. Also try to replace your day ground map with a night one.

I really love whay you did with Aurora sign!

Haha, yeah, I actually got the idea from something Odainsaker and Simfox were talking about in the general discussion thread...

Simfox: At any rate it was very very impressive. Enormous screens (as tall as 7-8 story buildings) were erected on the square. For a month after the event all day, every day parade on these giants... Seeing 20m tall Comrade Hu and Zhao standing waving over busy traffic passing under them - buses as ants... very surrealistic feeling. Bizarre mixture of something one expects from North Korea mixed with 1st world prosperity of Beijing...

Odainsaker: A 20m tall Comrade Hu waving down to the bus traffic...must have been bizarre cool indeed!  Of course, no one quite does it quite like North Korea, such as here on their 60th anniversary...quote>

You gotta admit, after Team America, Old Kimmy is the coolest dictator around. 3.gif

    Anyways, it's on the STEX.

oh... Dear Leader.. I sort of appreciate irony/sarcasm in it. But the cartoony image clash somewhat with striking realism of the building. So I would join the choir of those asking for a different version of the screened model. Mind you Chinese don't really think much of Korea. In the latest national blockbuster called "How republic (meaning People republic) was established" released just before October1st festivities Mao (or was it Zhou Enlai - anyway one of those demigods) says (as a reply for Chan Kai Sheks suggestion to break china into two -North and South at Yangtze river) phrase that in the local context couldn't be treated anything but an utter insult: China is NOT a Korea to be broken up in two! Phrase like this in a movie like this released at date like this does not come without special approval from Politburo.

For the alternates, what you can do, is if you make the LOD only surround the screen, and you export that, and make it as a prop, you can reduce the filesize of your upload (that file is going to be huge).

    I'm digging the Geisha 3.gif

I'm with Jason though, I mentioned that a while back but this is the exact point where it becomes important, unless of course you want to use the STEX's new bigger upload size cap 17.gif

Those new ones are great, I especially like the Coke one being a fan of Coca Cola memorabilia.
