Here is what I have so far, I am working on adding branches.
It still needs some working on the transitions.

PS: in the top half you can see Maxis' work where it goes from straight track to the switch. Just cut and paste.

Trolca, I have run into problems with the texture making and would appreciate it if you could help. I have included what I have so far, I think I just need a couple more textures to finish it off. Here is a pic of what I would like the yard to look like when finished with the red lines being rail. I would like it to continue off to the left and eventually curve to straight.

All right. I'm working on a number of tile types. These crossovers are some examples.

Do you still want to make just one large yard or do you like my idea of making segments so that yards can be customized? With just one large yard there wouldn't be any fexability. Was was thinking on making a few different kinds of spurs too. Maybe others want to keep it simple but I like the building block approach.

I guess we could make one large yard for people who don't like the customization and then also make 'buidling blocks' for people who want to customize it. Thanks.

Ok, I figured out why I couldn't find the textures in the lot editor: I used the wrong group number. I am going to add the current textures to a .dat file and work with them in the lot editor now. Hopefully I should have an updated pic soon.

Wow, I haven't looked at this thread since its early days, thr work you guys are doing looks awesome 1.gif I'd vote for the customisable rail yard as i'd like smaller ones in medium/small cities and then maybe HUGE realistic sized ones in large cities 1.gif

Yeah, when we are done we can release the textures in one .dat file. However, if you mean to change the normal railroad tracks to the 4-track ones I don't think that is possible.

What about those crossovers? Didn't we modify the avenue to one way connectors? Can't we do the same thing here?

I'm not sure exactly what you mean but I guess we could put the 2-track crossover in so that you could plop it over existing rail lines; however, that would just be for aesthetics since the tracks are used like roads, each track is one way. Hope this answers your question.

Does everyone think this is acceptable for the first yard?

Yeah, that looks great. If you want to send me the textures I will put them into a .dat and create a lot. Now all we need is the train car props-those should be coming soon.

The props are done!  Only one problem: the file size of the prop DAT is 3.3 MB.  We need to find a way to get it uploaded ... I suggested PMing a Modd Squad so it could be attached in the Mods section.  This would be good, but if a person has a webserver, it would be even better ... 12.gif

Here is the first half. Due to the size, I had to split it. I included alpha channels. I wasn't sure if you wanted me to convert into FSH or not. I will if you want. Second half will be in the following post.

I'd be happy to host them. I have 47MB of free space on LycosUK. Just get MSN messenger, which has unlimited file transfer sizes, and send it to me. I'm inuyasha_kun_456@hotmail.com .

Hey Trolca, you don't need to mirror the textures because you can do that in the lot editor. Great job though, I should have a freight yard made up soon--once we get the train car props up. I will also make individual tiles for people who want to make their own 'building block' style.

Ok, here is the new lot with new textures. I am still going to add some props but just wanted to show you what it looks like and get some feedback.

Yeah, I agree.  Cranes and some alternate, smaller versions would be great.
Aside from that, looks great! 1.gif

Stardog13, make the train car props MUCH closer together. I have never seen a railyard like that before. The cars kinda should be like they are connected... 14.gif

    I shaln't mention humps 3.gif

I notice on the picture of the (near?) finished yard, that the normal rail line ends and has buffer stops at the end, are these removable for connection to the yard so it looks like the track is continuos?
