Is this me stuffing up somehow? It happens every so often to me with maps.
Map has a custom config file - I have in the folder.

Those three check out as far as I can see.  Their config maps are the right size for each and they are greyscale.  I am guessing that the person(s) having the problems is not also adding the config file to the region folder.

I'm having a terrible time figuring out how to import maps into the game. I download Portland, ME form the MEX and followed all the instructions to a T. I get the region config.bmp loaded properly but when I open up the region and do the shift + alt + ctrl + R and add the terrain map I downloaded I don't get anything. I have let it set for several hours hoping to come and find a wonderful new region. I tried importing the terrain map as both a .bmp and .gif.
If anyone has any suggestions I would greately appriciate them. This has been bothering me for two weeks now and I've finally broken down and asked for help.
    Thanks,

    atpayne

Did you remember to rename the config file?  Currently it's named config[1] in the MEX.  It should read just config.  I have also checked out the map and it is a greyscale JPEG so that's good.  I can't tell you what needs doing.  Sorry.

defence22:  No idea what you are doing wrong, too.  Please name the map you are attempting to render.  That way I can check it out and see if it's all Ok.

I finally got it to work. I had been putting the jpeg file in the region folder with my config.bmp. I tried loading the jpeg from the desktop and it worked. Thanks for the suggestions. 1.gif

When you click on the JPEG buttonit should ask you where you want to save it.  Remeber where you saved it so when you open the game you can find it easier.

If someone could please help me, I'm having problems accessing the Map Exchange.

Every time I try to enter the MEX (by clicking the link in the sidebar), it asks me to login. I'm already logged in to my account, so having to log in should not be required. Even so, when I do type my name and password into the login area, it does not make a difference and keeps returning me to the same log in screen. Obviously my account works, as I am able to post here on the forums.

Also, if anybody can point me in the directions of a height map for the Avalon Peninsula of Newfoundland or a height map for Labrador, it would be greatly appreiciated. I'm particularly interested in creating a replica of the city of St. John's, Newfoundland (oldest city in North America).

Thanks for any help you guys can offer.

    I downloaded a few maps.
And with map Carolina en Twin Cities i have a problem.
I open the region and then ctrl shift alt r and i open the jpg. (it in the same directory).

Then the region starts to build up. After a while my sim city goes to my desktop. But keeps on working, but i can't open it.
When it's finished i can go back to Sim City. But then the half of the region is been build up and the other half is stil flat.

    Hi.
Just discovered this. If I remember where I will credit.
If anyone is having problems with wrong size errors when using JPEG files and there is no config.bmp.Check the file size in windows explorer eg 1025*1025.To find the size of required bitmap.bmp do this simple arithmetic.
    (1025 - 1)/64. 1025*1025 gives a config.bmp size of 16*16.Find a 16*16 config.bmp file in another region folder.Remember where it is.
Start SC4 and create a new region and name it the same as your JPEG file.
COPY the config.bmp you found earlier to your new region folder, overwring when asked. Open an old region then open your new region (it will still be a large flat expanse)
    Press Ctrl+Shift+Alt+R
When the selection box appears, navigate to your new map JPEG and select.
Your new region should now start to form.Have patience,it can take a while.
    Hope that helps.
ps. It doesn't matter where you store the JPEG.

    Map: Washington D.C.

    Link: http://www.ussdragonstar.com/simcity4/
Error: I have the same problem as a couple other people. When i press ctrl, alt, shift, r, and import the map, it says that the map is 0x0 and needs to be 1025x1025. I think the specific problem is when i save the grayscale picture. Don't when u save the pic, it needs to be saved a way so u can actually see it? When i save it, and i try to view the file, it says no preview available. How do u save the pic so that u can see it. i save it as washington.bmp.

Whenever I go to copy the JPEG image into the region's folder, there is no image. It just says Save page as and it is in a Web Page format. Either I'm really stupid or this is a real problem. Please help. Thanks 10.gif.

I see an image, but there is no way other than setting the image as my background to get it.  I'll let Dirk know about this.

Sorry if this is not intuitive enough.  But at the bottom there's a link that says Right Click Save As

Right click that link (not the image) and select Save As to download the image.

We've had to change how we handle things with the jpgs unfortunately, due to ST resources.  The images are hosted on the mirror so they must be downloaded via Right Click Save As...

This may be revisted in the future when I have more time.  35.gif

I downloaded an Earth map by Nashta. I did everything as it is supposed to be done and it started doing everything. After half an hour it turned into a black screen with a little box saying that the Direct 3D wasen't right. What is a Direct 3D? If you can tell me what's wrong, please do.
    Thank you

Direct 3d is the display driver in your computer. Make sure you have the latest one offered by Microsoft.

I suspect the problem was that your screen saver kicked in. You should always set your screensaver to NONE before doing any region rendering.
