For those interested I''ve been doing research on importing Autocad and 3dstudio max into GMAX. Plugins do exist for this luckily.

http://mojo.gmaxsupport.com/Sections/MaxScripts.html

These maxscripts should be able to import both Autocad and 3dstudio max into gmax usable formats

However as MaxisBrian stated in another thread, I wouldnt count on these working either. Learn Gmax I think before you completely devote yourself to trusting these scripts for import

they dont work well, they will get geometry and such in, but anything gmax doesnt support will simply crash the script, and as that's roughly half of the stuff I use, we'll have to look for alternatives.

kary, I know what their bat is going to do, it's going to render 20 views and make the shells for zooms 1 and 2, then plop the other zooms down on shells you have to make, then slice and dice. I've been programming long enough to know it's not impossible to do such things outselves, could it be done in 2 months? I think it's time we broke new ground, found new vistas. now all I need is an advanced math book 1.gif

That would be my point. Its possible, however I really dont reccomend it unless absolutely neccessary and if you're willing to go through a couple of headaches.

Nevertheless the scripts are there 1.gif

DarkMatter is already working on this too I believe so we can try helping him but as far as I know he hit a wall awhile ago.

Yes, well, DarkMatter's all over the topic of a BAT, as Karybdis said...I get the feeling, somehow, that's what Hayly will end up using.  She's too smart for the Maxis one!  3.gif

Umm... isn't this possible by just exporting the .dwg or .max (in its respective program) into a .3ds, and then importing the .3ds in gmax?

Granted, I believe that the exporting process would get rid of the textures and possibly cameras and lighting, but at least the mesh would still be intact (which is really the important part).

You can only import 3ds files and dxf files. The 3ds importer f***es up the scaling, though, so I convert it to a DXF before I import.

When I made my Sara H. Bingham Hospital , I used 3D Studio Max 7 to make the building model and apply textures. I then saved it as a .3ds, and flawlessly imported it into gmax, textures and all. I then added the roof junk, modified the LODs, and otherwise tweaked with the model, but it's good to know that this can be done.
