Soda Drinkers Have Higher Cancer Risk

A study revealed that those who drink soda, a huge percentage of the world’s population, might have a higher risk of developing esophageal (throat) cancer (ACE). The study showed a strong link between the accelerated rate of people drinking carbonated soft drinks and the growing number of cases of esophageal cancer over the past 20 years.

Some statistics related to the steady rise in carbonated soft drink consumption include:

  • During the past half-century, the number of carbonated soft drink drinkers rose more than 450 percent and jumped from 10.8 gallons in 1946 to 49.2 gallons in the year 2000.
  • Over the last 25 years, the cases of ACE have exceeded 570 percent among American white males and the rates have continued to rise.

A significant biological explanation showed that the increased dose and length of esophageal exposure to acid led to episodes of gastric distension that triggered acid reflux.

The study also broke down the consumption of carbonated soft drinks (CSD) to minutes of acid exposure and discovered that the average soda drinker consumed over 32,000 additional minutes of acid exposure a year. Other statistics have exposed a rising trend of ACE cases in countries with a per capita intake of CSD that exceeded 20 gallons.

Conclusions from the study prompted researchers to say further emphasis is needed upon the importance of diet patterns on health trends.

Dr. Mercola's Comment:

Throat cancer is a particularly hard cancer to beat--more than 90 percent of patients with invasive esophageal cancer die within five years of diagnosis--and this is just one more reason why you should really avoid drinking soda.

For more reasons you can read my past article on the dangers of soda and find out why I list it as one of the five worst foods you can eat (or drink in this case).

Also, several studies have pointed out the link between sugar and increased rates of cancer. Soda is loaded with sugar, which not only feed cancer but also throw off insulin levels, leading to damaging effects on your health. For these reasons alone, eliminating soda from your diet is an absolute necessity to maintaining optimal health.

Normalizing your insulin levels is one of the most powerful physical actions you can take to improve your health and lower your risk of cancer along with other long-term chronic health conditions such as obesity and diabetes. Fortunately, it is also the variable most easily influenced by healthy eating and exercise.

And if you think you are immune to the damaging effects of soda because you drink diet versions, then you need to read this article to learn the dangers of aspartame and other artificial sweeteners.

This article is taken from Dr.Mercola's website  www.mercola.com

I just thought that this was a little interesting considering how i drink pop a lot and ya know.. It could end up killing me if this is true. I think im gonna cut back a little on the pop haha.  There are also other articles on this website about sodium benzoate combining with part of the soda to make a very dangerous and lethal chemical.

While soda probably isn't all that good for you, I wouldn't take anything Dr. Mercola says too seriously. The guy is right on the borderline between real medical practice and nonsense quackery. He's twice been warned by the FDA for making false claims.

if soda causes cancer so easily, I doubt it would be on the market anymore.

in other news, a swedish study (you've gotta believe this, sweden's the first country with cell phones) found that long term exposure to cell phone radiation can cause brain tumors!

http://news.zdnet.com/2100-1040_22-6056325.html

soon, esophageal cancer and brain cancer will be like lung cancer, a cancer no one cares about. why? because those people with these cancers "caused it themselves"

Living causes cancer. Cancer cells are a natural by product of the human immune system. The proplem is when the body doesn't flush them out.

Yea, people live longer than they used to in 1949. These aren't "problems" they're side effects of living longer.

So I suppose this also means eating pizza can give you cancer? Because pizza gives me heartburn, and I guess that acid can cause cancer

I guess the only way to not get cancer is to be like paris hilton and consume nothing but altoids and bottled water....

Anyways, I dont care, I dont drink enough soda to get cancer from it, and there is a lot more things out there more dangerous than soda that is culturally acceptable and legal to sell and consume.

The problem here is, there are way to many factors leading to the development of cancer cells to worry about it. If we avoided everything that gave us cancer, we might as well be dead anyways.

I think the avg LE in the 1800's was like 50 something. , This was because of a number of reason that we've addressed. Now that there is better food, better hygine (sp?), litle disease, and a regulated work place people live a LOT longer than they used to. A longer life allows the DNA in cells more chances to mess up when it replicates and increases the liklihood of cancer developing. Nobody "catches" cancer

I'd say 60 years old is when the majority of cancers set in - - - - Of course there are exceptions to the rule
