Hey all, I'm back from RL! This idea of mine is based off of Mike the Mayor's Euro Guessing Game. The object of the game is simple: I will (eventually) have a totally random question about architecture, architects, cities, and mass transportation. Whoever gets the answer first gets . . . to feel good for a short period of time! Some of my questions are ones I have come up with myself, and some are derived from books and documentaries I have. So, the first question is really easy, and soon it'll get harder.

1. What building is claimed as being the world's first skyscraper? obscure hint: the top floors had fireplaces for the rich occupants. TopCliff

EDIT: Jeez, is it really that hard a question where over 200 people have to search the internet and their skyscraper tomes for this question? Come on, you guys! I bet someone famous like DT could get this easy! Peeshaw, you guys!

Darnit! Yes, the Home Insurance Building, built in 1885 in Chicago, etc. You're good, ya knows dat? All right, next question (somewhat easy).

    2. Which mass transit system is the only one that runs 24 hours a day, even on holidays? Later. TopCliff

EDIT: Actually it did have fireplaces, which is ironic because the building was part of Chicago's vow to never let the city burn down again. Funny world.

I'm going to guess Eifel Tower because last time I was in Paris they shut it down because of its energy consumption.

actually in reference to your first question, there is some debate on that...the first skyscraper honor is also claimed by the flatiron building in new york city. in fact at texas tech university where i was an architecture major (the second highest in accredidation points in the US) they recognize the flatiron building as the first skyscraper.

Yo guys, this ain't a debate thread! From all my architecture tomes, it credits the Home Insurance Building in Chicago as the first skyscraper. I know it's not official, but that's what my references state. TopCliff

Okay, first off: this has to do with architecture because the point is to understand and test ourselves on the random part of what all of us here have in common: a love of cities and architecture. And second, the answer is what some people came close to in NYC: the answer is Times Square, due to all the jumbotrons, restaraunts, and numerous hotels. Yes, that's the answer according to my numerous tomes and the Guiness Book of World Records. Next question!

    4. What city had an ancient underground water system with a main drainage that lies right under its Chinatown? TopCliff

Well, if anyone requests a hint, I will give them a hint, although very obscure. So, here's a hint: Its region was part of the massive Roman Empire. TopCliff

Venice? I know in LA the drainage is close to Chinatown, but its water system isn't all that old.

Yes, it is Paris! The exact location of the main well as well as its tunnel leading to it is under an old Art Deco hospital on the fringe of Chinatown. Also, where did Sydney come from? Australia was never under Roman control: too far away for its ships, I think. Next question (super easy):

    5. What was the rate that floors were being completed on the Empire State Building during construction?

I'm sorry, I wrote that wrong. What was the weekly rate of floor completion during the 13 month construction? Hehe . . . TopCliff

The staff have discussed this and we have decided to keep this thread here. Topcliff, your responce pretty much summed up my answer as to why it will stay among other answers.

First off, thank you for not letting this fall through the cracks. Second off, the fastest rate (still is according to my resources) was 4.5 floors a week, in the midst of the Depression. Next question:

    6. What does the CN of CN Tower stand for? I also ask that anyone who's from Toronto refrain from giving the answer: home field advantage. TopCliff
