The answer is the second post in this thread. Instead of just leaping in, try reading what has gone five years before.

I hate to bump this but it's the first Google result on ST for this problem, and everywhere else that explains it doesn't tell you how to fix it on 7 or Vista. You need to add a system variable to fix it. (Just had the problem, and this may help anyone else.)

If you're on 7, and I assume Vista, type variable into the search bar (In the start menu) and click edit system variables. At the bottom of that little window is a button called Environment Variables, click it. Add a new one on the lower box ( System Variables) called GMAXLOC with the Variable value as the path to your GMAX folder (Mine is D:/Gmax for example). Then it will all work nicely.

I think that variable is automatically added to your environment after you have confirmed your licence for Gmax. I've never had to set it, even when I was on Windows.

It wasn't for me, although I never had the problem before. Installed GMAX about 5 times and never had a problem. Could be because I used a custom folder location.

Don't think so. GMAX puts that variable in the O/S when it is activated the first time. It should be OK if you don't move it after that.

Has never happened to me. I wonder if it gets stored in the registry? I haven't looked.

Could be a registry issue.I have had it happen to me,it's been a long time

since i encountered it though never really got into the cause.

Reinstalling does fix it or adding the info manually.

Hey guys,

I'm having the same issue and I tried attempting the steps above, sadly Gmax wont let me re-register it after I un-install it (it just installs and does not ask me to register it)

Any help would be appreciated.

The variable is set when gmax is initialized.  You cannot install the BAT without first initializing gmax.  There is a command line option to force a gmax initialization, but I don't have it.  Anyone?

If gMax isn't asking for registration, most likely it can read existing registration info from your registry, i.e. this is not required.
Have you installed gmax to c:\gmax as is the default for this application? Sadly this is one of those applications where moving it from the default folder can cause a number of headaches. If you are not comfortable with computers, you may find it easier to re-install into the default location. Otherwise just set the correct location as per this post:

Do you like custom textures, but don't like all the work involved creating them?, take a look at the Texture Automation options here. Change the look and feel of your transit networks, with the minimum of effort, for example customised versions of my Sidewalk NAM (SWN) and Terrain Grass NAM (TGN) mods, and much more besides.

If you did everything here like I did and it still isnt working dont forget to download the recommended downloads as well found on the same page below the BAT download. I realize that this sounds really simple and I overlooked it I'm sure someone else might have as well.

That's actually a good point, the texture fix is commonly missed and that can cause much frustration when your renders don't work later.

Having the same problem on Windows 7 x64. When I go to 'edit system variables' GMAXLOC with the C:/Gmax is already listed in the environment variables. And I tried all the other things in this thread none of which worked. I also already have the modelnames script fix so that is not the problem either.

Any other suggestions?

Within SC4BAT (not gMax, although technically they are one and the same), click customize and "Configure Paths". Is the information here all correct? I.e. corresponding to the actual installed location?

I think there are problems installing this application if UAC (User Account Control) is enabled and you don't have full admin rights. If all else fails, uninstall and install with Admin rights or disable UAC temporarily when installing. Remember this application pre-dates such necessities and so won't know how to deal with them automatically.

I had this exact problem just now, when reinstalling this. It was solved by going into environment settings under system > advanced, however  I would *highly* recommend to bring this up in the download section for BAT both here, and on sc4devotion that this is a likely problem to encounter if trying a fresh install on a new computer.

  • Thanks 2
