I'm sure we all know that Simtrop IS a trustworthy site that shouldn't be blocked. This doesn't reflect well on Norton.

Yeah, makes you wonder how many other legit websites get blocked. 41.gif

I do IT for a living, one thing my company does is builds and sells new computers and laptops. im with liryon, dont use vista unless your ready for a lot of things like this to happen. All i hear from customers that have bought vista is complaints about compatibilty and access to things (like websites, some dont even work with IE7 yet) or even being able to install their favorite software. We have managed to make our vista machine work well with many common programs that say "vista ready" and some that do not, but only after hours of troubleshooting for most. If you like a challange try it out, If you just want the newest OS from microsoft, maybe think twice. When the first service pack comes out it will help fix many issues. Just like windows XP, it will probably be untill service pack two that it actually becomes easy to use on a daily basis with all the software out there. I will admit however, vista has some very nifty features.

BTW

One customers laptop with vista i have in shop

Athlon 64 3800+

1GB Mem

vista home ultimate

This is at idle with no programs running

computer CPU usage: 48%

used physical Mem.: 552786, thats half!!

Vistas a resource hog, without atleast gig of Memory and a Dual core processor, it will be pretty slow.

Let me just say I fully trust Simtropolis, and not NAV 2007

Liryon - I like Vista and IE and im not going to change. Before i bought Vista, I tried Linux (knoppix) and well it didn't work so I payed money for an operating system that i could get to work.

Oh and i have firefox as well.

EDIT: Cody426 - Well i run ultimate and i did have some trouble at the start with compatibilty but within a day i had got it all working for what i need which is basically, Simcity 4, Sims 2, internet, email, visual basic, runescape and simtropolis, and a bit more. I only have 1 GB of RAM and a Core 2 duo e6600 CPU. I built my PC to learn about computers and how to build them and stuff.

so i chose Vista (OEM,cheaper) even though a lot of people told me not to. And just stuck to it , after failing with Linux, Now currently everything works how i want it with  exeptions now and then.

To me all the negative reviews and news and all about vista is a load of rubbish.

warrior - "only" is a lot to say about a e6600 C2D, thats a lot faster than what most poeple have, even myself. and like i said, if you don't have at least 1gig (i see i forgot the 1), which you have, it will be slow. The other difference is that you say "I built my computer to learn", that sets you apart from most my customers. They don't want to learn it, they just want easy, fast and reliable. I figure a lot of people on simtropolis are fairly savy computer people considering the modding and BAT stuff, but not everybody is and i wanted to relay problems common users have on a daily basis just so any one thinking about it has some input. Vista has simply not been out long enough to refine it like the other OS's and thats where the negative reviews come from. I think its great you worked out the bugs with vista already, it took us a couple hours to get ours going also. why did linux fail?

I ran Vista Ultimate for two or three weeks and ran SC4/RH without trouble.  However, there was so much messing about to do anything that I concluded that it wasn't ready for people, and couldn't be bothered fussing with it.  My O/S programming experience goes back to the 1960's.

Linux is fine if you are a C programmer.  Otherwise, it is not really very people friendly either.  While I prefer the UNIX environment for serious work, I like XP for gaming and general off the shelf type stuff.

An operating system for the general public must be like a refrigerator.  Turn it on, set the temperature and just use it.  In fact, the operating system should be invisible and just do what you say, without arguments.

Cody426 - Sorry if i frased it wrong but I had to get off the computer and was rushing. Linux- I downloaded it ( which took 12 hours) on to my Xp machine did all the stuff to put it on disc like it said in the instructions on thje webpage, then put it into my drive on the pc i built (this was before i even bought Vista) I got to the the place where you install it but i couldn't find how to install it on to my HDD (so I would have had to have the disc everytime I went on my pc which seemed pretty pointless) and when it loaded linux the screen went blank and said out of range. I then plugged it into my TV (with the VGA port and HDMI) and everything was to big and went off the screen when I tried to change this, the apply button, or equivelent was off the screen and i couldn't get to it. I phoned my my uncle who suggested had linux to me and he said when he next came over to see us he would look at it, he did and he couldn't do anything so i went and bought Vista. After i installed it I tried using Virtual PC to have linux and vista( i didn't want to waste 12 hours of downloading) this also didn't work so i gave up. It's not linux that failled , probaly me or my screen which is ancient.

I've been running Vista since the Beta and have had very little (if any) of those issues. Infact, my resource usage has gone down and Simcity has performed BETTER under Vista then it ever did with XP. My laptop has the AMD Athlon 3800+, 2 GB  RAM, ATI vid card, with Home Premium. Vista has given me a hell of a lot less trouble then the antique junk that XP is.

Anyway... back to the topic.... I'd suggest to not use Norton because it IS a resource hog and one of the worst cases of bloatware in recorded history.

You mean like Mac OSX? 3.gif

I remember something like this a while ago, when Norton thought that Jeronij's new canals were a virus.  21.gif

Warrior: did you change the BIOS settings so the CD drive with the Linux CD in it boots first?

Yes i booted up the computer and inserted the linux disc and went into the bios and changed it so the drive would be the first boot device. It then carried on and said press any key to install knoppix, i did and it did all its stuff but it never put anything on the hard drive becausewhen i turned the computer off took the linux disc out and turned the computer on it went passed the Cd and to the Hard drive and then said it couldn't find anything.

So to actually get on the linux os i had to the cd in the drive which is piontless as then i wouldn't have a cd drive.

    How to fiz:

    A - Get a Mac

    B- You won't need antivirus

C - Get Firefox, or just use Safari

Microsoft even says on their Mac software website to use Safari rather than a Mac version of Internet Explorer. They know they can't compete.

Security through obscurity only works when you're a small minority of the market.  Malware for Macs does exist, and while it's limited in number, and indications are that it's hard to program, it is possible, and once there is a large enough market share to warrant attacking the Mac, attacks will greatly increase in numbers.  The idea of being immune to malware is kind of misguided.
