It was made into a movie first and it was the first one most people read since it's the one that became famous. But it is second, both chronologically and in terms of order written.

There is also a third book, The Lost Symbol, which is not as good as the first two.

Dan Brown also wrote Digital Fortress (which is awesome) and Deception Point (which is not so much), but those are unrelated.

I loved Digital Fortress.

By the way, I have an Amazon account, some Amazon gift cards, and a kindle but I would much rather read as many books as possible without paying for them.

Do any of you recommend any public domain books?

I am going to reread The Sleeper Awakes. I will finally finish reading The Time Machine. I will reread or finish Dracula (I don't remember it but I know I read at least part of it). I will get around to reading 20k Leagues Under the Sea and War of the Worlds, read the original Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass, try out Carmilla and Frankenstein, and finally read all the Sherlock Holmes stories I have yet to read. I got Pride and Prejudice as well though I do not plan on reading it.

Mind you, my native language is English though I would rather read it in Spanish if that was its original written language (lots of things are lost in translation).

To what list do you have reference? If it is in the public domain it is not likely to be on a copyrighted list. You could start with the Code of Hammurabi, perhaps?

Pretty much any book written before 1935.

IMHO, Tarzan is a fantasy. Note that the trailer for the new John Carter movie has tharks. I am dying to see it. The producers seem to have gone along with the hexapodal life on "Mars".

Just ordered A Song Of Ice And Fire on Amazon (the first four volumes, anyway). Should get here in two weeks or so, according to Amazon's shipping thing. I'm quite looking forward to having a decent series to read.

Anything I should consider while reading the series?

Just suspend your disbelief and take the aliens as they come. You don't see them much at the beginning.

Don't try to read it all in one sitting.

    all are 900+ pages.

I used the War and Peace method when I read that set of novels when they were new. George R.R. Martin has clearly taken a few pages from the ideas of Leo Tolstoy as to how to write an epic. This is quicker because you don't have to wade through a lot of Russian history and culture to understand it, but don't be shy of putting it down for a week or so, now and then, and letting it percolate. It took me five years to get through War and Peace and I am generally a fast reader.

I think it it took me 2 1/2 months to read Johnathan Strange And Mr Norrel during my lunch breaks at work and that topped off at 1006 pages.

Just ordered A Song Of Ice And Fire on Amazon (the first four volumes, anyway)...

I got the ebook version just before Christmas and I still haven't started reading it ... I think I'm a bit daunted by what's involved ... its something I do want to read, but in the meantime till I get my nerves up, I've been reading Jasper Fforde "One of our Thursdays is Missing"

I've been watching Game of Thrones as well, so maybe that might help me with a bit of a background on the series. I'm getting the books because I'm actually intrigued by this universe and want to read more about it...

During that period I was on the road a lot and didn't take it with me. However, I found it tough slugging when I did read it. I like to understand the nuances of a novel like that, and the naming conventions in Imperial Russia took me on quite a side trip.

Have you checked your local library's website?

For instance, I can log in here and and download library books. They "expire" after 14 days and are no longer readable.

The selection isn't as broad as I would like but I have borrowed half a dozen books already using this method.

I still use my amazon account to check out but it doesn't cost me anything.

We can inspire others through witness so that one grows together in communicating. But the worst thing of all is religious proselytism, which paralyzes: “I am talking with you in order to persuade you.” No. Each person dialogues, starting with his and her own identity. The church grows by attraction, not proselytizing.    - Pope Francis

Libraries have books with pictures, banks of computers, and a comfortable atmosphere for reading. They are also funded by the government. That means that they will stick around for a while.
