This is a sim city 4 fansite, so what will happen to it when sim city 5 comes out?

When SC5 comes out, ST will make the switch. I wouldn't be surprised if Dirk has forums on the site for discussion of both games for a while, but I imagine it will probably switch over fairly quickly when the game does come out. We'll all be ready for the change by then. Granted that's all speculation on my part, but I wouldn't be surprised if it happens.

I think that it is really unlikely that SC5, if it ever arrives, will be anywhere near as open a game as SC4. In any event it will take a year or so after release (and I think that's optimistic) to get to where the community was in terms of figuring stuff out about SC4 in 2004. Heck, we are still figuring out worthwhile stuff about SC4 four years after its release.

Stuff like this [ linkie ] tells me it will be a while before there is a mass transition to SC5, whether here or anywhere else.

Just my 2 cents.

It's true that there are still a lot of things people are discovering about SC4 and the game is still very popular (at least here), but it has been time for a new Simcity game for quite some time now and, when the game does come out, I don't doubt that the SC4 forums will co-exist with the new Simcity forums for a while, but eventually (and I think very quickly) it'll be replaced..

Remember back in the days when SC3000 was replaced with SC4? People were still (and some still are I think) coming up with new ways of modding that game, as far as it was possible, but when SC4 came out, SC3000 lost almost all appeal..

I for one think that, when SC5 comes along, it'll replace SC4 very quickly..

I would like to think that there will be a SimCity 5, but the last update on the SimCity was on Thursday Mar 1, 2007, which is not that long ago, but the thing is that the last update before that was posted Tuesday Dec 14, 2004, which is over 2 years, and even then the new news posting is about SimCity4 on DS platform, not the SimCity4 release.

It would have thought that Maxis would have released a new patch for the game by now.

Still, I think that Simcity 4 will continue on this site, as there has been so much progress with the NAM and RHW, losing them for Simcity 5 would be like losing an arm, and when and if Simcity5 is ever released, it will be a long way off from now.

I think that Simtropolis has stopped Simcity 4 from being forgotton about, and I doubt that would stop because of SImcity5.

To be honest, I'm happy with SC4 the way it is now. Even to this date major discoveries are being made about the game. Although the latest patch for SC4 is really outdated, I do not believe that Maxis has forgotten about Sim City and it will release another sequel game soon, in time.

I too am very happy with SC4, and personally, I don't want or need an SC5.  Maybe in the next decade or so, but not anytime soon.

The fact of the matter is, as David (dedgren) and mikeaut1 pointed out, there's a lot of stuff we can do with SC4 that people want in SC5 through modding, even without acquiring the source code.  I've seen this first hand with my work as part of the NAM and RHW, and there are nearly unlimited possibilities.

For example, the next NAM will include Draggable GLR, thanks to memo.  That technology can be further expanded to make pretty much any puzzle piece draggable.  It's also possible to infinitely expand the width of any network.  Want a 37-lane Avenue with a functioning center turn lane?  A 60-lane RHW?  It can be done.  The only real restraint is time and manpower.  3.gif

Don't worry about SC5 and enjoy what you have2.gif.  As Adrian Belew of the progressive rock band King Crimson put it, "You have to be happy with what you have to be happy with."

Wow, this is a "State of the Simtropolis" and a "Whence Sim City 5" thread combined in one!  One of the genius aspects of Maxis for both Sim City and The Sims is they were created for Mods and Custom Content.  I used to think of both as "cheating", but now I have a hard drive full of them for both games and fill all the more enriched in my game play pleasure for it.  B/C of that investment though,  it is a little bit hard to see  what would happen to all of it with a new version of the game.  I would hope that Maxis would have enough insight to allow the hard work of the fans carry forward in the next games or make the games so radically different and wonderful that the investment still wouldn't be missed.  But having said that I still personally feel that Maxis did take Sim City for granted while going on to greener(money) pastures; good thing for them the game still has a hard core fandom.  And having said that (and bring this back on subject), I noticed that Dirk didn't hesitate to take chances w/ new opportunities, successfully or unsuccessfully, such as NAM, Sim Mars, The Sims II, or Sporeum.  So I wouldn't be surprised if the website follows with whatever trends develop in Sim City.

Exactly.

I remember reading many-a times in my SC3K days when people said they did not see any way a new game could replace the current (at the time) game.

Of course, when the new official screenies came out, tunes changed.

But, there were still a lot who said they would never get the newer game.

Of course, when the new official videos came out, tunes changed.

Still, there were a few who said SC3K was the way to go.

Once SC4 came out, many tunes changed.

There are still a few SC3K sites out there, but they are far a few between. The official site is all but dead (you thought the official SC4 site was dead? Ha!).

The trend will continue with SC5. Believe me, once we see what they have done with the game (and who knows what tricks they have up their sleeves), we will be getting the game. From my point of view, each installment of the game has been a vast improvement over the last - I have high hopes that trend will continue.

As for Simtropolis? I do not know. It takes a lot of money to run this site, and a lot is still paid by one man. I have high hopes that we will continue, but that decision is up to that same guy.

well, if SC5 come out within this decade, and dirk is still running this site, then I believe that ethier this site will become what SCC is currently, or this site will become the MTS2 of SC5.

I know that if another SC comes out that this site will adapt for it, the only question is whether this site will still be around by that time.

Personally, I'm not worried whether or not this site actually continues to that point because there will always be a couple amazing fansites to a amazing game, this site is a example since this has one of the largest collection of custom content to any SC4 fansite.

So honestly, I think that only time will tell. 2.gif

Thats why I'm considering donating 1/2 of all proceeds from my Simtropolis book to Dirk.

Honestly, I think SC5 will be a disappointment to many of us, especially judging by Will Wright's comments about making the game simpler (appealing to a larger audience).  I think SC4 will continue to be the preference for many hardcore Simmers, especially with what has been done to it and what will continue to be done to it.  Simtropolis may have to serve both games for a long while.  But the optimist in me hopes that SC5 will be great and just as dynamic as 4.

PS If Maxis is smart (I'm not an insider nor do I know a thing about how the business works) they'd utilize the huge community here on Simtropolis and other fansites in making SC5.  Imagine the possibiliites when game-making becomes a democratic process with the input and even direct help of unpaid BATters.  Geez , could Maxis even collect ad revenues by putting real-life businesses into the game?? Just some thoughts.

hm... interesting thoughts...

me, too, I believe that there'll be a co-existence of sc4 and sc5 topic for some time, like the usual time it takes to spread a game and to familiarize with it, but I think, as soon as this time is passed, the sc4 part will become more and more ... well... obsolete is to strong, but I think the right direction. I bet there're still people working on sc4, figuring out new things, but the main interest will be sc5, slowly but constantly taking over the st.

A lot of good people work at Maxis, but if you look at the company before and after it got acquired by EA you'll see a big shift in its games. Games like SC2k, SimTower, and SimIsle had a lot of depth without a huge deal of focus on graphics. With SC3k there was a huge drop in quality (IMO) and this was continued in vanilla SC4. SC2k was a complete game while SC4 was released early without a ton of content that made it unique. The only two big improvements I saw in SC3k and SC4 were the graphics engine and the ability to easily mod the game. Unfortunately, the ability to mod the game is EA's way of saying that content is now the consumer's problem, they'll just give you the engine. If we carry this forward to SC5, I'm guessing that stock SC5 will be incredibly bland with terrible AI and useless, annoying advisors. The traffic system will be barely functional and of the thousands of suggestions submitted on forums across the web I doubt more than a handful of the easiest to implement will make it to the final game. Again, Maxis is a good company, but they're under the yoke of a goliath who cares for nothing except profits. I hope they prove me wrong. I'd be the first to look back at this post and laugh at my foolish pessimism. On the other hand I don't think we'll have to worry about any of this for a long time because the Sims franchise is keeping Maxis' hands full at the moment and EA is not about to drop that cash cow.

EDIT: In all fairness to Maxis, most games are released well before they should be nowadays and most developers are forced to compromise their games to squeeze that extra bit of profit from the market, so SC4 is on par with the norm. It's up to the community that pays for the game to make a game playable. I'm not too bitter, am I??
