Larger one-ways

For quite awhile I had been wondering if there was a way you could make wider one-way roads so you could make a signature boulevard or just 5 lane one-ways.  I had wondered if it would be possible to make it so if you dragged a one-way heading north and then dragged another one-way heading north right next to it the game could then join them into a larger 5 lane one-way road similar to the way the game turns the ANT into the RHW when it is dragged along side by side.  After seeing the RHW in action I think it could be done.

I am not sure if this would be a project that any of the modding gurus could or would be able to work on.  I understand that there are few of us here that are familiar with the arcane art of messing with pathing and the NAM.  Just hoping this could be an idea that could catch the eye of someone with the time and talent to tackle this (if it is doable at all).

I can do some of the texture work if called upon and I realize that this could be a big task.  But I think this could be great  if done.  Attached are some pictures of what I'm talking about.

Now this is only the second time I've started a thread asking about modding a transit network.  The 1st time was about 2 or 3 years ago when I made some stations and trams and wanted color-coded trams for a light-rail network using the heavy-rail lines...That ultimately turned into the GLR.

That would be really great if you could do so. I wish I knew how to do stuff like this, because I'd gladly help.

Hi mikeseith-

Yes, what you're talking about can indeed be done, and jplumbley was working on a 5-lane One Way Road mod at one point that worked in this same way--we had been collaborating on a "Network Widening Mod" (NWM).  Here's a pic from the earlier development on it:

owr5pathtestdqk1.jpg

He managed to get this orthogonal section mostly functional, but due to various circumstances, the project has been on hold for awhile, though we've been talking about possibly getting it going again.

The other component of the NWM project was the Turning Lane Avenues (TLA) project which I had been working on, which basically creates an Avenue-type network (it's actually based off of Roads) with a functional center turn lane, and part of the TLA idea also involved a 7-lane TLA (6 lanes + 1 center turn lane), which I did manage to get pathed and functioning some time ago:

tla7repathedxf5.jpg

It basically works by dragging 3 Roads side-by-side in an RHW-style override.

And I might add that the textures you created look very nice, and thanks for posting those.  A lot of us transit-modding types aren't the greatest texture artists, which has actually held up a lot of mods (including the RHWMIS), so any qualified help on that end (I'd say you're more than qualified) is greatly appreciated.2.gif  I'd like to get this whole project going again once I get the RHWMIS ready for the first phase of its release.

There's actually a multitude of different ways in which the RHW technology can be re-applied to extend the possibilities for all the different networks in the game, and a lot we can still do without Maxis releasing the source code.

Hope that answers your question, and thanks for bringing it up!

@mikeseith I do not have much time at the moment. But if you start a thread over at SC4Devotion, I would definately be able to talk there. While at work ST is blocked for me so I cannot follow what has happened.

Sorry, for the inconvenience. But unfortunately that is the way it is.

    Aha, I knew it!

Thanks for the answer Tarkus.  I had been thinking of drawing some intersection pieces to go along with that other texture.  I'll work on creating them and upload them here on this thread and maybe that will inspire you and your co-modder to create this.

By the way all your projects are great tarkus.  Keep up the good work.

No problem, mikeseith2.gif.  And thanks for the compliments.

If you want to make more textures, that would be terrific--thanks for offering!  This certainly will inspire jplumbley and I to get working on the NWM again.  I'd say you've revived the project.

Lollothebest:  Well, as I announced in the RHW thread just a few minutes ago, the NWM is going to become a full scale project, comprising the RHW, the TLAs and the Wider One-Ways project.

As far as how I got my knowledge on modding, it was somewhat of a painstaking process.  I mainly learned through trial-and-error, and help from a few more experienced modders.  As far as a tutorial on RUL overrides, there isn't really a tutorial out there, only some documentation that Tropod did a couple years ago, which isn't publicly available at the moment.  (Some of it is loosely scattered throughout the RUL discovery thread in the Modding-Research and Development forum, though).   I mainly learned it from staring at the RUL code from the RHW for awhile, figuring out what it did.

I am hoping to make available my own new tutorial covering a multitude of transit modding topics, including RUL overrides (among many other things) here in the near future.  In the meantime, you can PM me if you have questions about it.

Hope that answers your questions. 2.gif

Oh my.... You all rock, people! I'm very happy to hear that the NWM will be released, in the end! I'll look forward to new updates and news, and of course, your tutorial. Thank you again, to Tarkus, and to the whole modding team, for making better this game.

I LOVE that 6 lane boulevard! I've been wanting those forever!! could you make one with a median though? look at Plano, Texas for some ideas. plano's roads have got to be some of the best in the country. you know what else might be useful? A SuperStreet! Look at US-90a in Houston for that.

    wider one-ways...

tarkus, the proposal looks fantastic, though i'd like to see parking, if at all possible. pegasus made 3 alleyways that are basically transit enabled lots that function like streets (allowing all traffic types) with parking to assist mass transit. however, i would like to mention that the adjacent lot cannot empty out onto the alleway, and thus, in that respect, they are like highways. such a "boulevard" would be fantastic.
