here goes another example for the anti-grid. the city is far from finished so don't complain about some unaestheticities. 3.gif

The hardest part about non-grid cities is the traffic. Connecting one ity-bitty, out-of-the-way street to another street totally off your main strip will suddenly cause a total traffic flow redirection. And its even more difficult to update your transit systems later on.

That said, I try to only grid certain sections of a city (higher density commercial, for instance), but if I do mainly grid cities, I try to create grid variants. I will build one grid, then 5 others elsewhere in the town. They don't align... and therein lies the fun. Keeps a simple grid, but causes a lot of nice variation to get the grids to sync up properly.

That messy traffic-flow problem is part of the "fun," however. I like working from a small-scale, non-grid pattern to begin with, looking ahead to a time in my cities' histories when I will have to make some hard choices about road-widening, traffic-flow, and neighbourhood and heritage preservation.

Sometimes, it gets a little too real as a result!

    And now for some suburbs...

A somewhat newer suburb (well, at least compared to the two pictures above.  As you can see, this one actually has diagonal streets 2.gif):

And a future development on a hillside of a different region:

Of course, I've shown all these pictures before...

masochist: Those are some nice pictures.. the third one is my favorite. The first two have too many roads in them.. and not enough houses and trees. That hillside looks challenging..good luck! 4.gif

Nice one david1314! But how did you manage those diagonal road "bridges"? Have you done that with NAM Puzzle-Pieces? Regards

From my cj, Vandals Fjella, yes i know.. the parts further along the top is very griddy, but that is the planned part of the city, reaching up to the royal palace.

david, that canal city is amazing. Your definitely should turn it into a CJ. If we all could create cities like that, there'd be no need for an SC5!

wow guys! these are amazing. i never really thought about going against the grid. because it makes things harder to build. but i really like the looks of it. i think i'm going to try that.

    Very cool pics everyone!

I can't show any pics right now since I don't want to go to the trouble to upload them. I also don't have many cities that veer away from the grid. I think that if a grid is used the right way it makes sense. I like creating US-style sprawling suburban cities (mainly because I moved to America and was interested in how they design the grids. It's a nice change of pace). The main reason I stick to the grid though is that I kinda suck at building non-gridded cities. They look too awkward.
