I'm sick of hearing about the iPhone... lol. Today it was like all they were talking about on the news. What is the big deal about it... Havent they made phones with internet and music capabilities before? (I really dont know much about this as I just got one [a cell] myself...that and... I'm a blonde! 3.gif )

well...it really does sound sweet though....but like sunil said... a tad expensive.

edit:  i take back what i said.  i have read more... Apparently it will... " 'reinvent' wireless communications"... lol

I am a Greenpeace activist so i have many doubts about the iPhone i know many of you probably love your apple products so do i but i wish they were more

environmentally friendly at the moment most apple products contain hazardous chemicals like toxic flame retardants and polyvinyl chloride and when the factories dispose of these products kids in countries such as india and china dismantle them for parts making them poisoned by the chemicals contained within the product, most competitive electronic companies are stating they are going to be PVC free but apple has not. So at the moment im helping Greenpeace fight a campaign against apple to try and make there products PVC free.I hope apple have changed their idea with the iFone to make it PVC free

then i might consider buying one.

Won't the screen sratch extreamly easily? Oh and... Apple may have it's share of problems this year. Remember the days of the Microsoft Anti-Trust monopoly battles with the Federal government, which granted Microsoft general immunity to certian monopoly laws. Because it is deemed as a great threat to the economy to split of the company that is The Microsoft Corperation, controling 97% of the world computer market (cash registers to phones to desktops and government to litterly anything dealing with computers).

From Paul Thurott

"Apple Faces Federal Monopoly Suit"

Apple Computer finally knows what it's like to be Microsoft: a company that thoroughly dominates a market, shutting out its competition through artificial links between its products. Unfortunately, with that kind of success comes increased scrutiny, and thanks to a recent federal ruling, Apple is about to find itself in court facing illegal monopoly charges.

An intensely private company, Apple currently faces several lawsuits, most of which are in the process of obtaining class-action status. But only one lawsuit has the potential to harm the company in a manner similar to Microsoft's epic federal antitrust battle. Last July, a class-action lawsuit alleged that Apple's decision to tie music sold from its iTunes Store to its dominant iPod device was illegal, threatened competition, and harmed consumers.

In fact, the charges specifically refer to the Sherman Antitrust Act, which played a prominent role in Microsoft's United States antitrust trial, and allege that Apple has unlawfully tied and bundled products, obtained and maintained a monopoly, and attempted to extend that monopoly into new markets. The charges also extend to various state antitrust laws, such as California's Cartwright Act.

Apple sought to have the suit thrown out. But in a December 20, 2006, ruling, US District Judge James Ware denied Apple's request, letting the lawsuit go forward. "Apple has presented no reason for the Court to dismiss the Cartwright Act claim or the common law monopolization claim while allowing Plaintiff's federal antitrust claims," the court order reads. "The Court denies Apple's Motion to Dismiss Plaintiff's anti-trust claims."

The plaintiff's complaint presents a stark look at Apple's strategies in the digital media market. "Apple deliberately makes digital music purchased at [the iTunes Store] inoperable with its competitors' digital music players," the complaint reads. "In order to play music from [the iTunes Store] on a digital music player, then, a consumer's only option is the iPod. Apple sells the iPod at prices far exceeding those that would prevail in a competitive marketplace. Apple also makes the iPod unable to play music sold at its competitors' online music stores. In order to purchase Online Music to play on an iPod, then, a consumer's only option is [the iTunes Store]."

The plaintiffs also highlight a dirty secret about the iPod that hasn't gotten much press outside of WinInfo: The underlying iPod hardware, which PortalPlayer manufactures, natively supports Microsoft's Windows Media Audio (WMA) format, making the iPod compatible with most competing online music services. But Apple shuts this compatibility feature off in the iPod with what Ware calls "crippleware." The order also notes that Apple is using the same strategy to shut out competition in the nascent video-download market.

According to Judge Ware, the plaintiffs in the case were able to make "sufficient" cause for their tying and bundling claims. Regarding the monopoly charge, the judge did note that Apple has a "qualified right" to refuse to deal with competitors such as Microsoft. However, if that behavior "adversely affects" consumers, the defendant must justify its behavior. "Accordingly, the Court finds that Plaintiff has adequately alleged that Apple violated Section 2 of the Sherman Act," the order reads. Judge Ware also found that the plaintiffs' argument for attempted monopolization was valid.

The big question, of course, is whether the plaintiffs in this complaint can succeed in court. Currently, Apple controls about 83 percent of the online music market, 75 percent of the online video market, more than 90 percent of the hard drive-based MP3 player market, and more than 70 percent of the flash memory-based MP3 player market. Those are heady numbers, similar to those Microsoft enjoys in the OS market. And certainly, Apple has actively worked to ensure that its products work only with each other and not with competing solutions. Is that illegal? We might just get the chance to find out.

I know the iPhone looks "cool" (legal action pending, Linksys already owns a trademark on that name, oops.). But how many phones are out there that do everything that does, even more too, for much less? Additonaly that new Apple TV thing announced today... umm it doesn't play TV (cable ect... no tuner) also Jobs called it "revolutionary", things such as TiVo come to mind, and even more realivent, the Media Center System from Microsoft that has been able to do that exact same thing and play TV, by drawing from a MCE computer with a Media Center Extender or Xbox 360 which now also supports IPTV.

Please also remember the FCC delay on phones in the United States 15.gif none of the phones at CES or the "iPhone" will sell in the US till Q3-Q4 2007 sadly 15.gif I want the LG Shine 3.gif.

Standby.

That's not new either...my Sony Ericsson has a 512MB MP3 Walkman built in.

As for the Apple Antitrust suit...what a crock!  Ipods can play ANY mp3, not just files from Itunes.  And think about it, if Apple spent a fortune developing the technology and the integration for itunes and the itunes store, which started off as a service for it's own player software but because of the popularity of Ipod has become a massive success, why should they not protect their investment?  That's what patents and copyright is all about.  It's not as if it's the only store in town..Napster and MSN also have downloadable music stores.

The chosen file format for itunes is AAC, mainly because of encryption methods which mean that the files cannot be distributed freely across the Net, so they are protecting artists' copyright.  Just because others cannot or will not use that file format is not a case for antitrust..This, like the Nintendo Wii nonsense, is just another example of others wanting to exploit these new and mostly untested laws for their own ends.

My phone (Nokia 6230i) plays MP3s and other music files, has internet access, plays and records videos and is probably a lot easier to use then this thing; and it's nothing special (and was a lot less expensive then this thing's gonna be).

PLUS, this thing's gonna sratch very easily.

Saying that, I wouldn't turn down a free one or anything...  3.gif

Me neither, but that would be the only way I would ever get one. Spend $600 on a mobile phone, plus the monthly costs, are you nuts? I wouldn't dish out that kind of cash for a phone even if it came with a hooker who could bake cakes and do my laundry.22.gif

It looks sweet though. Not all iPod-white and uglified.

Well, I've got a dilemma. I've fed into the craze of Iphone and Ipod touch, and my parents have decided they will get either one for me for my birthday on Thrusday.

Now, There are a few breaking points that I'm not sure about. I have service with ATT that includes the Internet and unlimited texting and all that jazz, if I get an Iphone, I can keep it, correct? I also have a smartphone data plan thing aswell, and the site says that Iphone data plan will replace this, so can I avoid the 20 dollars that you would have to pay for this feature? Can Iphone users explain and clear my confusion?

Also, I plan on taking my Iphone or Ipod touch out of the country, and my friend said he got charged 1200 dollars for using his ATT internet in Canada. Can you activate when you want it to use Wifi or the ATT internet? I'm not even sure how much it costs to use ATT internet in Argentina, lol. I know you don't have to pay for internet on the Ipod Touch.

Basically, what do you guys think? Ipod touch or Iphone? I have a Blackjack 2 and it works fine, my brother said that I should get an Iphone because it's better than having two devices with me, but I think he just wants my Blackjack 2 3.gif

    EDIT: Sorry for the bump.

I would go with iTouch. I love my phone and went for that as well.

You will be charged an absolute fortune in international roaming.....keep your current phone and get iTouch. I'm very pleased I made that decision.

A few friends of mine have an ipod touch and think it's awesome (so do I; hope I'm not turning green with envy over here 3.gif). Anyhow, if you're getting charged THAT MUCH for international roaming, I'd say get the ipod touch. From what I've heard, the iphone didn't really didn't live up to it's hype, but the ipod touch sure is. In fact, I'm probably going to save for one when I get my first job soon.

    -Yoshi

PS: Your brother probably does just want your Blackjack, I would keep it just to annoy him 3.gif

Bah, Iphone lives up to the hype.

And belfastuniguy, your probably care alot more about international roaming due to the fact that people travel between countries in Europe more, while most people don't leave the US that often. Plus there is always the international plan 3.gif

Probably that's why Americans are a bit more baffled when they pick up the bill after one of those rare trips abroad.

I'd probably need to see the doctor if I was taking the Internet everywhere I went...

Although... I guess if you start shunning technology now your going to be totally lost in 20 years time. The amount of 40+ year olds I see taking classes on how to use Computers is unreal... I keep dreading that I may be assimilated by their kind 14.gif

Maybe i'll pick something up when Technology is that little bit cheaper... and not made by Apple.

It depends. I've heard that the music space on the iPhone is really small, how small is it? How does the physical shape of the iPhone compare to the iPod touch, are they the same? I have a 16 GB iPod touch, and it is amazing. I am a very careless person and i've left my iPod in my pocket with keys scratching at the screen. When i took it out, there was no scratches. And i have dropped it atleast over 5 times and still no dents. If the iPhone matches up to the standard of the iPod touch, i think apple buyers will be pleasently surprised!

Ahh, if only I could just leave it at that...but I can't.  Personally, the iTouch doesn't have enough space for me.  When they make a 60+ GB version, I might look into it.  For your dilema, however, it's preferable over the iPhone, especially since you already have a nice phone to begin with.
