A few days later, a land expedition was sent from Fairbanks to take a look at what had happened, with a severe storm with extensive cloud cover raging in the Bering Sea. The following is a summary of what they saw.
§         Tsunami damage was visible everywhere along the coast.
§         Nome still existed, but barely, and is probably the only surviving American settlement along Norton Sound.
§         Several volcanoes’ eruptions were felt (during the expedition) from the direction of the Aleutian Islands.
§         A warm ocean current was found to be flowing north not far from the coast.
§         A rough estimate of 800 square miles of land was newly discovered approximately 150 miles northwest of Bethel.
The government, aware that the ensuing economic depression would not contribute to the recession these several years, proposed a huge project. It was called:

    UPDATE ONE
    shagrinle1.jpg
A team of explorers were set out to survey the area, and coupled with LANDSAT; they were able to make a 3D topographic “sc4region” render of the area named Shagrin.

    The first ships:

Lots of yada-yada-yada and several months later, Shagrin was on its way to becoming a metropolis.
    City Highlights so far:

UPDATE ONE POINT SEVEN FIVE (individual replies will be to the end of updates/teasers from now on)
    shagrinle1.jpg
WASHINGTON DC- It was discovered that, up to this point, Shagrin’s commercial development was all sponsored to the government’s fishy “super demand act”, and not only that, the government was spending hundreds of billions of tax dollars on it. The president made a short apology and the super demand act was no more.
Thus, the impact on Shagrin was great:
    simcityimg0029vb6.jpg
    Before, and
    simcityimg0030dd5.jpg
After (with the mayor’s electronic planner). Less repetition! Skyscrapers stand out!4.gif The demand isn’t too low providing suburbs are virtually nonexistent!3.gif But still a long way from a metropolis3.gif

Anyhow, Shagrin is currently working on America’s first serious high speed rail system attempt.
    simcityimg0031hu1.jpg
And the Shagrin/West Alaska International Airport:
    simcityimg0032il9.jpg
The runways are mostly complete, but
    simcityimg0033lm5.jpg
    Developers are stumped. Someone help!3.gif

Last but (hopefully) not least, a nite shot:
    simcityimg0034yv3.jpg
    Thanks!

I'll be looking forward to see more of the city!

My own airport, Sokhumi International (rwy 2400 m, read more about how I lay out airports below)

    SIA

But about the airport: Never forget that they eat space! Not just the runway length, but terminals, maintenance, hangars and so on needs huge amount of free space. I myself shortens the runway length when I make airports (pretending the tiles are 24x24 m. instead of 16x16 m.). You must first decide between a major interational airport (rwy 3000+; B747, B777, A340), airport serving mainline aircrafts (rwy ca. 2000 m; B737, A320, MD-80) or regional airport (rwy ca. 1000 m takes Dash 8-Q300 and smaller, rwy 1500 m. takes Dash 8-Q400, BAe 146-200/Avro RJ85 [the regional jet in SC], A318).

You seem to have settled on the regional airport with long runways; see the map of London City Airport for how to build an airport in a crowded location. You can also read about what types of aircrafts that are allowed at LCY.
