CigarCityProject.jpg

Little Chicago, The Cigar City, are just two nicknames given to the city of Tampa. The city of Tampa has one of the most busiest ports in the U.S and one of the largest aswell. It also has some of the most diverse architecture, modern, neoclassism, moorish, latin, you name it, you could probibly find it. With this series of buildings I will be doing the sky scrapers of Downtown, Hyde Park, and Channelside, the University of Tampa, the Cigar Factories, the old Victorian/Colonial homes of Temple Terrace, Seminol Hights, Tampa Heights, Hyde Park and SoHo, the Latin Quarter restaurants and clubs and many more buildings from Tampa.

Here is a list of buildings I will B.A.T or try to

No problem 1.gif

What you'll want to do now, is take the pink, and move it back just far enough so that it doesn't cover up the red columns.  The pink is the area that seperates the windows, so the ledge part will be a brown window ledge eventually, and the other pink part will be more brick wall.  Right now, you have the pink parts situated like they're a cornice, which they're not (the building didn't have one, did it?).

Anyway, yes, off to a good start.

Nice to see you picking up batting. It looks like a promising start. We can always use more main street bats.

    Glenni: Thanks!

JB: Thanks, you're definatly one of my heroes with this GMAX contraption lol.

Jason: Thanks for everything, with out you I would be no where lol!

spa: Yeah, I'm going to do every building in downtown Tampa and a few that have been demolished, as well as a few from Ybor City, Channelside, and Hyde Park, you prolly don't know where those are but they have interesting architecture. Ybor City will be the best because those are all 2-4 Story Latin buidlings. Ybor City is where most of the historic buildings are in Tampa. There's a restaurant called La Columbia that's been there since the 1880's, which makes it the oldest in Tampa.

    Irfox: Thanks 4.gif

Ok so with the aid of Jason again, I added the windows and fixed up some stuff I had wrong here's progress from today!

    wce5.jpg

So Now the next step is to start on the bottom floor then move to the otherside of the building and then I dunno! lol. Thanks for all the comments they mean a lot.

I did some of the bottom floor all that is left is to add the over hangs and finish the top part and I'm through with that side. I did all of that by myself! YES! I think I got it!

    Thanks jackie!

Rochefort: Thanks man, you're comment means a lot lol!

OK, so this morning I started work on the Madison St. side, I'm working from the ground up on this one because my pictures for this side aren't very good so I'm having to guess on measurements. But it'll work out because I don't really want an exact copy, I want a bit of a mixture of my own ideas with it.

    wce7.jpg

I also changed the size of the font and changed the name of the building to fit the series of B.A.Ts I'm making so now, this is the CIGAR CITY EATERY. 4.gif

    This should be legible ingame,

    Comments are greatly appreciated.

hm... is it just me... ?:-

Or is it actually the case.. building on enders doesn't seem to look anything like building on the picture...

But anyway... about doing the restaurant's name - you would be much better off by not bating it - it doesn't look too good now and wouldn't really improve in hight quality render either. Just make a texture with the name it will look much better in the end.

SimFox: That's because I am showing the block not the actual building, the "Cigar City Eatery" side isn't shown, and the way the architect did this building was weird, it's like 2 differnt buildings combined, you can clearly tell if you look at it (the far building) that there are 2 different brick colors used in the building. Thanks for the comment and the advice on the Cigar City Part 4.gif

    This is the building

    1r.jpg

Here is an update on Cigar City.

    wce8s.jpg

    wce8w.jpg

Since I don't know what to do next I started the other building, which is also a restaurant, but I forgot its name, anyways here's what I've done so far.

    am1.jpg

This will also be a 2x2 Corner w2w building this is the close building in the first image I posted up on my first post.

Wow! Very promising start, josefmayor! I'm glad to see you've picked up the BAT, and with Jason's help I know you'll come up with something great! I wouldn't have a single BAT on the STEX if it wasn't for his help.

Regarding the sign: I have to agree with SimFox. I have used the Text tool in gmax to make signs before, but unless the sign on your building really is supposed to have 3-d text, it is probably best to just use a texture. I also think textured writing tends to show up better in render.

That said, I can't wait to see more! We need more w2w in the game, and especially corner lots, so this is great.

EDIT: You just posted your update as I was posting my comment! Now I can see that the Cigar City sign is actually a little 3-d, but I'd bet a texture would still work out better in this instance. Or extrude the text less in gmax. =)

gerAndi: Thanks 4.gif, I am going to finish that building quite soon I'm just waiting for jason to help me do the cornice and a few other things.

Ok Last update for today. I worked a little more on the new building and finished up the walls so now I just gotta do the other sides (which will be blank or have murals) and then add the floors.

I'm done with the new building except for texturing and the little overhang thingies, but I was curious as to what you guys think I should put for the mural on the wall.

It's always interesting to see how cities change.  The differences are always amazing.  They're like two different places.  The people of then wouldn't even recognise the city of today.

Your BAT is coming along well.  I'd just watch out about how exagerated you make things.  Those columns might stick out too much.

Also, even though the real buildings have no window frames, looking at this new building, it really looks unfinished without them.  I'd add them in anyway, if you weren't already planning on it.  Do what I told you before.  Make the rectangle spline, clone it, make it smaller, and then attach it.  But after you attach it, you'll select the top two lines (go to the same menu area you use to select by vertex) and delete them.  then make some arches, put those in, and then attach and weld those.

And for both buildings you still need to model the window frames on the first floor.

Both are coming along well, and will make fine additions to SC4. 1.gif

    very cool progress

    but I share Jasoncw's opinion

a few more details really would suit.

but the model is really cool that far!

    looks much better now ^^

    btw

I live sometimes here and sometimes there...

Means my mother has got a house in the suburbian area of Berlin. the town is called "Falkensee".

My father has got a flat in the center of Berlin.

It brings lots of advantages ^^

You have the possibilities of the big city but also the advantages of the suburbian area with lot's of green stuff like trees or forests..

btw where excactly will you be when you're over here?!?

I'm having a hard time texturing because I can't find the right color brick on that one building so I'm going to finish up the first one and then try again with texturing!

As for future updates, I'm not quite ready to start the Kress building, Floridian Hotel or the Tampa Theater yet so my next buildings will be some Cigar Factories from West Tampa and Ybor, so when these are done and put on stex I will start them!

BTW Tommorrow I am 18 years old!!!!!!!!

That looks really good! Not even textured yet and it's showing some decent detail. BTW, I have a relatively large texture archive on my computer, it's about 123mb in size and just a little bit over 1000 textures. Would you be interested in having all of these texture for use? I can upload on rapidshare or something. 2.gif

    the texture doesn't look bad.

which texture did you have in mind ? a texture that is darker or brighter ? one with a clearlier stone texture ?!

    maybe this one fits

it's taken from a texture pack which you can download at the stex

Thanks gerAndi and DragonAnime your textures are working great.

Well its back to school now and I've got a lot of tough classes to work on in my final semester of H.S before College. Quite honestly its pointless to be doing this because my gpa is frozen and I've already been accepted, but I'm not cool with seeing my grades low so, yeah.

Updates will be low, but I'm going to be doing a few old houses, a couple of cigar factories, and a lot of the buildings in the Historic Ybor City district, which is the Latin Quarter of Tampa.

Anyways! See ya in the next update!

Ok So I'm just not happy with the way texturing is going and I'm thinking about just letting somone else do it, but in the mean time I'm working on a 1x1 housing block, I've finished the first 1/2 of it and this house looks really good so far but I'm running into a problem with the roof! I don't know how to do it! lol anyways here's what it looks like:

    22ndhouse1.jpg

    22ndhouse1a.jpg

That's all for now, any help on making textures or trying to make them look good in game would be appreciated
