-What distro are u using

-How long have you been using it

-Do you like it better than MS (obvious)

-Have you modded the source code

-What kinda machiene do u run it on

Horray for all MS haters!  Love linux fo eva.

Well, I'm not a Linux user, but I'll be happy to hate MS with y'all.  3.gif

I have been experimenting in installing Linux into my G4 PPC.  I haven't had much luck with it yet though.

Great operating system. When I figure out the right version, I'm sure to try it out.

Our computer has too many important files to even try something like that. I know it's not risky but, well, everything turns out to be a problem on this Computer!

Okay guys I think I'm going to jump in and and partition my half filled 60 GB HD and go for a dual boot system

Im thinking Fedora Core or Debian....decisions, decisions..

Anyways, whats the best free partition manager out there? I'll back up anyways, but Id rather I keep my current data intact on my HD

Debian FTW...fedora core is just plain stupid...it's been a while but fedora "doesn't like my sound card because it's proprietary" while all other distros have the sound card drivers for it.

I don't know of any good free partition managers but partition magic is really good.

hamsterTK: I'd Assume that both those Linux Distros have Partitioning software with them...all the Ubuntu Distros seem to have partitioning software in the installer...though you might want to check to be sure...it could just be a Ubuntu Thing...

I use Xubuntu 6.06...it's pretty good...It makes the computer usable at least...but it lacks applications and...quote honestly...it reminds me of what it's like getting windows XP on a brand new PC...only no trail software or useless crap from AOL...

Another thing that baffles me about Xubuntu is it occasionaly has issues with Extract or using tar files...and it doesn't know how to handle a bin file for some reason.

but other than that, it makes a really old PC...usable again(which is what I wanted to do in the first place)

I'm not a linux user at the moment, I'm very tempted to install Ubuntu.... but the fact that iTunes doesn't run on Linux stops me.

Hi,

Well I have mostly been using either Ubuntu, or SUSE. I am formatting my laptop now, to install openSUSE, see how that works out...

Other distros I have used before are; MEPIS, Fedora, Mandriva, Debian and have tested Linspire (new WinLin).

edit: If people are interested in Linux. but want to see how it works and how that specific OS distro works and looks, go to OSDIR.com they have a huge screenshot archive were they test lots of distros.

OSDir.com/Screeshots

take care,

why don't you use apt-get Ubuntu is derived from Debian and Xubuntu is derived from Ubuntu.

Apt-get blah blah

install install install

DONE!

no messing with tarballs or whatever the crap with compiling or doing whatever.

A 10 year Veteran of Linux here, up to almost Guru status, I run Zenwalk Linux (Based on Slackware), Have run nothing else at home on the family PC since 1999.

Play SimCity4 over Cedega, with the 5.0.3 engine, just wondering if anyone else here uses Cedega to play it?

The Latest engine, version 6.0, doesn't like Simcity 4.

Also, I am looking for city files to play around with, anyone suggest where I can find a good selection of actual cities to download?

iTunes will run on Linux, over wine. also, an ITunes like interface is the Amarok media player, ver good. It will talk to your iPod.

im running Xubuntu 6.10 on my webserver, was gonna just run a ubuntu server install, but i didnt know how to set up apache and an FTP, so i had to install a GUI, the computer is a PII 450mhz with 384mb ram, so it dosnt really like GUI's, Xubuntu runs slow, but fine, Ubuntu was real slow. Thats my first Linux Machine though, used to have a MacOSX computer before aswell, but it burnt out 2003 or something like that.

My main computer runs Windows XP, heavily modified though, only real reason i use it is because im familiar with the system and know how to fix most of the errors, and it runs all my games troubleless.

use Fluxbox as a faster GUI....Gnome and KDE and those big GUIs are the problem.

Linux looks pretty nice, I'll probably try it out when I get a new decent computer that I can actually mess around with in BIOS... Hp computers suck.

So what are the advantages of linux over windows?

Goldfish, biggest ones i guess are:

#Open Source, you can change what you want, fix errors and its free. you can spend your money on beer instead of on windows so that gates can continues to wash his car with Don Pergon 53.

#Becase of the coustimazation and hundreds of different distros, Linux is virtually free from Viruses

#Death to corporate greed

#its made by users, for users, theres atleast one distro to fit every persons needs.
