Remembrance Day, 2006

In Canada, it is called Remembrance Day. In the States, it is called Veteran's Day. No matter what name is given to it, it still means the same.

Today is a day set aside to remember those who fought in war in far away countries, against dangerous enemies, so that we today can be free to have all of the choices we deserve.

It is for those men and women who died in the name of freedom, who died so we could fly our flag, that we have to give a moment of our time for today. Those people, who bravely fought for what they thought was right.

We wear a poppy for them, the poppies that grew with abundance in the lime of the shells in the fields at Flanders. The fields at which many of our fathers and thier fathers before them, and our mothers and the mothers before them, died for a brighter future.

I ask of you to take a moment of your time on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month, November 11th, to remember.

To remember the brave souls that fought for us, so that they will never be forgotten.

1918 In the 11th month on the 11th day at the 11th hour the guns fell silent and so ended the Great War (aka WWI) Lest we forget the sacrifice of those who gave up their lives and sacrificed their youth for others

well I'm no poet so i I use the words of a real one:

In Flanders Fields the poppies blow

Between the crosses row on row,

That mark our places; and in the sky

The larks, still bravely sing, fly

Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago

We lived,felt dawn,saw sunset glow,

Loved and were loved, and now we lie

  In Flanders Fields

Take up our quarrel with the foe:

To you from failing hands we throw

The torch; be yours to hold it high.

If ye break faith with us who die

We shall not sleep, though poppies grow

    In Flanders fields.

Lt. Col John McCrae Canadian Army MD (1872-1918)

To all whom sacrificed, all I can say is thank you

please take a moment to honour their memories

ps don't disrepect or dishonour their sacrifice by making this a thread about your views for or against this war, that war, or any other war, it's meant to remeber the individuals whom died in such conflicts, not the political chaos that created such wars!

A very happy Veteran's Day (Remembrance Day) to you all. In the middle of your weekend, be it extra long or not, spare a thought to those men who survived the wars past; all they've been through to preserve freedom in this world.

Veteran's Day falls on the day of the Armistice of World War One: the eleventh hour in the eleventh day in the eleventh month. Remember those who survived, and pray we never have to experience one ourselves.

Administrative note:  two different threads on this topic have been combined here.

Personal note:  Thank you to all of the veterans who have fought for peace and freedom.

We can inspire others through witness so that one grows together in communicating. But the worst thing of all is religious proselytism, which paralyzes: “I am talking with you in order to persuade you.” No. Each person dialogues, starting with his and her own identity. The church grows by attraction, not proselytizing.    - Pope Francis

To all those veterans who are still with us - thank you for your service to this county!  Words don't express the gratitude we owe you.

Never forget the brave men and women who paid the ultimate price for our freedom.

On this remembrance day I thank all those that helped give us the freedom we have today, including all those that sacrificed their lives in World War One, World War Two, Korean War, Vietnam War, Falklands War, Gulf War One and also Gulf War Two.

It happens to my birthday on the same day as this.

By the way, it doesn't have to be all-Christian when it comes to Armistice day.

No one will be forgotten, no matter what religion they believe in.

I agree with Constantina, may we remember all who have lost their lives at war.

On October 24, 1795, Poland was partitioned between Prussia, Russia and Habsburg Austria. Two insurrections started in 1831 and 1864, but both failed. Eventually, the WWI was an opportunity for Poland to return on European maps.

With the end of WWI on 11th November, 1918, Poland became independent country after 123 years of official non-existence. Now, we, Poles celebrate the Independence Day on 11th November.

Same as Constantina, this day is also my birthday 2.gif

No one is saying that.  This is the day for remembering all people who have served their country to defend it.

Well, some people are especially insecure when it comes to things like that.

But yeah, NEVER forget, and NEVER dishonor those who have served and or died for us.

Seems that Veteran's Day has more meaning than in recent history during this time of war and terrorism. Our armed forces deserve recognition for all their hard work over the centuries.

I give honours to those who served on both sides of the war, all who died for their countries and a special honour from me to the British soldiers who defended my country in some of its darkest hours.

Also happy birthday to those also 4.gif

Not only is this an important day to me because I am a veteran, but it is also my birthday.  Thanks to all of you who have expressed appreciation for the efforts and sacrifices of veterans.  And thanks to those of you who wish us a happy birthday too.

We present you this flag, on behalf of the president of the United States, and a grateful nation...

Remember all who give up their lives, who made the ultimate sacrifice, so that others might have freedom...
