Ccecill    Hi! Thanks for coming by - this is my "coming attractions" Broadway style theatre poster for Atkinos. Glad you like it!

Cowcorn     Thanks for coming by again. Glad you liked the literature selection. There are a few other books I noticed increasing in popularity recently: William Simspeare Presents Hamlet - The Little Ham Sandwich With a Big Heart, Frodo Kitten's Lord of the Strings trilogy, Mission Impossible 4: Make Cats Listen, and who could forget the timeless classic Nancy Drew and the Case of the Disappearing Simtropolis Connection. Be sure to check your local library for all of the hottest titles!

Archangel9      Aww, shucks! Now you're embarrassing me! I am glad that you like the CJ and I am obeying your command and preparing updates for upload in the near future!

Fallon144     Thanks - I am glad you like it. I hope you enjoy it from your end as much as I do making it on my end!

Jacqulina         Thanks for stopping by again! New stuff is coming soon!

Petriknl       Thanks! I enjoy the Roman buildings too. I am going to have to not move too fast in time so I can have more places with them.

football_fever       It will be revealed soon! Glad you like the teaser building.

sc4portugal         Thanks! I can get you a great price for a subscription!

RushHourFreak         Thanks! Glad you like the paper. I used power point for it since I don't have anything else that will do stuff (other than cropping). PP is not the greatest, but it gets the job done.

    Atkinos: Twin Cities, Part 1

Admiral Hestorb, famous circumnavigator of Schulmanicus, did not sit idly by as Captain Cawale explored the Atkinos Islands. Hestorb explored Atkinos Island and set up a small base of operations. Soon, Captain Splunt arrived on the western shore of Atkinos. Two separate settlements sprang up on the island, creating an unusual circumstance: two towns on one small island. Hestorb began a settlement on the northeastern coast which developed into the village of Atkiniros. Splunt's settlement became the town of Atkinos. Both grew rapidly, meeting at the shared aqueduct line. Though abutting one another, the two towns each have their own town center and their own culture. Atkiniros is a smaller village with small farms around its perimeter, Atkinos is more cosmopolitan and features a town marketplace as well as a civic plaza. Both towns make heavy use of the Island Style of architecture, seen on Gran Maru as well, thanks to the abundant red clay found on the island. But, civic and commercial structures were constructed in a less formal style than the Temple Style so evident on Gran Maru. This new style, which used brighter colors and simpler wall decoration, became known as Island Formal (to non-Sims, it is Spanish-Mediterranean). Characteristics include red tile roofs and a general lack of columns seen in Temple Style buildings, though some will have contrastingly painted half columns as decoration. Typical colors for painting Island Formal structures include yellow, white, and orange. Red and green were less popular colors.

Let's examine the handiwork of Admiral Hestorb, the village of Atkiniros, as our first stop on our tour of Atkinos Island.

    hestorbul2.jpg

Admiral Hester B. Hestorb, the highest ranking officer in the First Fleet, seen posing on the prow of her flagship, The S. S. Pounce.

We will begin our tour with wide views of the village, then look at specific areas.

    atkinirosview1oc1.jpg

In this north to south view, the town plaza is in the center and farms are to the north and east of the built up part of town. Villa Vols is the large farm to the south.

    atkinirosview2ws4.jpg

In this south to north view, the northeastern corner of the island is to the left and the shared aqueduct system is to the right.

Our tour begins at the town plaza, the heart of Atkiniros. The plaza centers on the First Schulminion Church of Atkiniros. Its bell tower is the best-known and most widely admired symbol in town. Around the plaza are the town hall, market place, and Community Education Center, where Atkinirans of all ages go to learn reading, writing, math and science, and all the latest news.

    plazachurchbr4.jpg

The church sits in the center of the plaza. The bell tower, besides being a great icon for the town's tourist bureau, serves as the permanent site for the annual Atkiniros Paper Airplane Flight Festival. Sixth grade student Leonardo Da Pinchy, who was often in trouble for pinching his classmates, won the inaugural flight contest. He was quoted in the newspaper as saying "These are cool. Someone should make one big enough for people to fly in".

    plazawideviewxw8.jpg

A wider view of the town square. The market is see above the church and town hall below and to the right. The two streets running across the screen from left to right are part of Atkiniros Circle. Atkiniros Cirle East is below the church and Atkiniros Circle West is above. They converge and form a "U" shape around the town. The cross streets of the plaza are Via Mare (Sea Street) which is to the right, running by town hall. Via Rodulfo runs parallel to Via Mare, by the Community Education Center and the Bureau of Feline Affairs.

    plazawideview2dw7.jpg

A different angle of the main square. Running top to bottom are the two legs of Atkiniros Circle (east left and west right in this image). In the block bounded by The Circle and Vias Mare and Schulmanista (the lowest left to right street in the image) sits one of several dense commercial and residential blocks. Quaint cafes abound around the plaza. Favorites include Baby Birdy's House o' Wings, Bacon R Us, Pac Man's Buffet, and The Chocoteria. For those with big budgets, exclusive destinations include The Golden Monkey and Clifford's Big Red Restaurant.

    atkinirosview3hb3.jpg

This wide view shows the cultivated areas around the developed core of Atkiniros. The first census reported 2,788 inhabitants in the little village.

    plazabelltowermz1.jpg

The iconic bell tower can be seen by ships approaching the coast as well as from Atkinos. Years from now, when hordes of tourists flock to the little village to soak up the delightful ambience, many residents will make quite a profit selling t-shirts with the tower's image and from little porcelain bell towers for visitors to take home and admire (and dust).

    plazamarketne8.jpg

Facing Atkiniros Circle West between vias Rodulfo and Mare is the Central Atkiniros Market. Farmers sell their produce here and folks from all around gather to buy, sell and gossip. Speaking of gossip, did you see that skirt Janet was wearing? Can you believe she left the house with that thing on?!

    plazasouthsidegp4.jpg

This view of the plaza, along Via Rodulfo, highlights to important structures. The building behind the church on the right is the Community Education Center. Next to it is the Atkiniros branch office of the Bureau of Feline Affairs. Admiral Hestorb's personal friend (or, should I say "purr-sonal friend") E. V. Shelby was appointed the Feline-in-Chief.

    townhallau5.jpg

Atkiniros Town Hall is adjacent to the town square. It sits on a small hill and its grounds are mostly woods. There is a statue of Admiral Hestorb on the grounds as a tribute to the town's founder.

    admiralhestorbko7.jpg

Admiral Hestorb's statue overlooks East Drive. Her famous words are carved into the base of the statue: "Feed me now. Feed me later. And brush me. Then, I shall lead you to victory."

    bureaufelineaffairsbn6.jpg

A different angle, highlighting the Bureau of Feline Affairs. Exclusive shopping is nearby, including 3 gourmet catnip shops.

    viarudolfoni6.jpg

A view down Via Rodulfo, a street named after one of the Atkinirans more favorite people. Mixed use zoning allows for commerce and residential in the same space- stores at street level and residences above. The brick building on the right is Inquisitive Jorg's Simian Training Center.

    viarudolfoplazaxy3.jpg

This combination of Island and Island Formal buildings gives Atkiniros a distinctive character.

    commercial1rs8.jpg

Two fabulous shopping destinations include CAW Jewels & Baubles (center) and Busscastle Direct (left), a chocolate and finery emporium.

In our next segment of the tour, we will explore the residential and agricultural sectors of this quaint village.

yaaay updates! First look at this settlement and im all O_O wow......that must have been a major pain to make, all that farming...did you place roads then let them develop, then pause and plop everything>? Or are the farms plopped? Either way, looks great 4.gif I wish those counted as actual roads eh? That would make cities so much cooler 2.gif

My advice......make some towns go to war..........hehehehehe

Actually, Im rather getting excited to see these towns hit the industrial age, and into like 1800-1950s era styles... that will be cool, but there is NO rush 4.gif taking it slowly is working well for you

    As always, update soon

    Cheers

Wow, great newspaper. Very good style too, in your buildings. I love the mediterranean feel. Too bad there weren't some better historic walking street mods. I'll be here next update!

great update! I love the use of ped mall tiles as streets. And also the mall. As someone that spent a week plopping a beach around the entire island of Key West, I can say that's a good job. Keep it up, bud

Now that is just really really cool. Looking good!

I really love the cathedral in the middle of the town, and the overall look of the town. You've got a talent for capturing an older feel to cities.

Archangel9      Thanks for your comment. I appreciate an enthusiastic reader! We'll have to get something named after you in Schulmania as well. Actually, the farms are about 50% plopped and 50% grown. The roads, if paved, are predone ones. The rest are plopped country roads or pedestrian tiles. As for the war, Schulminions have not yet been involved in conflicts. But, once they discover the outside world, ya never know....

connor_v       Thanks! Glad you like the newspaper. I rather enjoyed writing it! I agree I would like some other historic road mods. The open paved and sandstone are all we have for the moment. And the cobblestone too. Maybe one of the fine designers could whip up a Roman stone road or a wagon trail. That would be cool!

football_fever        Thanks! I did the ped mall for road to avoid car traffic and give it a more historic feel. I did have to concede somewhat to get residential to grow since it requires streets. But, I am still trying the ped mall as much as possible for the time being.

st louis dude        Indeed! Mickebear's Mediterranean lots are the best thing to happen to Euro style (historic that its) lots in a long time. There is such a variety and they are so well done. I am very pleased with them and wish I had more!

Owenluby      Thanks! Glad you like it.

Meinhosen      Thanks! That's exactly the look I was going for. In the next area that gets discovered, I am trying for a slightly different climate and different historic style... TBA!

    That's a fantastic journal !!! I love it...

I can give my piece of advice, tall buildings are seldom that close to crops. You should put some lowrise houses inbetween... That would increase the realism.

All the rest is great anyway ;-)

seemurray2        LOL! Admiral Hestorb has been known to partake of the nip from time to time, but she has always maintained her professionalism.

patriots_1228        Thanks! Glad you like the update . It is hard to pick an exact timeline for things. It is sort of Renaissance. I wanted to have a longer ancient period, but there are not enough ancient buildings to make more than one city - they would all have the same buildings. I'll have some period revivals from time to time to add the Roman elements back in other old towns. The lots are too good to use only once.

Fredval         Thanks for coming back by again. I know that it is quite a juxtaposition having fields right next to built up areas like that. But, I wanted Atkiniros to be very compact. The village only had a tiny bit of land - only the corner of the island. The rest was for the other town. It also gave me a palette to try out some of the ploppable farms and fields to see what I thought of them. So, it turned out somewhat like an urban growth boundary sort of thing, where development of a certain density extends only to a certain point and then abruptly stops. Hard to believe they had zooming back in the Renaissance!

Fallon144       There is a certain lack of industry, but high tech will be a long way off, unless I can find some old looking I-$$$ buildings somewhere. It would be a great thing if one of our talented lot builders could come up with some!

Giligone      It is much smaller than the next one. These two on Atkinos are my tribute to the Spanish-Mediterranean style. I want some places to have a distinctive style. I look later to have other styles highlit in certain cities.

Hi there friend! Thanks for including me (wait, that was me right?) In Schumania as a part of Atkinos, you know I'd love to be a part of this CJ even if it is a naming of a street or a character, just because it is in your CJ, I thank you for that. I loved the update, nice use of the aqueducts and the use of the med residential and other euro BATs make it more Islandish with that Colonized look. Well, I look forward to your next update.

    Take Care,

    Charles
