and i also don't like the "short commute time" requirement for high wealth residents crap... its VERY unrealistic.

is there a mod available on STEX that can override that?

What I really don't like about the game is that it was sold when it wasn't even ready and then not supported and never really updated.

But that's the way it goes nowadays and in the futur. Once you easily made your money with unfinished stuff......run away and start with something else unfinished all over again. Unfortunately this will destroy humanity one day. And that's what I hate....

The strict grid is annoying.. if they made the grid squares 10x smaller, or took away the grid, I'd be happy.

Also, they need to open source it, or throw out an update for better drag and drop systems, along with category builders.

They also need to buy back the rights to Sim City, build a new game that fixes their errors, and they should hire some simtropolisians onto their team (blahdy, ace, voltaire, ect.)

Alright,,,you asked...get ready, I'll be here for a while.

What I hate about SimCity4:

-The cars, trucks, trains, and boats dissapering and appering for no good reason. So when I'm driving my police car around, and then a semi appers out of nowhere in front of me, I go *boom*.

- You can't drive a vehicle onto a Car/Passenger ferry, only the game can.

-No weather. It's never even windy...

- No natural disasters. Where is the fun in controling the disasters ALL the time?

- There's no snow on the mountains! How can anyone go skiing?

- Poor vehicle designs. Unless you you get vehicle mods, your vehicles start looking as ugly as can be a lot sooner then you wish.

- The most annoying thing of all for me is that there is no reason for you to build an army base other than to get a little bit of money every month. I'd love it if it was possible for you to send your tanks and heicopter over the border to take over the neighboring city. And have then put up a fight and try to attack your city as well.

-Lack of a variety of staions, airports, and seaports.

And now I'm done. 3.gif

I can't believe this thread is still going, new games are on there way. With so much user made content how can this game be all that bad.

This is somewhat like the "skyscraper jungle" issue. The zone system is a great thing, but it's impossible to get specialized, realistic cities unless you regulate the zones. For my suburbs, I sometimes go as far as zoning each lot individually.

My main complaint is that city limits are tiny. The game's so-called large city has a smaller land area than a city near my home with a population of less than 10,000. I have to build across 9 tiles just to get a moderately sized city.quote>

well i think with the city limit thing, you gotta remember the specs of the people at the time when this game was released. And there was never the amount of downloadable content that was available today. This game sat on my shelf for years until I picked it up, got rush hour, and started downloading my ass off. But its awesome because this is how the game should have been released. But I do agree that  it is quite small, if you are looking to create a metropolis. I have a dual core and 8800gts now lol, so it would be awesome to see the 2 mil people in my city running in one huge zone. However, it does allow you to save the sectioins individually, which is also something quite nice. I would say the best thing would be to be able to CUSTOMIZE your zone barriers!

SC 4 + CS 1.6 = :]

Stardragon, actually that would be a better title for this thread "Just A Place To Vent When SC4 Gets Annoying". I've spent a moment or two here as well, but in the end we will always get less to expect more. This is how is software companies keep you hooked, and sell games. There's no streight forward answer or solution, because "we" the consumer will always want more from the products we use or enjoy the most, & companies will always give you less than you hoped for or expected. That is business, never give the consumer what they want but what they need but at the same time make them think there getting what they wanted.

I've been expecting the "Gran Turismo" to get better by adding to what they have and they never come through. They always add but they also always take away. They never add by inches but by centimeters, as do most games.

The music doesn't matter considering you can replace all the music with your own! Now that's a sweet feature!!

Uberschall! Crappy music? lol i do not agree. its some pretty damn great music.

As for what I hate really was just limiting us to terraforming the tiles one by one. I know theres user made programs out now but only written for XP. sorry, dont have it. the other things i didnt like ive gotten over.

They mean how your confined to the grid, how you can't build winding streets, realistic curves and such. To break the grid would take an awful lot of programming but i'm certain its doable (somehow... not in SC4 though). I find the grid is helpful, but a chance to break out of it would be genius.

The short commute time. It doesn't make sense.

I can't devise a diagonal bridge to really make the city realistic.

No underwater tunnels.

Bus stops look cheesy. Thank god for simtropolis. and the creators.

I can't connect the one way roads to another region.

These are some of the stuff I hate about SC4.

I have long waited for mods that support  diagonal bridges and underwater tunnels. Also one way roads that will connect to another region.

What I like most about SC4 is the plugins folder. Mine is about 1,2 GB and still growing....

SC4 would have been boring within 6 months without the custom content.

Or is this the wrong thread for this kind of remarks?????

Go: C:\Program Files\Maxis\SimCity 4 Deluxe\Radio\Stations\Mayor\ or Region, then all you do is either delete the music in the folders or keep & place any mp3 (smaller) or wave file. When you open your game open up sounds menu, click custom music (or whatever it says), if you delete any maxis music files they will appear in grey.

Hope that helps.

I said REWARDS, not Landmarks. Yes I have heard of it. And thank you, I am trying with some success in the Lot Editor. But if I don't want to put in too many add-ons, it's my choice.  And I have read on Simtropolis somewhere that it is not possible to create new ordinances and from my experience, create new rewards. So unless something has changed...

Shooshie:  20 years!!!  You're the 1st one on this site that I've seen make that claim besides myself!!  Did you start with the DOS verison??  And SC has come SOOOOOO far since then.  I've played a bunch of pc games, but SC is the one I always come back to.  And with a new pc (in a week or so) I might actually become a B.A.T.ter 3.gif and make some of my own content.  I look forward to many more years of playing SC, in whatever form it evolves to.quote>

You can add me to that list of life time simcity fans, I first played it on the Amstrad CPC464 back in 89/90, had to wait for 10 minutes or so for the tape to load (and some kids now complain about loading times in playstation games 9.gif). One interesting feature with the original sim citys was that you could build a completely road free city and rely only on the metro system for transport.

Played it again on the SNES.

Unfortunately a lack of suitable hardware left me cold turkey for about 10 years until I finally got a home PC and picked up Simcity 3000 and now simcity4 deluxe

I still find it incredible how watching a city grow and develop can soak up hours and hours (very handy when working away from home)

back to the topic in hand

Crashes - although i'm used to working with slightly unstable software so frequent saving is good practice

Fiddly issues, eg school and hospital funding. It would be so much less time consuming if min/max and auto grow parameters could be set on the schools, eg start of with $20 funding per month, and always stay 10% over funded to a max of $300 per month.

highway, rail, monorail junctions, sometimes they connect ok, sometimes they don't. But one thing you know is that you will end up building and bulldozing many times before it actually builds the system you want. And even with practice it doesn't get better/easier.

Lack of proper 3D or curved roads or lots, I'm getting sick of building grids! And since the landscape isn't grid shaped i would like my cities to fit into the landscape better

although I don't mind substituting realistic graphics for a faster and smoother running game

Roads going into tunnels for no real reason except for a little mound in the map

No easy way of building underpasses for roads or trains (although there is the elevated to subway station which works quite well

Bridges - pain in the proverbial to build a satisfying looking bridge

Water based plots, eg, ports and beaches, again very tedious waiting for the lot to turn blue so it can be placed, and then it's never where you wanted it to be built

Parks, ok these are fine but i think that they are slightly too expensive

Hard level - I think that the game was difficulty tested on five year olds with learning problems.  ITS NOT HARD!! Even on hard level I can easily get a $1,000,000 surplus before starting to build a proper city (ie just farm land and a few low density residential areas)

Land generation, as far as I can see there is no method for auto generating landscape as there was in the earlier editions, a sad loss.

As I written, so have many before me and still after, and most of the same stuff is said. I only hope that EA/Maxis has recieved some of the same complaints expressed here and have at least addressed some of these issues. These other games they have came out or coming out with don't tackle the promblem, only avoids its. Since they are different we will be distracted by the newness of the game, we won't be bothered by the memory of this game SC4, until nostalgicness kicks in and we miss it all over again. Then we will prey that they decide to make another. I could go on, I'm in a writing mood, but I will stop for the benifit of others.

i'll make a post here. just read this long-running thread and it looks like pretty much all the shortcomings are covered, so my post will be a general response to many of the critiques i read.

- commute time: certainly the calculations are not realistic, but one of the most rewarding things is to see a building go gray on you; you see the commute is too long; you view their routes; you add some bus stop near the building and their target locations, or you add another subway line to avoid congestion, or make a road an avenue, etc; then you see the building go bright again and see your commute-time graph spike downward after resolving lots of these, and seeing the population shoot up because of it

- desirability: sometimes, just to watch the jobs graph spike upwards, i'll have an IT city with tons of demand for jobs build up, but with desirability low so nobody takes the jobs; so then i'll add in lots of parks, reduce garbage, etc, then click cheetah speed, watch the entire area 'go green' with increased desirability and reap the results - all without zoning another Industrial square

so for many of the problems people have identified there are ways to resolve them. heck, that's even part of the fun of the game. for example, my current region has just over 1 million Sims, with the largest city being a mid-sized tile with 400K+ residents. i've got some serious traffic issues between that and my neighboring CO and Ix cities, in spite of highways, multiple subway and avenue and monorail connections going out. and my commute time has been 160+ for a while now. the way i see this is a challenge - how can i best spend my budget surplus to decrease the traffic congestion, and hence lower my commute times, but keep the population up?

but so i keep with the thread's topic and complain about something...i hate crashes and diagonal-road support, too

Hi all,

Let's first admit: I love this game and I am truly addicted to it.

However, there are a few things that are annoying and can drive me crazy sometimes, LOL.

1. The grid.

2. Diagonal roads/avenues look very ugly and unreal (and yes I have the network mod installed).

3. Diagonal bridges are impossible

4. The advisors

5. Saving a game can take ages sometimes

6. Zoom modus is sometimes very slow. I mean when there's a fire, or sims getting road rage (and the advisor pops up). (it already happend twice to me that I was bulldozing something when a fire broke out and due to slowness/not reacting when I pressed the ESC key, I bulldozed half of the city 15.gif ).

7. But one of the most annoying things is that roads sometimes won't connect 15.gif

Greetings,

Jan
