3ds Max - Troubleshooting & General Discussion
smstevenms replied to Jasoncw's topic in SC4 BAT & Lot Workshop
Have you tried the Omnibus? I noticed no one responded to my question. However I was also waiting for Omnibus to be up again, hopefully some of my questions will be revealed there or at least answered. Thanks for the link. -
I've been here at ST for awhile so I know this well, I also can go awhile without posting what I'm doing. I just wanted to post an update to get feedback before I go further. I just started working with gmax a week ago, so I don't know what many things do or where there at. This is why I gave up last time I first opened gmax years ago, but this time I found a tut that got me started. So if you could point out where I can view the "meters", I have no idea how to translate dimensions. As far as I know my building is centered. On the perspective, top, left & right are centered as far as the tut I followed. Here's the image: So if this isn't correct, are you suggesting that my building should be centered within the bold cross-hair or something else? The image I posted was to show that I have no idea how to render the image, if you could also lead me there that would be great. I would love to see it rendered as well as lighted (which I have no idea about either). Again I don't seem to totally understand what or how I should be appling this. As I said before when I clicked "Re-fit LOD's the perspective view shows a solid block. The other 3 views still show all of the individual elements. Also once I click Hi Res Geo I can't undo/unclick without my project disappearing (if Hi Res is relevant), when I click one of the LOD's they wont stay selected unless the "Re-fit LOD's" is selected, nothing changes after clicking on of the LOD's. So I don't understand how to use this tool. This is nothing more than a test. But yes I want to upload to stex which is why I'm here trying to get good . I appreciate the critique but the design is intentional. You have first floor that is 1 1/2 floors which allows for the eclipse window to work. The first floor also has a peak which would push the second floor windows higher thus appearing unbalanced. On the right side theres also a tall garage door. Although this is a small building (but meant to be larger) there are buildings that have a base floor that is much larger than the following floors. So imagine this being much larger. I'm not sure what or how to use the UVWmap. I played around with it but is made my texture unrecongnizable. Again when I said my design element was a window or dressing, at that moment I wasn't sure what it was going to be, but decided to make it a window. If I made it dressing it would be just a design and nothing that would affect the interior or structure. Please keep your comments coming because it is very productive, however don't stop there, guide me through my mistakes please. ----------------------------------------------- As mentioned above I don't know where to look to get these dimensions. Ok I use snap tool but I seem to have trouble with snap for front to side. Meaning I can snap on one side but to ensure that the walls touch I have to free-form my rectangle or goes either beyond or comes short of conecting walls. Hope you understand what I'm saying. Thank you for your overall comments, any guidence is appericated.

I'm not sure if the double post rule counts if your posting progress in a semi tutorial, if it does I'm sorry, just let me know. Anyhow, I was able to get the dimensions by holding right-click after opening preview, it 393H x 410W. Now I finished texturing, first version, and it doesn't look to bad imo. I don't know how to view my bat in a larger view than this. Here's a larger view I dragged & dropped model into Landmarks, used the Micheals lot by SimGoober (I think) in Lot Editor for size comparison. His building is roughly 5x2 squares and my model is just under 1x2. Not the size I was going for. I was hoping for 3/4ths size of the Michael's lot. One thing I have learned in this process doubt & confusion is that you really don't need to stay with-in the grid lines. I was keeping with autolock/snap feature. I think my third try will be even better.

Woah, many questions lol. What's LOD's, when I clicked Re-fit LOD's the whole building becomes a rectangle block, no windows. All the other LOD3, 4, 5 and All don't do anything and don't stay clicked. The reason I said the first version was to small was because it was 1/4th the size of 1 square. This was a practice/test building, but still too small for what I care to build. The current project is my dream version of my company building. This is likley a "first" version so it will evolve over time. As for some of the design features you enquire about, I wanted that many windows and variety. The second floor was meant to be smaller for aesthetics, I don't just a cube/box. As for floor height, other than counting squares (10 high for first floor) I don't know how to tell the dimension. The walls are 0.4 thick as outlined in one of the tutorials I followed. The "mouth-like" design on the side walls is either going to be a window or just dressing. Ok the Grid question, if you look torward the right-bottom corner, you'll see next to the Animate button a small window that reads "Grid = 1.0. If you scroll (zoom) a bit out it will go to Grid = 16.0, and repeat Grid = 256.0. Each grid has the same levels but the more you zoom out the larger the project will be. The tut's have Grid = 1.0, but were zoomed in a bit (there are about 9 levels with-in each Grid =), I zoomed out just before it becomes Grid = 16.0. I did a rendered preview but it looks the same just without the grid lines.

I was just going to post that there needs to be a tutorial for the properties, as there seems to be no guide out there. Problem is, as I read your post I see the word "here" but no link or any info that I assume would be the values you are speaking of. Also I was going to mention a min/max values table would be nice if someone knows what they are. I don't want to upload buggy bats.

MLVD - The scrolling drag could be caused by a few things. Other processes in background, improper ventalation (over heating), region size/growth all could have issue. I'm not familar with your graphics card, I have dual Nvidia GeForce 9800M GT so I never get this during game play. However from time to time I had this problem while scrolling webpages when my graphic cards fan wasn't venting as it was designed, replaced, and all was fine.

For not completing a sentence.

I reviewed the "Easy Spline Modeling in BAT" at SCDevotion. As good as it was to help me a bit further along, there like no one there responding. So if I don't understand a step I can't much further. I will check out this link you provided but I was hoping ST would have the tutorials needed. Hate jumping from site to site piecing information together. Below are images of what I have accomplished so far. This is the first, using "MayorRalphaelNinja's Guide to Basic Building Creation" from ea.com and Easy Spline Modeling in BAT This is a in-game view. This was way to small but was successful. I attempted to enlarge my building gmax but when I open it Lot Editor was the same size as the image above. The image was appearing as if I did enlarge it but only showed a cropped portion of if. Now I'm working on a larger building. I'm still working in "Grid=1.0" but zoomed as far out as possible. I'm not finished yet so I don't know if this will be a success or bust!

Tungston that actually worked. Strange bug uh. Thx

For not being the one to say why I should be banned!

I have been to SCDevotion but that only helped get me started. I've heard that Omnibus was pretty good for tuts so I was hoping until then some could give me some pointers. I'm still finding my way around gmax so there's only problems to post. I'm working on a building that I'm hoping will be more to scale than my last. As I mentioned before, creating a building already takes a bit of time with my limited knowlege of gmax, so creating textures and props for each creation is much to much. As for starting a thread, I wasn't even sure about starting this one. This is the BAT - Open Discussion so this should be an ok place? Once I finish with the building I'm working on now I'll what I've done wrong then report back!

One thing I hate is not knowing wether to start a new topic or post in someone elses. Since the search tool doesn't seem to lead me anywhere, starting a new topic seemed the way to go. I have a few questions since starting up with Batting. I haven't successfully uploaded a model that please me yet. My first seemed way to small, second seemed to be larger but only could see within the original size of first attemp. None the less I assume I'll get past this hurdle either on my own or through a tutorial (whenever it becomes availible). While I'm testing with larger dimensions I was thinking I'm going to need textures, even possibly props. I only have a few textures and props! I looked to see if I could access all of the textures that pop up in Lot Editor, unfortunately I have no idea where to look. I was also wanting props so I could decorate the roof tops of larger buildings or even bilboards, or donuts or whetever. I don't really want to have to create every last element for one creation. Where can I get textures & props, then how can I pull props into gmax (if possible). Side question: I noticed when using Plug-in manager, placing my bat in a catergory requires me to use the same category for Lot Editor. That would be fine if it was easy to sort out what was what. Also does any know of a "property manager" tutorial/guide? I don't want to upload buggy bats. I think that covers it, if this topic is out of place I'm sorry, if this is already a topic please direct me to it and I will move it.

3ds Max - Troubleshooting & General Discussion
smstevenms replied to Jasoncw's topic in SC4 BAT & Lot Workshop
Hello folks, I'm trying to start this batting thing and find myself spending more time researching answers than batting. I'm sorry to say but as nice as ST is looking the search tool is not flexible. There seems to be only one person responding at SC4D (cogeo) on occasion. So if this question has been asked already, please forgive me. I've created a basic building (following the tutorial at SCDevotion), unfortunately the size was less than a 1x1 square. I combined what I learned from the Maxis batting tip section with Couchpotato's tutorial, so I used the PZ3x3_ParkGreens to place my building. When I saw how small it was I said "this will not do"! So I reopened gmax and used the "Select and Uniform Scale" tool to enlarge entire object. After placing my edited building I still had the same size square with a corner of the building showing and enlarged.I've also learned how the Plugin Manager and Lot Editor works, if you place your building in parks then you have to use a park lot to place your building. So I went with a larger lot, that didn't didn't make a difference. Long question short, what is the right Grid=# to start with and is there a way to export my current building as the larger dimensions? Thx.
