I say we drill to the center of the world and have the capitol there. That way it would be in the center of everyone!

anyway....back on topic..

I dont think there should be a world capitol, because then everyone would have to agree to live under the same laws and ideas. And humans dont like to get along. Its just nature. Also, if there is a world capitol, if it does get attacked because of a group of people decide that they dont like the ideas put in place, the world would be driven into turmoil. Its just a recipe for disaster....

But for sakes of this thread...i choose Washington D.C. because....

The problem with any American city is just that - it's American. The capitol of the Western world could be in the United States (if not London), but it does not represent the other cultures of the world. America is western, too western to represent the world as one.

On the other side of the globe, Tokyo is a westernized East-Asian city, but then you miss out of Africa and west Asia. And South America, but their culture has basically gone to pieces, replaced by a western culture.

Most places in Europe have a long history behind them, and many world-changing decisions have been taken here. However, western again.

As I said above, Istanbul meets most of the criteria. It's bang in the middle of the world, so to say, it has been a meeting point for people from Asia and Europe since way back when, and the great African empires have also traded here. The Silk Road ends there, tying it to the Far East as well. Not to mention that it's probably one of the first places in modern-day Europe to be populated by humans, and we still reside there.

Just "discovered" this thread and am absolutely amazed by the suggestions. If history is anything to go by, neither density nor financial considerations would have any bearing. Look at Australia: certainly selected what appears to be the most boring city on the continent as its capital. Brazil even created a new city as its capital.

Thus a worl capital really would have to be a new city, preferably located away from current governments simply because such governments would try anything to corrupt its status. "Atlantis" comes to mind: artifically created, off-shore in either the Pacific or the Atlantic. Modern technology could, to a point, make it relatively weather-proof vis-a-vis the elements. It need neither to have the tallest buildings nor the biggest banks (the latter should be avoided at all costs) but it should have a revived UN at its hub to weed out the current crop of massive governmental failures of the UK, US, CHina, Russia, the EU, etc.

Which of course would make it Utopia and thus impossible..

I'd rather pick Manila...it's a mixture of New York City/Tokyo/Los Angeles...not only in city structures but the people lived in it...it's literally called "Urban Jungle"

nobody meontioned africa, uh? i just thought about some place in africa, because humans came from there all these years ago its really the start of everything! and this continent was totally messed up by the world so its just fair that they got their chance... and maybe in the future when we need such a capital africa is a safer place.

^Yeah, but it's not exactly a place renowned for tolerance, is it? Everybody want that city for their own religion, and more wars have been spurred over that city than any else in history.

I hate to say this, but the best solution for Jerusalem would be to bulldoze everything in it and start from scratch. Or leave out the "start from scratch" bit and make it like Chernobyl: a place where nature can reclaim the area without people interfering. Which would actually make the best capital ever.

I would pick hong kong For The world capital because it is highly industrialized plus a huge seaport for goods around the world and don't forget it's commercial center!

Well i dont think any one city could be the capital of the world, we might go with the South Africa approach and have like 3 capital cities, but if we must I've narrowed it down to these 3

1. Washington DC- Capital of the most powerful nation in the world, plenty of government infrastructure

2. Geneva- The Swiss dont ever fight over anything (exept money), plenty of international stuff there

3. The Hague- Home of the UN court

Here in Brazil, it's completing 50 years of construction of Brasilia, ours capital. I think the capital city needs to be impartial, neutral, and brand new, constructed unicaly for this purpose. I think the better is to build an floating city that is never in the same place. (may be floating on sea or on sky)

I think NYC could be the capital of the world, and in my opinion this city would be the best. It's good connected with other parts of the world, it is big city, and it has great architecture like Art Deco, also there is Broadway and many other things. I vote for NYC...but it is my opinion

Why not have a fleet of ships as the capital of the world, and they can move from country to country all the time.

This of course assuming there was a need for a capital of the world, which there isn't

I would say Chicago, but from the list I'd have to pick Paris. Soley because it is considered a major city in the EU and UN, and it seems to be the center (geographically) of the Modern world.

I won't pick a city in the US, because the US seems to think they are the world.

I like the idea of Geneva, Switzerland is indeed neutral ever since it became a country of its own.

The Hague does indeed house the International Court. Even though I'm Dutch and The Hague is the city that houses the government and Amsterdam is the capital, I'll stick to Geneva as Capitol of the world.

I think there should be region capitals, there are to many great cities in this world with different importans. If every region had a capital it would be more fare.

Region:                            Capital:                        Why?

Europe                             Brussels                     The European Unions headquaters are there and is the Center of EU.

North America                New York                    NY is the Economic motor in USA and biggest and most recognized city.

South America               Rio de Janeiro           Voted most beautiful city several times, famous for carnival, and kristusstatue.

Asia                                 Hong Kong                 Asias most advanced country with great infrastructure

Africa                               Cape Town                 Beautiful city, in africas most developed country, long tradition/history

Oceania                          Sydney                        The biggest, most known and most qualified city.

I think Brussels, New york and sydney are obvious choices, but Rio maybe hard to deside,  São Paulo and Lima are also qualified.

Africa was the hardest choice South Africa stands for 25% av the Whole Africas BNP so maybe it should be cape town, but cape town is situated far away from the rest of africa. are more sutable location would be Abuja(Nigeria) which also is the most populous country in Africa...

its odd everyone is saying that nyc is the financial capitol of the world,but that is incorrect,wilmington,DE is and has been since the 1970s.But out of the list id say NYC but in my own opinion either Wilmington or Oklahoma City because Wilmington is the financial capitol and Oklahoma City is the energy capitol.the 2 highest grossing industries.All the cities you listed are steriotypical because everyone would think one of them,but financially wilmington and oklahoma city are the best(which most would think of finance over culture)And culturaly New York City or Possibly Paris.

Religious capital of the world: Jerusalem

Capital of the World regarding Commerce: Defiantly Dubai, NYC, London, or Hong Kong. Those three cities stand out most.

My top ten list would be as follows:
