gigantic space colonies3.gif

feature_story_2_colony.jpg

What country the colony was orbiting over wouldnt be a problem, because the colonies would be stationary, sitting in the gravatational doldrums known as la grange points

I have a logical approach to this situation: take the world's largest economy (unfortunately California's the 5th), take that economies capitol, and restructure it slightly to handle the influx that occurs when a capitol is established, such as new government centers and embassies. TopCliff

Has anyone thought of creating an island on the intersection of the Equator and Greenwich Line? It is literally the center of the surface, and since the area is not controlled by any country, it would be the perfect place. And because of its central location, Europe, Africa, North America, and South America would have easy access to it. And to build it, there would have to be a joint international effort, further symbolizing it as the World Capitol.

I don't expect this would ever be an issue until almost a millennium or two has passed, maybe when the Age of Aquarius dawns in 2600, do you really think the world would actually unify anytime soon? I'd say the most logical place for a capital would be a new, mathematically planned city directly in the middle of all world population centers.

If I had to pick I'd say São Paulo, because it's an awesome place.

Please stay on topic. I had to delete a post that I didn't particularly like to read.

I personally don't think any capital of the world should actually be on the world (Which proves that my thought about the capital of the world has changed from my earlier thoughts). It would make sense if it were on the moon where no one holds claim to it at all (and of course not Antarctica where it's below the freezing point all the time).

Lagos, Nigeria.

Any world capital should establish firmly and symbolicly that a populist rather than economically based government is what the world wants.

Well to me it is pretty clear to me that the entire world is never going to fairly agree to one of the worlds existing cities being the world capital.

Yeah, thats true. It would be quite easy to be build a super city there with the appropriate technology, as there is plenty of space and no environmental worries as there is no environment on the moon.

Speaking from a particularly western (and Anglophonic) perspective, I feel the only two real choices would be New York City or London. They've traditionally been the centers of the (western) world for a long time for good reason.

Exatly,  they meet in São Tomé e Príncpe so I think the capitol of the world should be the city of São Tomé

New York City as it is the financial and UN capital. If the world pushes to a single economy and language (which it probably will eventually), I have a hunch that it will be English and the dollar. Most Chinese even though they are 1.3 billion strong and experiencing a major economic boom, can speak SOME English. Furthermore, all of the statistics published under te UN which concern money are published in relation to or measured in American Dollars. WOOT WOOT NEW YORK IZZLE

I would have to say London just because of its age and that its the banking capital of the world. Plus is still has recognition of the Commonwealth.

Top  2005 cities GDP PPP   Note: Tokyo Paris and London nominal GDP are much higher

Tokyo 1.2 trillion US dollars,

New York 1.1 trillion

Los Angeles 639 billion,

Chicago and Paris 460 billion

London 452 billion.

A world capital should be neutral and not very important

so if you want a world capital don't choose one of those cities.  .)

New York City should defiantly be the captial of the world despite the fact its GDP is 1.1 trillion and the world captial should be important. In nearly every country on Earth, the capitol is the most important city.

Well, I'm sticking with my "moon" capital; however, I'm noticing a common situation. It seems like most of the choices are based on the GDP of cities. Well, it doesn't make sense to me that economy should determine a capital. Just look at America's capital (Washington, D.C.) and yet look at New York City which isn't the capital. Obviously, if capitals were based on their GDP, then NYC would be our capital. I think if we were to have a capital on the Earth, then it's political history should determine the capital of the world such as (for example) Vienna.

Vienna is on a Neutral country

It is a good choise.

USA , Japan, U.K, France, Russia, China, India... are not neutral countries and are too important

Those countries should not have the capital in the world, it is dangerous

If the capital in USA ,China or Russia will not agree

If the capital is in France, UK or USA will not agree

If the capital is in China, USA Russia U.K France and Japan will not agree

etc...

Toronto for sure, its the most diverse city in the world, its like a mini world! Torontonian politicians know how to deal with people from all over the world, other politicians may have problems in that department.

English will be the international language eventually, but the dollar wont become international curency.  Most countries have switched from the US dollar to the EURO, which is worth more and used more around the world.

The Capitals of the world in an economic sense are London, Tokyo, and New York City.

Pick one of those.

Remember the movie Starship Troopers? The capitol was Geneva, Switzerland. I like it, because it's in the middle of Europe, and easily accessible from anywhere, the country is extremely neutral, it's diverse, and for all you banker types, Swiss banks do a ton of international business.

Just my $0.02

Slightly off topic, but since currency has been raised, if there were to be a world capital, there would have to be a new world currency---as the whole debate over the introduction of the Euro showed, there's just too many associations with present currencies for any of them to be universally accepted (as a Canadian, for example, I'd feel very strange about using the American dollar!). Clean slate!
