Lisboa (Lisbon), Portugal. because the portuguese "brought new worlds to the world" in the discoveries period. and the boats departed from Lisbon. it also sits in the tip of Europe, open to the world through the vastness of the Atlantic ocean. And with a multi ethnic population.

I absolutely loathe how everyone is basing their decisions solely on irrelevant matters such as history, wealth, population and size.

I might change my mind. Maybe New York is too ugly to be the world's capital. Zurich might be nicer.

What do we need a capital of the World for, at all? Why would we need to represent the World? Did we just discover something/somebody out there and I didn't hear of it? :S hahaha 4.gif

How will we know where to send extraterrestrials who tell us to take them to our leader?

Haha, I agree with  altherr, why would be need a World capital? Maybe if we found other populated planets, but until then, it wouldn't be neccessary, but it's still cool to think about it.

I would pick Rome because not only is it where the Roman Empire once existed thsy basically defined the world today and six major world languages, but it is also contains Vatican City, the center of the Roman Catholics and it is the world's most popular religion. Just my views.

omg...what is this daft obsession with Dubai? Is it because they have a bad case of Skyscraper Envy and are compensating for something? How many people who say "Yay, Dubai" have actually been there?

Fargo, North Dakota.

There's plenty of unhindered, relatively flat land, the aliens would know of it from televised showings of the movie, and the aliens always seem to come to some Great Plains/farming community, anyways. 3.gif

The UN is in NYC cos no other country wanted a city full of bureaucratsquote>

Actually, it's in New York because Europe wanted it to be in the US to help make sure we stayed involved in Europe's affairs (no more waiting two years to get into a major war for us!)3.gif And originally, they wanted to make a large campus in the north of Greenwich or Stamford, Connecticut (where I now live, heh), but the locals weren't too happy with that idea so they stuck it in a skyscraper in New York instead.19.gif

hmmm....I'm Hungarian....if I didn't know where Budapest was....I'd have to be kicked up side the head for a week...lol....

nah...just me being stupid...but Budapest is probably one of the oldest cities even if Hungary is 1,000 years old....Budapest is almost twice as old...And also it is a rather peaceful place and a good nation....maybe not nuetral like the swiss, but we don't really have that many ties to many nations...

The capital of the world should be biult from scratch... And be its own country about the size of Malta. Where to biuld this city is a completley different story, but it should be somewhere close to other major areas as well as the physical aspects of every part of the world in it. So, it would be difficult to find a suitable location that has both snow and palm trees....

I was thinking of a compromise to this, where the landmass is diverse, such as on the northwestern South American coast, where its hot at the lowlands by the Pacific, but snowing up in the mountains not too far away. This would make the area larger than Malta, but who cares right now? Another great spot is somewhere in southern Japan, where similar landmasses are, but much of that area is rugged and biult up as much as it really can be biult.

Just my thoughts on where the Capital of Earth should be... If we are to explore the final fronteer (space), we must merge our nations! One planet, One country! Thats how it will be when (or if) we settle on new worlds.

thze facts are that the EU econemy is at the moment larger then the US espacilly since the number of countries trading with the US is dropping just because US attitude agains the world

the only diffrence between the EU & US is that the US has turned this economical power into political power

allso consumption especially oil is much larger in the US making the EU far less dependent on it

example

a hummer2 consumes average 1 liter of gas per 1 kilometer

my car ,built in the EU in 1993, consumes average 1 liter of gas per 7 kilometers

i wouldn't believe a word the CIA says

the world first nuclear fussion reactor is called Iter its a prototype with the best change of working & is now under construction in the south of France (which is a EU member state), to be completed somewher in the 2010's

& there were a lot of european scientist involved in the manhattan project

a workingnuclear fussion reactor could produce as much elektricity as 1000

I'd still say Washington D.C! That is the capital of the most powerful nation in the world (and in the history of the modern world). What better to choose than D.C?

Err... you're really flamebaiting there. Out of pure bias, I'd pick Toronto - though it does have a decent claim to that idea, being probably the most diverse city in the world. But if I'm being honest, it's undoubtedly New York. No other city has the same kind of international cultural influence or economic power which is centred there. If you're talking political centres, then cities like Geneva and Den Haag enter the picture, but they don't have much influence beyond the political sphere. I'm not discounting Europe's economic, cultural, or political power - it's just that it's more dispersed and decentralised. You can't talk about London, for instance, without including Paris as well.

just FYI:

from the ITER site:

"What is ITER?

ITER is a joint international research and development project that aims to demonstrate the scientific and technical feasibility of fusion power. The partners in the project - the ITER Parties - are the European Union (represented by EURATOM), Japan, the People´s Republic of China, India, the Republic of Korea, the Russian Federation and the USA. ITER will be constructed in Europe, at Cadarache in the South of France."

saying that the EU has a bigger economy than the US is like saying that the Lakers is better than michael jordan.

You guys can't compare a continent to a country(like a basketball team to a player)

if you want to compare continents to continents fine do that(europe wins) but quite being cheap, it only makes you look desperite(sp?)

Well my opinion is to leave it the way it is, or maby even globalize even more put more power into south America and Africa, even though they are poor.

If there HAD to be a "capital of the world" who cares if we put it where the biggest economies are NOW, what about just putting it a place where it's going to be a safe place to live and have a goverment, and were it might help the surrounding economy. (Maby the safest place to put it would be Norway, though were in Norway would you put it, hehe, and WHY? I mean Norway is like the riches coutry in the world, why have it here. )

I just think the thought of it is to hard to imagine, cause we are humans, and everyone wants some power, the best thing would be and spread everything all over the globe. It's not like distance is a problem anymore!!! Why put it in one place then?

take care,

edit: About the Europe is better than US thing, I agree can't compare continents with countries, but what he may have meant is that US has been a powerful nation for a while now, but since Europe has collected its self and the EU is strong, and the Euro is a much stronger currency than the dollar, so in a whole the EU stands out like a strong Union of Countries more than JUST a continent. Maby like the US is a Union of states.. see?

FOR THE RECORD, I am from Norway, and WE are NOT part of the EU.
