I thought I'd go ahead and map my whole region 4.gif:

prog02akf1.jpg

(Picture links to much bigger version)

But that's only the start 14.gif - the canvas you see there is approximately 50% of my region, and the big version is half size (the 'thumbnail' is 18% size).

So I'd better get back to my 50MB behemoth of a map then. I may be some time....

This is a Rand McNally style map for my city journal Sessquenna.  I originally wanted to do Google map form but the quality went to crap quickly with my photo editing program, as you can see the same thing happens with this map too, disappointing, but it still looks decent.  I'm still trying to figure out an efficient way to represent rail, so time consuming to make otherwise.

NOTE: This is a small area, maybe the size of a small tile area of my city.

packersfan, nothing to be ashamed of, that looks great. Just like a real map of a real city. Looking forward to more.

Commandoj251, if you read through the thread there are hints throughout on how to do this. But partly you just have to experiment on your own. It's pretty difficult to tell someone on a forum how to use PhotoShop or any other image editing program.

@JitteryJoe - nice rail map for Khorstadt. Do you have a CJ for that city?

@Shingure - thanks for showing your maps.

@CraigKingOfIreland - nice map - how is your plan developing?

@Mikel - nice map, thanks for sharing it.

@MayorBK - wow, can't believe how many lines you have there.

@Simfan34 - nice symbols - but is that really a bus stop on the motorway?

@niaba - thanks for posting your map.

@The_Life_Of_Brian - lots of lines - are they different modes or all subway?

@Joe90 - that is a very impressive map! When it is finished it will be incredible.

@packersfan - nicely done. I'll have to stop by your CJ.

New developments in the city of Ellington...

To promote use of the underground city planners approved rerouting the western leg of the Southside line through to the new Stadium station. The new stadium and Stadium Line of the underground were inaugurated at the same time.

The shortened Southside line took over the southern branch of the Riverside line, which was simultaneously extended west by 2 more stations.

Hope you don't mind, I'm quoting your previous map just so I can compare them side-by-side. So here it is:

I've been working on this since about the beginning of December.  I hope to have a CJ of it shortly.

This is only the very central part of the city.  You can see the two rail termini at the Northeast of the city.

The map is actually oriented to the same grid as SC4...it's just that none of the streets are (see the in game region pic for what's mapped).

This is done with OCAD 6 (freely available).  The appearance is similar to that in the UK Cartographer's AtoZ maps with a few minor differences (one ways, for example, are shown with the inside (left side) dashed (traffic drives on right).

To the best of my knowledge, the road layout is consistent with the in-game accessibility (i.e. medians are shown on avenue when roads have access to only the close side of traffic).

Yup....  I unashamedly drew inspiration from the city.  The tileset is actually entirely Dutch buildings.

Though, the rest of the city draws from more topographically inspiring locations.

It's like Amsterdam crossed with Vancouver to me. I really like the map!

For anyone who likes looking at maps, I just bought a pretty cool book called "Transit Maps of the World." It apparently has the map for every single mass transit system/metro type thing in the world. Now, some of them are pretty small for the less exciting system, but places like London, New York, Chicago, Moscow get multiple pages of maps through time, with write-ups on the development of the system and the style of the map. Very interesting and recommended if you are (like me) the kind of person who loves looking at a train map from somewhere else and imaging what that place is like.

I got the book at Borders but the other big stores have it and of course Amazon if you want to check it out.

I know that this is a mapping topic, but I'd love to see screenshots of your Vancouver/Amsterdam cross... (Vansterdam? Amcouver?) Any thoughts to starting a CJ?

mentarman: Thanks... I actually got that book recently. It's very interesting. Since it deals with the maps, and not the subways themselves, I was ecstatic about it (I'm kind of a map nut 4.gif ) There is definitely a lot of good advise to be taken from it with regards to building a subway map.

bbfan02: Thanks.

Benedict: Yes, this is certainly a CJ city. I'm currently filling in Suburbs and readying the first updates. I plan on getting 3 or 4 updates prepared before I post the first one, because once school gets going, I want to be able to keep it going even if I can't be playing the game. I know it doesn't help much, but I sort of envision this happening within the next week to a month; which 5 days ago, I probably would have said I was going to continue building up indefinitely, so, I kind or expect that to be the case. I'm working and going to class a lot more starting this week, and this city will no doubt suffer. 15.gif

I've finalized the city's name as Guilford. The nation is as yet unnamed, but it sits about where Greenland is, with a mild Northern European/British style climate. The nation is about 30-35 million people, mostly centered on the eastern seaboard, a few on the west. Guilford is the nation's no. 3 city with about 1.5-2.5 million in the greater guilford area (though the CJ will start at about 700,000). It was colonized by the British is the 17th century, so naming of cities is very much akin to American and Canadian Eastern cities.

Topographically, the city lies in a valley where a series of lakes and rivers join the nation's largest river system to the broad Great Soma River which flows 400 km down to the coast (where it meets the city of Rochester and King Charles Island...very much an analogous to NYC and Long Island). The city sits at about 600', about 100 miles of canals join the large lake to the south of guilford with the navigable portion of the Soma river about 400' below (which descends the remaining 200' gradually). The lake itself goes over a series of falls before joining the Great Soma River.

And now you know more than you ever cared to about the city...

No it's a mix of EL lines which drop underground in the city centre. There are also one or two heavy rail lines on the map too. The map was made with GIMP....if it interests anyone

Well,  I saw some of Benedict's maps in a cj last month and really wanted to try my own out.  It's also posted in my own cj, Port Matthew.  Perhaps you've heard of it?  I'm really proud of this.  It took me quite a while to create in MS Paint (haha, yes, Paint!) but probably coming up with the names was the most difficult part.  And thanks also to mentarman who pointed this out to me.  This is a really great thread (I've always been something of a map geek).

2208097993_33fd88a004_o.jpg

The Center City Line and Streeter Bay Line both extend outward to other cities in the region.  I'm planning on creating a train map and as soon as I finish my subway system I'll transit-map that as well!

BTW, there are some REALLY great maps in this thread.  I'll bet you're all secretly brimming with pride!2.gif
