What is the best Highway? Ground or Elevated? Also, what is the best layout for each?

Ground is cheaper and works better in rural areas but elevated is a lot easier in urban areas (and realistic with large cities). As most cities grow to be quite urban (even if you try not to), elevated it is. They both have pros and cons though, a city can grow around a ground highway, whereas to run one through the middle of your city elevated is easier. You can also do more things with elevated.

I like to make ground highways. I usaully use them has a barrier. That way, I use the overpasses as a way to control traffic flow across my city.

That doesnt always work to your advantage, my exprerience is usually that overpasses get more crowded and it is harder to lay them out because they require etensive approaches. The optimal way is to make it elevated in zoned areas and ground in undeveloped areas.

I agree with JCarter, the ground highways do require a lot more planning  ahead if you want that region tile to become more urban and a perfect example of elevated to ground highways and the differences between them is in Bangkok where in the denser and more built up areas is the elevated and in the suburban sprawl is the ground highways.

Unless you have the NAM and/or use terrain to create tunnels and bridges all over the place, then pick your highway based on what type of mass transit you'll be using:

Rail can't go over ground highways, but it can go under elevated highways. The reverse is true for monorail and, I believe, el-train.

I use ground highway so that later I can install a monorail network.

Important, for urban areas such as downtown, where many roads get junction each other, is better to use th Elevated. Suburban or rural areas requires ground level. You also can make Sunken Highways (i don't like them though) but they are a good example of replacement of them, specially elevated haghway

I like to use ground highways in rural areas and any other places where there won't be many entrances and exits - like a limited access highway. I use elevated highways in my urban settings. I never build my highways when I start a city. I just upgrade from road to avenue to highway on the routes that get the most use.

Lestatd1, I run rail over ground highways all the time.  You just need a three-tile approach on either side of the highway for the overpass to form.

with the NAM and a few empty tiles on either side, you can run monorail over an elevated hwy, too.  You can also do like many hwys. in the real world: ground between exits with elevated overpasses. (you'll need 6-8 tiles on either side of the road/avenue to make the ground-elevated transition and the elevated ramp)

@how_deep: I don't know if you have seen any of my posts in the CJ section - even though I am a big fan of the NAM I DO HATE THESE RAILWAY OVERPASSES!!!!! 26.gif32.gif

Why? Easy reason - Railways are way more sensitive to slopes than any other traffic - including Highways! Because of this Highways go over or under the railway wherease Railway keeps its slope.

A nice overpass would be the NAM transition piece - elevated Highway - NAM transition piece - if you don't want to spend so much place use the ingame transition ground <-> el. Highway.

I generally try to keep it to ground motorways, i only use elevated to make nicer higher looking bridges and for overpasses, i use a lot of tunnels aswell under urban areas, since im used to this occuring around densly developed areas(rather than pulling down a full row of blocks one usually just tunnels under them, atleast here in Stockholm).

I use motorways as a way of funneling traffic over all my small rivers and such because they just complain about the ordinary roads beeing overcrowded, they dont do that with the motorways *yay* 1-0 to me against the Transit Advisor

How did you get those rail overpasses? Please PM them to me, as I might never look at this thread again.

Goldfish4209: if I am not mistaken they are located in the NAM under the Train Tracks. Just use Tab to cycle through to get your desired puzzle pieces.

I generally avoid using ground highways due to the fact that most of the time I find the need to replace them for building requirements. They always seem more like barriers that keep the city divided, there can't be a unified city if were divided.

???????If anyone can help, why can't we build bridges on land? I've tried small spans, large spans, and medium to high in height, and none will be built. Second yet combined, why can't you have a road go under the bridge? Sometimes I like building long bridges that will cover some land and this makes things divided for that length of that bridge. Since I know the answer to my question, is there a mod, patch, or anything that can make these two things possible???? If not I hear a creation challenge!!

You can build bridges on land, as long as you have the NAM installed and you use the road puzzle peices.

I use eveleated highways in my downtown/near downtown areas, because I dont want to cut of roads in my downtown. But as soon as I get away from the downtown I use ground level.

I use the rural highway even in my urban areas.  It looks and functions so much better than the regular ground/elevated areas.

Heres a really simple shot of a rural highway in a cityscape.

Hello, How is everyone. I am kinda new to this, so please bare with me. I have been experamenting with some maps and road layouts. These cities are still in planning, so some of the highway in the north (pict on the right) is going to be blow up. most likely it will be the one running through industral section. I'm trying to make a reigon that might resembal an area in the future(like 2030). I have not yet made a CJ, but planning one soon.
