The best capital city in my openion is Dublin City, Ireland. It has a fast growing population of over 1.2 million and has arguably the best atmosphere in the world. just look at this street, this is a typical shopping day in the center of town! and when they all want to go home, the take the light rail system or even the soon to be Dublin underground! what more do you want...

i would go for at least london, paris, new york or tokyo, the 4 most important city's. at number one still stands london.

also dubai would be a good city, for it's architecture, it's wealth, it's function, also beacause it's a very very touristic city and a commercial one, and also for the fact it's the fastest growing city in the world

Tokyo is odd in that at the center of the bustling chaos of the modern city sits the vast and secluded imperial palace compound of gardens and moats. A black hole in the middle of the city. So secluded and secret was this former shogunal castle that colorful old maps usually depicted the area of the castle as a blank white unknown space. Through some legal stretching and interpretive gymnastics, we might even consider the historic and traditional capital of Kyoto, which still preserves much of the fading older Japan.

There is something cool about the historic capitals of the old European empires, such as Vienna, Prague, and St. Petersburg. Their center cities are filled with lofty and astounding architecture showcasing the lost glory and grandiosity of their imperial states. Those empires and dynasties and are gone, and St. Petersburg isn't even a capital anymore, but to stand before the Baroque Hofburg or the Winter Palace is to know you were in a treasured place.

Though if the Washington powerbrokers have their say, there is a reason the posting of U.S. Ambassador to the Court of St. James is the most favored and sought position for political friends and campaign donors. London is just that cool.

Like dmscopio said I say Canberra, never been there, (i'm in Atlanta, which in my mind is the greatest capital city) but from the countless pictures, videos, and maps i've read and watched, its a gorgeous place, and has accents of Frank Lloyd Wright, plus it really reminds me of the US in flora and climate. (love you aussies)

Definitely not Warsaw! 4.gif Maybe Prague? It's really beautiful city, it has a lot of old monuments... Or if Stambul was a Turkish capital city, I'd choose it 2.gif

I vote for Bangkok !

not for the clean air nor urbanism but

1/  it is so affordable when you come from the West and it is nice to stay in a hotel with swimming pool and all for 20 euros per night. I can't figure what it would cost in Paris, London, Amsterdam or NYC...

2/  the Thaï people ! they are so laid back, fun, humorous, patient, helpful !

3/ the mixture of temples and skyscrapers

4/ the nightlife and shopping facilities

this city has everything ! Definitely BKK !

Well, I said the county/city.  Metro area is different but I think my source is extremely reliable.

US Census Bureau.

Seeing as the only Capital I've been to is D.C., and I can't really remember it, I'm just going to have to go with a state capital.

For that choice, I pick Olympia, Washington. Sure it isn't big, it doesn't have any skyscrapers, and only a few monuments, but it has more than enough to make up for it.

The Capitol building itself is quite impressive, which apes the National Capitol, but is situated on a hilltop amongst trees, so that as you travel on Interstate 5, you glimpse just the magnificent dome. Olympia's CDB is built on a flat between the Capitol Hill and Puget Sounds, a features a largely revived downtown of brick buildings housing stores and eateries. Just to the north of downtown is the old dealership district, where the old car dealerships have all been converted into nice restaurants and such, reviving the area. The south end of downtown features the harbor, where you can get a nice view of the Capitol standing high above the masts of hundreds of sailboats, at its position at the top of a cliff. Also, one of the best features is the amount of trees. City planners set out to make it appear as you're driving on the Interstate that you aren't really in a city, except for occasional glimpses.

Really, it is a beautiful town to visit, and has the sort of charm many large government cities don't possess.

My favourites I would say are Rome, London and Paris. All three are national capitals and all have a great history, and are very unique with plenty of places in each too visit. Included in that list are others I like too, but they are my favourites.

Think i'd have to go with Edinburgh in all its volcanic glory, its only got a population of 450,000 people but its a fantastic city 9.gif

I've been to London and Dublin and the architecture in those cities isn't exactly the greatest. Plus, London is faaar too big, even though there are some Skyscrapers, the skyline isn't brilliant. Dublins alright, the River Liffey goes right through the centre and the General Post Office is a magnificant building... plus they built a giant Needle thing for some reason... but thats about it.

Edinburgh's centre is friggin wierd... i've noticed, because of the radical height changes in the land, most roads in the centre of the city are built half way up the buildings, leaving smaller roads to weave under the bridges and its probably the only Capital city on the planet wich has a castle dominating the skyline. The architecture is beautiful, with the castle, the Scott monument, Calton Hill, Holyrood Palace, St. Giles Cathedral and that stupid Dynamic Earth museum, its a mix of the new, the old and the extremley old. you can see it all by climbing up Arthurs Seat, a huge craggy hill that Edinburgh is built around. Its also a world heritage site, along with places like Venice, Rome and the Statue of Liberty.

Peh, my rambling over but im sure some of you, at least one person will agree... lol

you are referring to what it would mean in english, yes ? Actually in thaï it means "city of plums" or something like that which is not too far from reality either 9.gif though "Bangkok" is only one district of the city and the current name used by the "farangs" (westerners). The Thaïs know it as "Krung Thep" which means "city of Angels" (quite accurate as well) and the full name is (hold your breath) : Krung Thep Maha Nakhon Amon Rattanakosin Mahinthara Ayutthaya Mahadilok Phop Noppharat Ratchathani Burirom Udom Ratchaniwet Mahasathan Amon Phiman Awatan Sathit Sakkathattiya Witsanu Kamprasit

which means :

"The city of angels, the great city, the eternal jewel city, the impregnable city of God Indra, the grand capital of the world endowed with nine precious gems, the happy city, abounding in an enormous Royal Palace that resembles the heavenly abode where reigns the reincarnated god, a city given by Indra and built by Vishnukam."
