     Thank You

To everyones views and replies. Without everyones interest I probably wouldn't have doen so much this last month. Having people keeping an eye on the region keeps me plugging away on it. The road network continues to grow and problems for later are being solved. After the roda network is finished I should release another copy and the few lots needed with it for anyone interested. This should be done by the end of August. Then the fun begins. Fast paced city growth and major detail.

    -How its done-

If you've ever wondered exactly how I make this region to an exact scale I'm going to show you.

    1. I needed an acurate scale and a map. After buying a map I had to find exactly how to scale each city square.
    2. After a few test of what an average city block would look like I devided the map up into squares and figured out how many squares equaled a lot.
    Here is the Scale,
    abEdmontonScale.jpg

    3. Now with this in hand to find a road or terraforming point I would measure from a reference point. Many times the side of the map or another major road. Once Measured in CM's I would just convert into lots and figure out where to place the Road.
    Here is an example...
    /idealbb/files/Map3.JPG

    4. To quickly count lets say 76 spaces (lots) to Castledown Road I would just use a street which is $10 a square. So once at $760 I would stop...then do the other side measuring. Now I have a 2 space gap...where I laythe new Avenue/Road.

    5. Now I destroy the streets that I used for measuring and I'm left with the accurate place Road.

This is the step I go threw for most any road street avenue rail...terraformed point or anything else...And getting into the many curved roads is another story.

Not an update....but an appology to the viewers. Seems the first 3 pages which are older then 8months have lost there pictures due to ST...? If I can I will try and replace some of the main ones. Until then who knows.....guess CJ's with 16,000 views that may contribute to this site are not immune.

Man this is some great work.
I am new here and a fellow Albertan Banffite and I am really excited to see this realistic project undergoing.
I noticed that you've a Canadian Rockies Region but I can't seems to see any picture of it in your other post. Do you still have the files? Does that region include Banff?

Anyways, keep up the good work! And good luck to the Eskimos...

this CJ really is incredible, and realistic2.gif

but your pictures on the first 3 pages got destroyed as they did in the Digby CJ8.gif

you should replace them...and also save the rest of your pics, something weird is going on with ST's bandwith.

Cool layout strategy TJD! I layout a grid or streets layour with measuring road to for preplaned cities. I have yet to plan a real city at such realism yet.

    -Millwoods-
    The Beginning...

This is just a rough update of the Millwoods area in SE Edmonton. In my next update or two I will show comparitive maps and more finished work. Millwoods is probably the hardest part of Edmonton to do, due to many curved roads. This area is still nearly perfect in accuracy. With alot of cross reference points placed and an extra measurement or 2. Only thing that may be off is elevations, Millwoods has a small ravine that I havent seen much of myself and small changes in the elevation that I may not have placed just right.

Heh, kinda skipped out to the edge there with Millwoods, didn't we?

    Nonetheless, great job!

Seeing all the grids from this last view is really mind-boggling...6.gif

You're doing a really great job with the city, the grid and the realism.
    2 questions though:
    1. How do you plan on making the downtown or any other area looking like it is today, in the real world?
    2. After you caught up with the real city what are you going to do next?

    Millwoods 2nd Update
This is the 2nd update of the making of the Millwoods area in SW Edmonton. I have alot more to do but as promised with comparitive maps here is the work in progress.

    EdmontonJuly4.jpg

    EdmontonJuly5Millwoods2.jpg
Boris : Yeah I sorta skipped. There is mainly Industry inbetween Millwoods and the rest of the city so Its not like Its missing much. Those areas will probably fill in next.
U_W : For creating downtown so far I am searching for simular BAT buildings. I had the Telus Building being built by Jbbry232 but he gave up and recently left ST. I don't DL many BATs so I'm being picky. As for my next project believe it or not I am working on 4 regions right now.
    11.gif
Edit : The #3 on the map is 50th Street not 75th....

As a Vancouverite, I find your meticulous road layout impressive and very methodical. Comparing the 2 maps you supplied, I see no difference with the real Edmonton and the digital Edmonton that you will create in the game. Just think: the hard part is almost over; zoning will be a walk in the park! Well done, and keep it up!

I don't know what program art money is but, this region was made by hand terraforming entirely using a scale. Using the same scale I made all of the roads aswell. If you have any questions on how to do a region like this just ask I have a few tricks and ways to make a scale.

I dunno...I'm just thinking, zoning may be easy, but will the simulator actually allow the city to function the way it should? The unrealistic aspects of the game seem to ditch any aspirations of realism in my cities, so we'll see [crosses fingers].

By the way, I am extremely impressed by your to-scale reproduction of Edmonton. This is one of my favorite city journals ever. I've never been to Edmonton, I only lived in Vancouver for a little while. I'm hoping that I'll be able to visit someday and that I'll be able to see how closely your simulated version resembles the actual city. That's why I'm hoping the simulator will allow Edmonton to grow and function realistically!

Here is the only Satelite map I have slightly altered to show my region bounderies and sarounding areas. Included are the Small cities populations. Aswell as The International Airport which is 10minutes south of the city. And the massive airstrip at Namao which is the only place in Canada where you can land a space shuttle. There where times during WW2 when Edmonton was the busiest airport in North America.
    EdmontonJuly6.jpg

Quito : I know your point. There are many reasons why this will be hard. City lot of City lot of low res may make it impossible for commutes. I dont use altering mods now but may plug thme in while using this region. Also I need to figure out Utilities and Civic Department which on these split up maps the city will not have any facilities in areas. I am working on ideas but the goal is always realism.

well artmoney is a hex program where you can change the value of your money to get more when ever you need it. I thought you may be doing something like that cause roads cost money. i have ran out doing the same as you are with out it.

oh yeah one more thing.... it looks like tou have a bridge with a road under it near your downtown on the river bank. how do yall do this? I have been looking for a how to with the hihway or something for a long time and i cant find anything.

Mentos : Sorry I should have known I think Ive heard of that before. What I use is the Money Tree lot that gives out an almost unlimited amount of money. I'm not trying to recreate the Cities actual budget.....lol SC won't run in the red for over a year 11.gif.

Mentos : Sorry it's called SimoleonTree and should be on the site still?
And you cant get a bridge over roads which makes so many things a bit harder. The trick is you raise the land slightly. Just enough to make a tunnel. If you have a Bridge that is an avenue 2lots wide make the space for your tunnel 4lots wide. Now put your roads threw creating a tunnel and then build the bridge over head. there are a few places on this CJ you can see this. For example look at my Legislative pictures. To the lower left you can see pictures of tunnels running under 2 bridges, where in real life its actualy a road under a bridge.11.gif
