Sorry for the lack of updates. I've moved to NYC as some may know. The past month have been a bit crazy and exciting with the moving process.

Though, right before the move the hard drive my recreation was on gave out and died after 10 years of working. Thankfully, I backed up everything last year sensing something like this would happen in the future. No worries, my NYC recreation is not lost; it's just where it was one year ago. Same thing with my BAT's. I wasn't really BATing much this year anyway, the only BAT lost was the Flatiron Building unfortunately.

So on a new laptop I am bringing my reaction back to the point it was at 3 weeks ago- lots of downloading NYBAT's and getting rid of brown boxes. This is the third time I've saved/ recovered my recreation from nearly being lost, you'd think I give up by now. Nope. 4.gif Now I have the city at my doorstep and don't have to rely on pictures/ Google Streetview for reference.

Though, I won't have a major update for a little while now because there's understandably some RL things that must come first. Just stopping in to tell everyone what's going on.

Time to dust this thread off and post another update. This is a big update, not because there has been major progress, but because I had to start over.

The Maxis map I was using was beginning to get difficult in terms of scale and accuracy. Due to being out of scale all the streets I laid out were also out of scale and had to be re-adjusted for more recent downloads. The streets in the Lower Manhattan was a mess to deal with in terms of plopping down buildings. Midtown was also being unruly near Park Avenue as the blocks were out of scale and I had to demolish streets to plop down accurately scaled buildings. Dead end streets in the middle of Midtown wasn't very accurate and didn't look that great at closer zoom levels.

Also, some of you know my computer crashed a few months ago (right after I moved to NYC convienently) so transfering my plugins onto my laptop resulted in brown boxes scattered around the region. It was just easier to start over rather than try to fix all of those problems.

Here's my the new map (excuse the menu bars, I still haven't figured out how to do print screen on a Mac)

The more accurate region map by NHP

The Financial District (the plaza tiles are placeholders for buildings)

    financialdistrictjan600.png

    Midtown

    lowereastsidemidtownjan.png

    Midtown 2

    lowereastsidemidtownjan.png

Midtown 3 (Rockefeller Center is out of action for now because it's showing up as a brown box and I get a message saying I'm missing Plugin Pack 51, even though I have all the Maxis plugins42.gif I might just BAT it if I can't find the missing plugin pack)

    uptownjan27001293058075.png

There are some small problems with this map though. Midtown is split in half by the and the map might be just a bit too big by a couple tiles. Not a big problem it just means slimming down Manhattan by a block or two.

This is going to be a real city journal this time as I'll post my progress as I fill out the map. More developments on the  Version 2 of the New York recreation Project next time.

An ambitious project, to start all over like this. But if anyone can do it, I know you can.

Your dedication to this never ceases to amaze me. 4.gif Wonderful work Elliot. Hopefully the rest of NYBT will be a good help on getting that map filled up quite a bit. Good luck with it all!

That's unfortunate that you have to start over after 4+ years of work. But your work is always great, and I always look forward to the finished product.

Wow now thats a list! ..but in truth if you want to "replicate" NYC there are over 90,000 buildings in the five boroughs so even plopping them would take a while, if they could ever be made.

    Hanson, good luck with v2!

Wow, that's beautiful. You've got a lot of work ahead of you, but you can do it. It's amazing that you've got every building in the right location! I'm curious about the lack of avenues, however. But I must say, your work is amazing.

I still have my orginal map WillG_75. I wouldn't get rid of 7 years of work like that.

I don't think it'shumanly possible for one person to replicate even half of Manhattan without suffering from an aneurysm. I meant replicate within reason, time (and sanity).<img alt="" src="https://community.simtropolis.com/assets/emoticons/2.gif" /> Google has come close to replicating NYC in 3D but even with all their manpower they could only do Manhattan. To replicate just Manhattan would be a life long project.

I am however thinking about developing a NY tileset as there's many residential buildings that look nearly the same and I've noticed about 10 styles of low rise and mid rise buildings when out and about in the city. Zoning large areas of them would be much more efficent than BATing block by block.

Well I'm finally back with a long awaited update. I haven't had as much time as I'd like to work on version 2 of the project or even BAT as my life has gotten understandably busier since I've moved to the Big Apple.

    simmanhattan.png

There's been a little bit of progress in terms of building (back) up the skyline, most notably Downtown. I did a little bit of work yesterday plopping buildings in their spots and adding to the mishmash of Financial District's street layout. Laying bridges is going to be a challenge as the different areas of the map are divided right in the middle of the water. No fault to NHP as this is a great map, it's just how the USGS divided it up...

    uptownjan27001293058075.png

Midtown hasn't changed much since Dec except a little bit around Park Avenue

Unfortunately, I'm still working on my laptop and as I add more and more to the map it decreases my laptops memory. The game crashes now every so often and that it be difficult to make any progress when SimCity is crashing to the desktop every couple of minutes.

I'm planning on buying a desktop so I can make more efficient progress (plus, it's always good to have a PC)

That's nice. Reminds me of GTA 4 with the Art Deco architecture.

If you mean three or four lane streets I'm having trouble getting the Network Widening Mod to work due to a conflicting plugin. I've removed all the recommended plugins but I still can't create mulitple laned streets.

I think the conflicting plugin is an old version of the NAM.

Do you have the current NAM (Version 30)?

If you don't, then, delete the NAM folder, download and install NAM Version 30 and its related plugins in this order

    1. NAM Version 30

    2. Network Widening Mod 2.0 or any other latest NAM related mods (e.g. RealHighway V5.0)

    Hope this helps.

Apologies for not updating this thread in a year or so... I really need to do a better job of updating everyone of my progress on a more regular basis. It's such a massive undertaking of epic proportions and requires a lot of time, even for small stuff. No updated pics yet, I've been currently stuck on the new map of how to put the bridges in; specifically the bridges that cross the East River...

The new map of NYC (I think it's MallowtheCloud's if i remember correct) is divided up into sections that cut the much of the East River into seperate cities down around Lower Manhattan. Which make it hard to create a continuous bridge crossing over the river. I saw a CJ using the same map where the creator somehow got the Brooklyn Bridge to cross the entire span somehow connecting between the two cities.

Also, after discovering this stunningly accurate street layout of Manhattan; I've noticed some problematic small mistakes on my street layout in the Upper West Side. Annoyingly they aren't scaled correctly and are off somewhere west of Central Park West (I think my count was Manhattan blocks are 9 tiles in length going east to west in from Columbus Avenue to CPW) Is this correct? Needing a little help with this from a fellow urban planner. It's very apparent where Broadway merges with West End Avenue at 108th Street and the blocks between Riverside Drive and West End Avenue are too long srunching Broadway against Amsterdam Avenue from the 80's on up allowing only 2 tiles in length. That's off just from my walking around that area on there, seems like it should be more like 6 SC tiles in length.

I might have to demolish everything on the UWS so it's accurate and the avenues align with the neighboring cities 8th Avenue is misaligned in Harlem with the one on the UWS- a problem that would confuse motorists in the real world. :)

Will post pics once this is straight
