One of my coworkers had a PSP today- that thing is much cooler in person. I still won't buy one, though, even though it would be nice to be able to play games and movies on the go.

My only problem is that you'd end up spending so much money on things you already have. The UMD movies can only be played in a PSP, though I'll bet Sony will release a home theater system that plays them. I'd probably play more games if I bought them, but the PSP games are so similar to PS2 games I already have that I would feel like I am buying those all over again as well. Your thoughts?

To be totally honest I think the PSP's are a waste of money, you have to buy all of your games over. That is pointless. The PSP can break easily so why waste your money.

I would think saving my money up and waiting to buy a Ps3 is a much better choice than getting a PSP.

I don't really understand the posters above, I won't lie.
I bought a PSP on the day it came out, and dear God, it's the best investment I've ever made.
I love the games I have and only regret buying Twisted Metal.
(I also have Lumines - FREAKING AWESOME - Tiger Woods PGA Tour, Wipeout Pure, and Mercury.)
I bought a 512 MB memory stick for videos, as I already have a 40 GB MP3 player ... it's really spiffy.

-Memory stick sucks (2x price)
-UMD 45.gif45.gif
-4 inch screen without a protective cover (blame PDAs)

Until Sony learn that MStick and UMD sucks, I won't be buying anything that uses them... In fact, I won't be buying anything until my dream machine is in my hand... 44.gif

^ Can you elaborate a bit more? ^
I've heard it was pretty good ...

I don't really understand all this business about the PSP being easily-breakable.  What are you guys doing ... dropping it on the concrete face-down?

Hey I was wondering how much does a PSP cost?

Don't tell me to search google. If you tell everybody in this thread, it will save the time of searching google. 2.gif

Its amazing how far technology has gone. Its really unbelievable how they can stick graphics that good and so much memory into something so small. The microchips must be smaller then microscopic. They must be almost the size of bacteria. 18.gif

Another reason why I won't buy one is because kids at my school would really kill to get one. They would probaly try to steal one, and it being so small it could be easily stolen. I don't know about everyone else if they fill this way about the PSP.

Back when the PS2 came out, I had wanted to buy a DVD player for some time. Sure I also wanted a new game console, but I wasn't ready to spend the money for one. PS2 came out, with DVD player, it was perfect. It's even fair to say that when I got my PS2, I was getting a DVD player that also happens to play games.

Now, I've been thinking about getting a digital camera for quite some time now, and what should come out but the PSP, complete with digital camera. So again, I'm thinkin' ... do I get a free handheld console with the purchase of a new camera?
What I need to know, before I make this decision, is how good is the camera on this thing. I'd find it easier to deal with a crumby DVD player than a crumby camera.
Is it decent? Is there optical zoom levels? Is the picture quality OK?

If anyone could comment on this, I'd be mighty grateful!

The PS2 was also our first DVD player, though we were going to buy it anyway.

I think that Sony missed out an opportunity with the PSP. If I were them, I would have explored the notion of combining the efforts of the portable PSP and all-in-one PSX into one system.

This thing would be a large, portable system that would probably cost an arm and a leg. But, with all sorts of cool new technologies today, Sony could have created an all in one thingy that does everything. This is pretty much hypothetical.

First off, it would start its life as a portable version of the PS2. This would already require a pretty large footprint to house all the components, and all dimensions would have to accomodate a standard size disc. Then, since there will already be a powerful (for a portable) processor and big battery, might as well throw in a few nice features. First, why not a high quality digital camera. Also, instead of saving your pictures onto memory sticks, why not plop a 2.5 40GB hard drive in it as well. You'd need something to fill this storage space with, and nothing can fill a hard drive like MP3s. Also, since you'd want to be able to play your PS2 games online, there would be some form of wireless and probably also wired internet. This is not a huge step away from being a phone, so do that as well, and don't become exclusive to one cellular carrier.

Problems with it might include size and battery life, but I don't think they would bea huge issue. A portable CD player is pretty small, and a mega media thingy would of course be larger but not all that much larger. Batteries would probably not be a huge issue, either, because modern laptop batteries can power a 3,000MHz processor and a host of other components for almost two hours. A PS2 has a 300MHz processor, and mini hard drives use less energy than their full size counterparts.

Think about it: digital camera, PS2, MP3 player, DVD player, and communication device. This a wacky dream idea of course, but I'd pay $500 for one of these.

Why waste your money on a PSP? I would save up your money for the next-gen consoles. Don't let the PSP suck up your money!

IMO, wait for the new home consoles, or buy a DS!

In my opinion...handhelds are pointless. 99% percent of the time you are playing them in your house...where you could be playing the same games, only better, on a big TV.

...i worry about you? Surely then you cant buy anything small...like a mobile phone. My mobile cost over a grand and i still carry it around. People complaining about psp's breaking easily annoy me...throw a ds at a wall and im sure it'll break just as much as the PSP.

Ok I found out the price of a PSP is around 250 dollars. Pretty expensive, but I seen those things in action. The graphics are very very good for something so small.

Uh..NO. I buy handheld games for the unique experience. I never (almost never) buy a game for GameBoy that you can get for console. The DS for example, nearly every game is a unique game you can't get on a console. Wario Ware Touched and Yoshi Touch & Go, just can't work on a console. But you do have a point about the PSP. PSP is just PS2 remakes....

    ^I agree

For some reason, (when i was little (very little)), when i had my playstation 2 and my gameboy, i was still playing pokemon on game boy, rather then Grand theft auto 3 on PS2.  I just liked bieng able to lay on my bed and play it.  Also it did come in handy on long boring airplane rides and trips.

I think I'm going to get a PSP. Here are my reasons:

    1. Great gaming- Aside from SC4, I really only play sports games. The DS has very, very few sports games, while the PSP has lots of them. Plus, the graphics are much better. I don't have a PS2, and I'd rather have these games on a handheld than on a TV screen. It's much easier to play and use, and it can be taken just about anywhere.

    2. MP3 Player- I don't have an IPod or any other MP3 player. The PSP can hold and play many songs (Depending on your memory card size), making it a great MP3 player.

    3. Portable Movie Player- Many movies are coming out on the PSP in UMD format. For example, Napolean Dynamite is coming out in July. I can't wait to watch movies on a PSP.

In addition to those things, one can play PSP games against somebody else wirelessly. The PSP can also allow one to store and view .jpeg pictures, for example, along with many other file types. To top it all off, in the future, there may be an internet browser released for the PSP. 10.gif

I can't wait to get my hands on one.

PSP only has more sports games now because they are basically ports of PS2 games. The DS, they have to do a lot more with to make it compatible. It's more work to port a GameCube/N64 game to DS than PS2 to PSP. The DS will get its fair share of sports games eventually.

I went to the LRT today and saw a person listening to MP3s on his PSP with the LCD on, and that got me thinking -- why the hell can't you turn that blood sucking LCD off? Camcorders and camera can turn their LCD off (those with a viewfinder) to conserve battery and I am pretty sure PSP can benefit from that...

and yes, that thing is huge compared to my MuVoTXFM.

So you are not buying the DVD... or are you wasting money on both. 47.gif

What does a DVD have to do with anything? It's easier just to rent it anyways.

But I don't think you can rent movies that will be out on the PSP, so you have to buy them. I might be wrong though.

Still, if you don't like Napolean Dynamite, sucks for you. Almost everyone I know likes it, because it's a great movie. It's hillarious.

I wonder what kind of movies you watch then......14.gif

Napolean Dynamite has to be the stupidest movie I've ever seen. I can't believe I wasted ~2hrs of my life watching that garbage.

The point he was making was that, because the psp only reads UMDs, if you get the DVD, you will have to buy the movie again so you can watch it on your psp.

I'm not going to be wasting my money on a psp. Pretty much all the games are ports from ps2, and I already have an iPAQ that can take care of everything else the psp does.

Whether you like Napolean Dynamite or not is irrelevant.

The point is, the PSP is great for more than one thing. I got the PSP, and I couldn't be happier with it. The graphics are absolutely amazing. To me, it's much more fun to play then a console, even though I don't have a PS2.

Since I don't have a PS2, an MP3 Player or a Portable DVD Player, the PSP is perfect for me. It's hard to believe that such a powerful machine could be in handheld form. Getting a PSP is one of the smartest choices I've made in a while.

I don't think a PSP would be really cool because the screen is so small I rather play a PS2 because it is cheaper than a PSP and with a PS2 you can get a huge a  TV screen. A PSP would proobly be a little fun but not very much fun.
