Wait... how does mile 0 end up being in St Johns.... wouldn't that be in Victoria? Standard has distances measured from west to east. So St Johns is the end, not the beginning.

....also, wouldn't it be kilometer 0, not mile 0? I thought Canada was completely metric...

ummmm, there is alot if controversy over that lol, some say Victoria some say St.John's. Here we have a big sign advertising it right next to the appropriatly named "Mile One Stadium". I think both cities have their own story but meh, im just posting what the sign says

EDIT: Yes, Canada is metric but it is known as Mile 0, i guess kilometre 0 doesn't sound right....i don't really know

Its Mile 0 because thats where the Trans-Canada was first constructed. It was then built westward all the way to Victoria.

Its called Mile 0 because at the time it was built, Canada hadn't switched to the metric system yet, it used the old Imperial measurement until the 70s I think.

Ask and ye shall receive. 3.gif

The interchange between the New Jersey Turnpike and the Garden State Parkway, whole thing (NJTP left to top right, GSP bottom to top left):

Closeup of the aforementioned overpass:

Closeup of the toll plaza:

And since we're on the topic of wide highways, here's a bit south of there Along the Garden State Parkway. I count 17 lanes:

gspus9cu5.th.jpg

Though, technically this is actually two highways. The inner roadways are the Garden State Parkway, the outer roadways are US 9. So you may or may not want to count it.

You know, Duke, I'm surprised you haven't put Australia up on that list of yours you made last year. But that's probably because there isn't a big community of Aussie roadgeeks, as well as the fact that we don't have as dense a motorway system as the US does... 3.gif

Okay, I'll start with the F3 (which is about to be re-labled M1)... The freeway links Sydney with Newcastle, and forms part of the National Route network. However, the F3 ends at Wahroonga, about 25km from Sydney's CBD, and also doesn't connect with the Orbital Network. The F3 was originally planned to terminate at the west end of Sydney's CBD, but a case of NIMBY put an end to these plans. A second crossing of the Hawkesbury River is planned - the F3 is the only freeway going north. It is 127km long, began construction in 1963, and only finished in 1998 (work was done in stages).

It might be interesting to note that all the plans for Sydney's network was drawn up in 1910, with updates up till the County of Cumberland Scheme in 1955. Sydney is located in Cumberland County.

This shot shows a Variable Speed Limit gantry just before the Mooney Mooney bridge. You can see a speed camera just before it.

20070531mooneymooneyckvu9.jpg

Mooney Mooney Bridge. This bridge has those high railings, because it is a) about 170m above the creek it is named after, and b) is a high wind area (hence the wind sock over there). Caravans have been known to go flying in windy situations.

20070314freemanswaterhotb4.jpg

This section, up near Newcastle, was built in 1970. Would you believe that's the original road surface?

20070307minminewcastlelnb4.jpg

Bit of an oddity, really. The road surface here is a reddish colour, probably because of the sand used in the mixing of the concrete here.

Anyways, here's a shot of the Federal Highway. I quite like this shot...

20060720collectorcurrawdi5.jpg

This is probably the closest example to the RHW, except this one's concrete, not asphalt. 3.gif

02sevenhillsroadvq9.jpg

Sydney's newest motorway: the Westlink M7. It's a great road to drive on. It's also got no toll plazas, as all toll is collected electronically with the use of a eTag. There are three tags you can choose from - the RTA eTAG, the ROAM eWay, and EZPass. They will work anywhere in Australia that uses electronic tolling.

51endm71kmjd6.jpg

A typical toll gantry on the M7.

The last time I travelled the Pacific Highway, this wasn't built:

20070337karuahkq1.jpg

It's the Karuah Bypass, bypassing the small town of Karuah. Forms part of National Route 1. (currently signposted as A1)

Something random here:

Now that's the end of a quick education about freeways in NSW (and the last pic's from QLD).

Thanks Shadow_Assassin for showing eveyone that us Aussies don't just live on dirt roads in the outback. Great pictures from the northern highways.

I thought I'd include some pictures of the widest bridge in the world: Sydney Harbour Bridge, total width 49 metres.

sydneybridge.jpg

sydneybridge8.jpg

sydneybridge6.jpg

Construction began in 1923 with the demolishing of 800 homes. The construction of the bridge itself didn't begin until the end of 1928.

This oddity occurs because there's a section of I-95 through Mercer/Somerset Counies in NJ that was never built, so the highway has a weird gap in it. This will be remedied in the following years, though, through an interchange between the Pennslyvania turnpike and the Existing I-95. Then I-95 nirth of there would become part of I-295 and I-95 would take the PA Tpk over to meet the NJ Tpk.

where does the turnpike meet? i know the express way meets but not the turnpikequote>

Currently the NJ Tpk is I-95 as far south as Exit 7A. The aforementioned connection would bring that down to Exit 6. After the connection has been established, plans exist to duplicate the existing Delaware River Bridge there to allow 8 lanes over the river instead of just 4.

Oh i love Australia! And going on that Harbour Bridge was so awesome! Doesnt Sydney have another cool bridge, the ANZAC Bridge and then it turns into a tunnel? I wished Australia had a freeway kind of system connecting Melbourne to Sydney cuz boy that took A LONG TIME!

Now for Bay Area Freeways!

The world famous Golden Gate Bridge which is part of US 101

I-880 usually congested by East Bay traffic

A notorious traffic zone where traffic on 580 west comes from Central Valley as the suburbs extend out and get clogged with traffic from East Contra Costa County (concord, walnut creek) from the north and traffic from the south (San Jose)

580-680-interchange.jpg

And then to get away from the congestion is Highway 1 which snakes along the beautiful California coast

Here's some more pics from my local area. I love the Sea Cliff Bridge. Located just south of Sydney.

This is a picture looking south:

...and here it is looking north:

You can make out where the old road used to run. This is what happened:

So the council had to close and come up with something... Here's the grand opening of the bridge:

I live in Omaha, NE and currently they're finishing up a project called the WEST DODGE EXPRESSWAY....

it's a link to the current expressway out west of the interstate 680....   at least the express lanes.... 3 lanes going either direction on top of the 3 lanes in either direction of the current dodge road underneath of it....   here's an image of it at night - wesbound lanes (bridge is open) - but the eastbound isn't.... currently it is open ...just not in image.

219nzo2.jpg

here's an image in downtown Omaha, where the 480 interchange with the north freeway are coming up....

the intersection is now under reconstruction to increase bandwidth and to change standards of the interchange .... i believe the left turn exits will be removed since they were designed in the 50's?

img0972tu2.jpg

i will have more later ....

I don't know what's got me onto this but it's fun... I've been researching Australia's longest straight road...

coolroad2.jpg

It claims on the net that it's also the world's longest straight road. Can anyone confirm this for me? There has to be a longer road somewhere...

I wished Australia had a freeway kind of system connecting Melbourne to Sydneyquote>

Actually, there is a freeway that links Sydney and Melbourne. It's the Hume Highway (Hume Freeway in Victoria). In the Sydney Metro area, the Hume Freeway turns into the M5 Motorway. There's also the Princes Highway, but that hasn't been duplicated all the way south to the Victorian border. However, it's not considered freeway-standard, as there are at-grade intersections (which don't bother people much, since they're very little-used).

This is a picture of the M31 (Hume Highway), northbound at Yerrinbool.

200604_021_yerrinbool.jpg

200604_032_mittagong.jpg

This bridge was actually rebuilt after subsistence (due to abandoned coal mines below this area).

200604_060_suttonforest.jpg

A sign with Melbourne on it. 3.gif

Even though there's a freeway-grade link between Sydney and Melbourne, in some areas, it's dual-carriageway, due to at-grade intersections (at these points, precedence is given to through-traffic, not the traffic waiting at the side road. There are no traffic lights on these intersections).

By the way, 90 Mile Straight's on the Eyre Highway, crossing the Nullarbor Plain. It is Australia's longest straight road, and the world's longest straight road. Truckies talk of 'white-line fever' where they steer off the road, losing all sense of direction because it  seems to go on forever in a straight line.

As for travelling the Sturt Highway, it is one of the few highways in Australia that has no speed limit. However, you have to be careful of this...

You are advised not to go too fast at night. That's when the wildlife come out to play. Hit a bug at a high enough speed and it can crack your windscreen.quote>
