People often post pics of their cities mass transit systems, or their skyscrapers. something nobody ever likes to show is their cities highways. Sure, we dont like them, they are ugly, and they are responsible for a whole bunch of problems with our cities, but they are a major aspect of many of our daily lives, and you cant go far without seeing one.

So lets see em....

Im sorry i could not get any pictures of my town's highways, but just to describe it its a basic 2 lane each way with grassy median and frontage roads.

So instead i'll just show some important freeways around texas:

i10_looking_west_from_washington_22-may-

HOUSTON:This is the Katy Freeway(Interstate 10). In this pic it looks rather nice, but now its backed up with traffic and under construction to become what will be the widest road in the world. 24 lanes total i think.

bw8_290_1.jpg

HOUSTON:The monster stack interchange at the Sam houston tollway and US 290. one of the biggest anywhere.

i10_dd_drivers_view_sb_at_frio_exit_2-se

SAN ANTONIO: Semi-Double decker freeway, part of I-10 i think.

central_2.jpg

DALLAS:Central Expressway.

85_paisano_on_border_jaurez_shantytown_f

EL PASO: not really a freeway, its Paisano road, and its weird how when you look over to the right you can see the mexican slums.

Highways are amazing... maybe im just crazy, but sometimes it is just amazing to think how they can build these amazing structures without, if you think about it, that much disruption in the daily flow of traffic. They really are an amazing site to see, especially when placed in a well designed infrastructure. Houston has one of the best highway layouts in the country, with two full loops and 8 cardinal spokes (N:I-45, NW:H-290, W:I-10, SW: H-59, S:H-288, SE:I-45, E:I-10, NE:H-59), you can get pretty much anywhere in a reasonable amount of time (it is a very sprawled city). There are definitely a couple of flaws in the system (left hand onramps/exits come to mind as total traffic killers), but usually everything keeps flowing (however slow). Houston is the 4th largest city, and it was recently ranked 16th in a list of cities with the worst traffic. Not too shabby if you ask me.

Anyway, all of Houston's freeways are on display at www.houstonfreeways.com, including updated pictures on all the construction around town, even the infamous katy freeway (yep... gonna be 24 lanes wide including the feeders, 4 lane feeders, 6 mainlanes, and 2 toll lanes in each direction -- in places between the beltway and 610). [schematics can be found on the katyfreeway.org website (click on 'program overview', then 'schematics')]

I live next to memorial park inside the loop (I-10 west & I-610), and yeah Im pretty much a highway freak (I have the houston freeways book that is now out of print), its pretty interesting stuff. I regularly drive down the katy freeway to play golf with a buddy at bear creek, so I get to be in the construction while it is happening. Its amazing how one day, the lanes will be completely on the other side of an overpass than the next.

I just wish that simcity would have some sort of way to 'design' your own highway (sort of like the way roller coaster tycoon 3 was if you've ever played it). Theres nothing better than a totally out of the ordinary interchange (i.e. I-45 & I-10, well pretty much the entire I-45 and I-10 corridor downtown). I wanna be able to do that in simcity! oh well, wishfull thinking strikes again.

Yeah, it would've been cool if they had put an interchange builder into the game, but they'll never do it because it makes too much sense. It'd eat up a lot of extra hard drive space too, as every single interchange would now be unique. Someone could probably try building it as an expansion though.

    P.S. - UH area, I-45 and Spur 5 here

Here are a few pics of the Thurway exits near me:

22: Typical rural thruway exit. Simple trumpet with a toll:

    Exit 22

Exit 23: This exit gets you onto 9W or 787 heading towords the Dunn Interchange (See below). It's a complete mess during rush hour. It's also placed so that durring the winter the sun goes right in your eyes during most of morning rush hour.:

    i87-i787-us9w-2004.jpg

Exit 24: The biggest and most complicated exit in the area. Connects the thruway(87 and 90) to "Freebie 90" and the Northway (87). Incredibly congested almost all the time. It confuses the heck out of people who don't know it, because you have to take an exit to stay on the highway with the same number. At the bottom end of the picture, you can see part of Crossgates Mall, the exit for which has a crash almost daily. This picture offers a better view of the mall, all the way at the bottom.

    i87-i90-2004.jpg

This is the part of the Interchage for the Dunn bridge and Epire State Plaza that fell almost a year ago.

most of Estern and southern Europe dont have highways, portugal have been building theirs over the past couple of years. The uk have lots of motorways though they are always congested and you end up going slower on the m25 then if you used a country lane.

This is an European style of highway

European highways are more beautiful and  better in quality than American highways.

In case you're wondering what the stupid abstract sculptures are meant to represent, the yellow stick in the Cheesestick, the red rows of sticks are the Toastracks. And you can barely see the cheesegrater, the bridge between the two toastracks. I personally think its a waste of materials and money, but people seem to like those.
