I need a way to prevent incomming commuter traffic from taking a specific road.  Now, i could just get rid of the road, but that kind of messes with local traffic.  mainly id like to know if anyone could make a 'commuter blocker' or a 'local only' traffic peice.  ill post a screen shot of the problem in a bit (if i didnt explain it clearly enough)

That would be a good idea! I'm tired of having to put the 'No Truck' thing on every street to get the trucks to stay out of the residential area!

Interesting topic.  Never thought of this before.  What would be the purpose or need of restricting incoming traffic from utilizing the currently loaded city's avenues ( or particular avenues)?  Id like to see if I should use this concept in my cities.   Again, very interesting log!

I have this problem when commuters take the shortest path rather than the quickest path. (There is a mod for this which causes your sims to take quickest path...it may be an optional part of the NAM, but I can't remember...it will slow down the game however) Such as the commuters will exit the freeway and drive a crowded avenue or road and re-enter the freeway when they could've stayed on the freeway and saved time.

heres an actual example, in this map ive got an island with alot of low density res and farms, theres only one bridge off the island, and the bridge feeds into a big city. im trying to funnel all the people on the island over the bridge and into the city.

    ---------

this is a situation in which i connect two parallel roads

the commutor traffic comes in from the west, i want them to stay on the road and go east. when the road is connected to the south to east road, they end up going south, which is actualy a longer trip (plus there arent any jobs down there, they just end up driving around for ever). im guessing that even though the trip is longer, the connection to the other city is closer to where they enter, so they'll try and go there no matter what.

this second pic is when i break the road connection

this is what i want. now, maybe there is a mod that can help me out with this and i dont know about it (very possible)

there are still other examples where a way to block commuter traffic would help out alot.

Yeah, I have a similar problem like Edwards, I have a freeway that connects a city to the airport (which is in a different city), but all the traffic uses a two-lane road until the last exit before the border of the airport city, which is real aggrivating cause I have a six lane expressway which goes from downtown to the airport and beyond and gets NO TRAFFIC!

Unfortunately you might be boned here. Commuter circles are very tough to fix because the simiulator looks for the shortest route to jobs in distance not time so it ignores things like capacity of the road and the speed. Unfortunately, the shortest route to jobs is often a neighbour connection. Even with the NAM's perfect pathfinding, neighbour connections, because of the way the game treats them, still suck up traffic. I would suggest a few things.

    1. If you're not planning on building anything to the North take that road and streatch it towards the Northern edge of the map so that when the commuters come to the road that heads towards the southern connection, it'll be a longer drive in distance than it would be for them to get to the Eastern side.

    2. Zone some commercial or industrial on the western edge so that the commuters end their journey in this city.

    3. Accept the commuter circle and its evil and build a road south before your community so that the sims don't commute down local streets.

    4. Cut the connection so that they can't commute south. You could still build this city without separating it into two pieces. Just use the NAM to make overpasses over the West/East commuter road so that they never have the option to head South.

    5. Make the west/east road a tunnel so that its out of sight and the sims don't have the option to get off it and make nuisances of themselves by heading South.

    6. If you don't want to alter the aestetics of what you're building, do nothing and accept things as they are.
