yes, rails must touch directly to the stations. Also, the turns are now different with rails. you must first make a diagonal, and then turn it. I hope someone else can explain it better...

You also need to have multiple stations, obviously. Some in residential areas where people can get on, and some in industrial/commercial areas where they can get off.

Also, I think simizens prefer to use heavy rail for intercity travel. The best bet is to connect two cities with rail and then you will see use (if you want to guarantee use, do not connect the cities with roads).

without a pic of what you have done already then my answer will have to be broad:  make sure you have stations in both residential areas and the work areas (comm, industry, or both).  if they get on at a station they have to get off at a station too.

make sure that the rail is touching one side of the station and the road/street/avenue is touching the other side.  the stations come with some limited parking so you should not need a parking garage.

you may want to try putting a bus stop next to the station if the station is in a more remote area.  this way the sims can take the bus to the station and then take the train to work.

Any one of the four side is fine to place the rail along. Or a road, just have both. And place the busstop at least one tile away from the station or you might find sims taking a short cut thru the bus stop to the train, raising it's useage numbers when not actually traveling on them. Have fun!

I think it's not being used because it's just quicker for sims to go to work by car or even to walk than to take the train.

The network technically seems fine, I'd just add a few bus stations by the train stations and around town.

one experiment you can try is to delete all routes to the industrial stations except via rail. then the sims will have no choice but to use it. if they still dont use it then something is definately buggy. if they do use it then clamor_m was right. also, remember to give the simulator a few game months to catch up to what you plop down. the traffic simulator does not update very often so you have to let things simmer every once in a while.

<edit>  also, not that I look at your pic more, I dont see any stations actually in the res zones.  The stations need to be IN the RES and IND zones or the sims have no reason to use them.  also, make sure to make a neighbor connection with your rail or the industry wont use the shipping center at all.  hope that helps </edit>

oh and no offence shivsood but please no LEET! lol 4.gif

Just noticing in that image that the train station is located on the far side of the industrial zones, and hence all the roads are closer. The other station visible is also in the middle of an industrial zone. I'd guess this is why no one is using the rails, as Sims have a habit of just looking at the shortest route distance-wise rather than speed-wise.

Rails are kind of tricky. Sims are car-polluting idiots that need it to be closer than driving on the road. I still don't know how a rail station could get 0 usage in real life.
