Coming back after 10+ years, a few short questions
Unmei replied to Unmei's topic in SimCity 4 General Discussion
Apparently I am a bad trainer, haha. No matter what I tried, the game kept loading the standard, and even slow, card settings. So instead I simply copied the settings for high and overwrote those of low and standard with them. Interestingly, when I check the config log after running the game, the Rules and Options sections seem to indicate everything is using the max quality options, but if I then check the finer details under Properties, I notice slight discrepancies. In Graphics Rules.sgr, under Shadows, shadowQuality is set to 5 (which is what the $High options defaulted to), but in the config log, the same flag says the game actually sets the shadow quality to 2. In fact, no matter what I set the shadowQuality to in the Graphics Rules, the game seems to keep that flag set to 2. So either I'm not fully understanding the logic behind the settings, or they are lying to me. Though Occam's Razor would indicate the former. Still, the game seems to run quite a bit better than it initially did and as I'm probably going to slowly install some new graphics mods and the like over time, this might not be as big an issue as I might suspect. Should probably stop tweaking for the time being and actually play the game though. I'm getting flashbacks to modding Elder Scrolls games, where I spent more time modding those than actually playing, heh. -

I was actually just about to edit my post on this. Turns out it was the SC4 launcher that did this. I've since stopped using it, and have started using the launch paramaters instead. Seems to do the trick, as far as the resetting graphic options file goes, at any rate. I also stumbled across this topic, which suggested adding a line to the config file, disabling vertex buffers. That seems to have eliminated the choppy scrolling/panning I had earlier, making for a much smoother experience altogether. Lastly, I found out that I needed to add the manufacturer to the cardIdentity string and now the config log clearly indicates my 2070 Super as the GPU... but I still for the life of me cannot get it to use the Fast Card settings for some reason. -

That works, I was just hoping I could further speed it up. But if this is as fast as it goes, so be it It also seems to be a bit choppy, at least compared to that of some YT vids I've skimmed through over the past day or two. It doesn't seem to be: I've added my card to the Video Cards.sgr file succesfully, but when I try to add it to the Graphics Rules.sgr file, it gets removed after running the game. Clearly I'm making a mistake somewhere, but I'm not sure quite where. I have an Nvidia Geforce 2070 Super, so I added card 0x1e84 "GeForce RTX 2070 SUPER" to the list of Nvidia vendor cards in Video Cards.sgr Then in the Graphics Rules.sgr file, under the header partialRule "Fast card" -any, I added stringMatch cardIdentity "GeForce RTX 2070 Super" From what I can tell, that should be right. But when I save the file, run the game, then check the file again, the line I added got removed. Any ideas? Thanks! Will read it in a bit. -

Hey there! Didn't see a dedicated help thread, so hopefully this is allowed. Haven't been around these parts in a good while I'm looking into getting back into SC4 and after a couple of hours of tweaking, I think I've got it running properly on modern hardware. Couple of things I'd like to check with you guys before committing, though: Since I haven't played in ages, I doubt it's a good idea to let myself be overwhelmed by installing literally all the mods, so I've stuck to what seem to be the most essential bug-fixes and the like, along with NAM. Can I add mods for graphic overhauls and/or additional buildings to an ongoing region, or will that cause problems? I've noticed that scrolling the city map is exceedingly slow. Is there a way to speed that up in an .ini file or something? Once I set the game to Win XP compatibility, I can run it in DirectX mode. Would adding my GPU to the list of recognized cards still do anything? Or can I skip that step? CAM or not to CAM? If I understand it correctly, it smooths out the growth curve of RCI zones, but it doesn't play too nice with a lot of user-made content? For example, I've installed the Less Abandonment tweak, that tweaks the land value/desirability requirement for $$$-wealth buildings, but I imagine these things would overlap? Thanks in advance~
