  1. Hey. So I had some questions after coming back to my mega-region. Its going nicely, although it took me a couple minutes to familiarize myself with it after being away or so long. I was playing Simcity 4 for like a year, from 2012 to early 2013. I was just starting to learn the ropes of mods, and have quite a few custom growable buildings installed. But unfortunately I stopped and am now trying to re-learn the ins and outs of modding. So a couple questions -- -- If the darknite mod is in my plugin folder, does that mean it is already installed? I can't tell if it is installed or not, but I would prefer to remove it. I suspect the darknite mod is activated... Do I have to start a new city? Or can I remove it and leave the city intact? -- Same goes for NAM, if it is in my plugin folder does that mean it is already installed? -- It just started very recently, I was playing the game for a day without this happening. But now for some reason whenever I zone, the colors are very bright. It helps with visibility, at night, but I would prefer to remove it. Whats strange is that, looking at the transportation map on the region level, my one city I've been working on is highlighted, while the ones I haven't worked on are normal. Thanks in advance.. P.S. Lol apparently N. O. O. B. is a curse word on here. Its okay if I call myself one though, right? ahaha

Question -- I realize the NYBT is listed as a dependency, but is it really necessary?  Can I just download the NYBT buildings without having to deal with the NYBT mods?
  3. Again, they are lying to your face when they say they will implement certain things down the road. In other games they have taken out key features and said they will address it later, only to never do so.
  4. I believe they should have started with an graphically updated SimCity 4 and worked from there. I mean the possibilities are absolutely endless. There are SO many things that they could have done. But what do they do? Oh, they invent a new good looking engine that limits them to about 4 to 5 city blocks other wise your computer would explode. Guess what other game has good looking graphics and an engine that totally destroyed the scale and sophistication of the earlier games.... Battlefield. The early ones had realistic aircraft and maps that would stretch literally for miles. The new one is basically a little bigger than Call of Duty, which, for people who haven't played either of them, has maps the size of your garage. I guess it's just a coincidence that the same thing happened to two totally different games and two totally different genres. Oh wait... I'm saying this because this is the problem I have with EA. I dont care about all the other marketing tricks they're using to scam people.... EA now = build good looking games but do not develop them, people will spend the money anyway.
  5. Crashes to Desktop

Wow well for some reason after reinstalling its working now... I feel stupid lol. I think maybe there were some files that I had to delete, because reinstalling multiple times did not do the trick until I cleared absolutely everything related to SC4 off the computer. Perhaps one of the regions was corrupted somehow? Thank you anyways though, it's great that at least somebody has some expertise in these matters. I'm on windows 7, using a lenovo laptop. I guess I'll come back if I need help... its okay for the time being though. And command line? Do you mean the "target" in properties? Here it is "C:\Program Files (x86)\Maxis\SimCity 4 Deluxe\Apps\SimCity 4.exe"
  6. Crashes to Desktop

I appreciate your help, and I'm not trying to be rude, just a little frustrated. Again, I have ZERO plugins. I have not modified the game at all. Every version I have been running has been doing the intro screen and crashes to desktop instead of loading the region. It has always been crashing ever since I started playing on this laptop, the last day I played a week or so ago it crashed probably 3 or 4 times in one night. I do not recall doing anything to the system. It is just frustrating because something is obviously very wrong with it but I have literally searched on dozens of sights and NOTHING is helping. There was once I actually loaded the game, after installing, but after that it went back to not loading the region. Here's my report if your interested, I'll probably just give up after a couple more days of this. Exception time: 01/27/2013, at 11:54:44. Exception code: 0xC0000005 (-1073741819) ACCESS_VIOLATION. 7. I have totally had it with EA. For those of you who are giving them the benefit of the doubt, well do what you will. The best I can do is spread my message, which is, for several years now I have seen most of my favorite series slowly but surely degenerate into watered down, empty versions of their past selves. This reboot might be perfectly okay and satisfactory, for a REBOOT, but just be prepared to leave the simcity you knew and loved behind forever. There will be no explanations, no communication with the long-time fanbase, there will only be stone cold silence, resistance to correct any mistakes or listen to any criticism, no matter how obvious or constructive. It is how EA has been operating for years now. This is the last straw for me... I refuse to buy into the idea of an always online Simcity that has been turned into a social media experiment. Many people are saying "well, it might only be optional, I'm sure they have devoted resources to where they needed to go". That couldn't be further from the truth. They are directing much needed and LIMITED resources and finances to implement these untested and already unpopular marketing gimmicks. I saw it with my all-time favorite series, Battlefield, and now it has happened to simcity. Expect drop-dead gorgeous visuals, and incredibly watered down and simplistic gameplay. That is all I can say and I hope those of you who actually spend money on this have realistic expectations.
  8. Crashes to Desktop

Hey guys.... its me again. I deleted origin completely. Bought the digital version off of amazon with one of my gift cards. Did the -cpucount:1 thing. Changed the compatibility to XP service pack 2, as well as running in adminstrator mode. Still isn't working. Whats driving me nuts is the fact that its been crashing on and off for the past year I've been playing it, but now, for some reason, its not even loading the region anymore. It just does the intro video and crashes directly to desktop. Could someone help me out here? I downloaded the patch from SC devotion. Should I post the report thing?
  9. Crashes to Desktop

Yes Moose, I've just realized how stupid it was of me to use Origin. I've tried looking on all their help forums, and the best I could find is a mod saying "we no longer support this game, contact so and so to start a petition to have it supported again" I originally had it on steam, which was another problem in itself. Then my PC broke and could not access my account on the laptop I'm currently using (its a long story). I did not know of the standalone download version -- I much rather prefer to get my games the legal way as opposed to pirated versions. Believe me though, using origin at all was a last resort, Simcity 4 is currently the only game I've got on this computer. Thank god I also have an xbox360. Question -- its possible for me to just copy and paste my old region from the origin version into my new game, is it not?
  10. Crashes to Desktop

I cannot find the box called target. edit-- actually I found it, it says "Simcity 4" and doesn't let me change anything. I recently updated origin and now it's crashing to desktop before it even loads my region. I have not modified the game in any way shape or form. I've just about had it with this crap.... I do not know why I bother playing it sometimes. It should not take me hours upon hours of trying to fix this stuff MULTIPLE TIMES. For the record, I've already changed it from multicore to single core. I am playing on origin FYI
  11. Thanks for the well written posts, wasn't available to reply yesterday as my friend was in the ER for 6 hours. This is the third or fourth "mega region" I've done. I think my largest city was 2 million. So I'm not totally inexperienced, I just wanted to clarify specifically what was going on. I am just slightly insecure, because my last region was doing pretty good however in the process I made some reckless design decisions that came back to haunt me later. This one has the potential to be the best city I've ever made, so I'm just double checking, lol. Speaking of education, crime, health, etc... I am pretty good on those. I've got plenty of k-12 schools, 1 university and a main library. Some of them have a thousand students, some of the have under 100. I'm guessing high wealth residents have very few kids, whereas low wealth has many? Because for many areas with lots of people there are hardly any kids going to elementary school. Also, does anyone know why one of my hospitals keeps going on strike when I have more doctors than patients? Thx for the tips...
  12. Hey Simtropolis. Second post here. After messing with my other big city I decided to start a new one. This time I've pretty much nailed the layout of it, however constructive criticism is always welcome seeing as many of you have been playing this for a lot longer than I have. Any advice is appreciated! I posted a question here a couple of weeks back about the right layout for streets/avenues and I've found one that seems to work pretty well. I've got about 70,000 residents on a large map and about half commercial and half industrial. All low density at this point, I have learned from past experience it is easier for me to "build out" before I start messing around with skyscrapers. I've divided every usable piece of land on the map (besides the river) into 5 by 5 squares, with interchanging avenues and two lane "access roads". I basically started off with residential and a large dirty/manufacture industry sector. As I expanded, I began to add commercial property and high tech industries only in areas that needed jobs. The result is that I've finally built out the entire city, but the vast majority of commercial areas have low customers. I figured that was okay for the time being, as long as they're providing jobs for the area, as well as being conveniently located by the clusters of high tech industry. Also, avg income is around 70 k. Now to my question. I've reached the point where I need to begin zoning for medium and high density properties, but am kind of unsure as to how to go about this. Should I place the medium residential zones in the center of the map, where I'd prefer to have my "downtown" and commercial areas in the future? Or should I zone closest to the industrial area, a little closer to the edge? Furthermore, will my choice of street layout screw up everything because of too many intersections? Should I zone medium residential or commercial first? How many medium zones should I have before I begin high density? And the question of high tech. I know from past experiences taxing the heck out of dirty/manufacturing industry and then replacing it with high tech is a good way to clean the city up. Should I place the dirty industry outside the borders of the map in the other cities in the region? Should I do this before or after I begin zoning for medium and high density residential? Thx
  13. Question about avenues

No, I have not downloaded any mods. I know I should, but I'm afraid I'll screw something up. Thanks for the answers.
  14. Hey I'm new here, sorry if I'm supposed to search but I couldn't find an answer anywhere. Anyway, I'm trying to build a massive city with inside one of the large zones. I've got about 60,000 people using the subway, 40,000 using the ferry which is connected to other regions, but my roads are reaching the point of being completely clogged. What is the most efficient grid pattern for using roads? Is it possible for me to use ONLY avenues instead of just two lane roads? I tried using only avenues in one corner of the map and am unsure if it is doing any good, there seem to be too many intersections.
