Future of SimCity Official Discussion Thread
kujoe replied to Compromise's topic in SimCity 4 General Discussion
I really like a lot of the suggestions in this thread. I like the idea of police/fire/hospital/educational jurisidictions. It would be awesome to define an actual "city limits" and as needed the city could annex more land just like in Real Life. I also believe that having a city/county/state levels would be a huge improvement. We also need to fix the power system to a more realistic system. I even want to see transmission lines with proper connections to power plants. The transmission lines should also run to sub-stations at which they get split down into distribution power lines that go to homes and businesses. These distribution lines should be available above and below ground like in real life. Also, I hate building an unrealistic number of schools, fire stations, police stations, and hospitals just to give all my sims adequate coverage. In real life, even in big cities the city merely hires more workers and vehicles and assigns them to patrol or be available for certain areas. In such cases where an area grows too big a sub-station is built, and "precincts" are even established. Look at NYC for example. Even the City of Austin, TX has Precincts and patrol districts. However one thing that I've seen a lot of people request that I disagree with is having to have a visable water source for water pumps. This is innacurate. You do not always have to have a visible water source. There is ALWAYS an underground water table that can be tapped. What really makes this even more possible is underground aquifers. Take for example the Edwards Aquifer that provides water for most of Texas. I want curved roads, and conforming property lines. I don't want EVERY zone to be the same exact size. I have double the lot size of my neighbor, but he has a bigger home. I have more land, and a 1 story house, but he has less land and a 2 story house. I'd like to see more in the way of road and rail transportation. More realistic railways in which trains travel both directions on the SAME EXACT set of tracks. There is a reason sections have 2 sets of tracks side by side attached to a switch. I'd also like to have more flexibility in road/street types. In some big cities there are 8 lane roads, that are still regulated with stop lights. I want to be able to have these in SimCity. I also want to be able to have a country dirt road up to a rural ranch house and be able to seamlessly integrate all road/street types without messing up other areas. I want all emergency services to be able to handle crisis on their own unless I can choose to take control. I also want city advisors to be able to be more proactive, and even have a possibly elected city council. I really love the developer/sub-division ideas. I would love to have a lot more control over the economy too. That's all I can think of for now, I'll chime in more later when I'm less sleepy. -
Date: 1/14/2006 11:09:51 AM Author: ducksberry Keep in mind, though, TTDI's consume a lot of space in SC4 (and often in real life). I can really only see them useful in a suburban city.quote> Actually that is not very accurate. I live in the Austin area which is the capital of Texas, and is a very big metropolitan area and the TTDI is used even in downtown austin, living closely among the skyscrapers. In some tight areas they still have a TTDI but they squeeze it together to take up less space, so there is no median in the middle. This type of application is far from suburban, as it is even in use in Metropolitan locations as well all over Texas. Places such as Dallas and Fort Worth, San Antonio, El Paso, and even Houston Texas have TTDI intersections, and all of the cities listed are huge metro areas. But you know what they say... Everything is bigger in Texas.

Hey Jernoi, I love this CJ, I just have one question though. On your 6th update, on this page, https://www.simtropolis.com/idealbb/view.asp?mode=viewtopic&topicID=68274&num=30&pageNo=19#637763 in figure 6.06 you have a boat ramp, where did you get that, and can I get it, or is it available somewhere?

Intersections screwing up badly. (New Nam??)

Date: 10/10/2005 4:49:34 PM Author: Bones1 Date: 10/10/2005 3:02:12 PM Author: kujoe So how does one explain that it fixed itself without me doing anything? Are you saying that the intersection problem went away all by itself? Sorry, I don't believe that. You had to be making the intersection wrong, if it didn't work previously. Either that, or something did change such as removing a plugin or something. But anyway, I'm glad everything is working for you now. EDIT: One more thought.... Sometimes, intersections can't be made because the terrain underneath is not even. If you're having problems making intersections, try flattening the ground around the area, and try again.quote>That's exactly what I'm saying. It fixed itself without me doing anything. It was working fine up until a few days ago, then it was acting up, and now it's working fine again. No new plugins, nothing removed, absolutely nothing changed. It fixed itself. Hence why I said I think my PC is possessed. -

Most of the plugins are stored under 'My Documents', which is user-specific.quote>I already said the issue is fixed. It's one computer, one profile. quote> You didn't say the issue was fixed. You said your computer is possessed. That's fixed??? Why is everyone assuming I'm stupid? I program and build computers for a living, I know my way around a PC. quote> It seems you're the only one having this problem. Thus, it's logical to assume it's because of 'user error', and not a problem with the NAM. Just because you have a problem with the game or some plugin conflict, doesn't mean we assume you're stupid. Don't be so sensitive, we're just trying to help you narrow down the problem.quote> If you carefully read my post above I stated: But guess what, today I loaded the game up, still acting weird. I quit to come read email and check up on here, load the game back up, and now it just randomly works, with no changes being done to the game or plugins at all.quote>Although I could see how you think it still doesn't work for me. Anyhow, a lot of these problems are not necessarily user error. Things like this could happen just because files get corrupted, or new files don't play nice with the game, etc.. It's not safest to automatically assume user error. It's safest to explore all options. Maybe the game is messed up? Maybe the files are bad? I do tech support for all my clients, and if I just assumed it was user error, even if I knew it was, they would feel offended and I'd not have their support contract anymore. I'm not being sensitive, I'm being professional. -

What a lot of you people are assuming, is that I didn't install it properly, or that I did something wrong. I am not computer illiterate and I know what I'm doing. Everything was working perfectly, then one day it just randomly stopped working perfectly. But guess what, today I loaded the game up, still acting weird. I quit to come read email and check up on here, load the game back up, and now it just randomly works, with no changes being done to the game or plugins at all. I swear my PC is possessed. -

I'm posting here because this only happened after getting the new most recent NAM. But I can't be sure it IS the nam's fault. Anyhow, I'm having a problem making a certain type of intersection. I used to always be able to easily make this type of intersection in Figure A. Figure A: To make this I would just drag a road from the only one side of the avenue. However, lately, I cannot make this type of intersection at all. Whenever I try to make the type of intersection illustrated in Figure A, it forces me to make one like in Figure B instead. Figure B: Also, when doing the avenue/highway perpindicular highway ramps, on the new NAM versions, there is this bright green texture that shows up on all zoom levels, as shown in Figure C. Figure C: Can anyone please help me with my intersection issues? I'm willing to do whatever I can as a test dummy to help anyone in testing fixes, or whatever I need to do to get this fixed. Thanks!

Goldiva, could I PLEASE get your water mod? I've tried all the other ones I've found all over the place. Pegs, timotheus4, all of them, and none of them are the exact color I'm looking for. But your water mod is the EXACT one I'm looking for. Can I please have it??!!!

Real Highway (RHW) - Development and Support
kujoe replied to qurlix's topic in NAM & Transit Networks
Date: 9/16/2005 10:19:46 AM Author: hairmetal4ever Actually there are two types of rural highways in the US that look like this. The most common are the ones we've been discussing, 2 or 3 lanes each direction, with interchanges, similar to what we've been exploring here and the pictures of the US, Canadian, and European ones that everyone has been posting pictures of. The second type is also divided but at intersections instead of interchanges there are just regular crossings, but often no traffic light as the cross roads have little traffic. Almost like an avenue except with no 'development' right along them. An example near where I live would be US Route 30 between Canton and Mansfield, Ohio, or Route 40 between Columbus and Springfield, Ohio. If these highways go into a more urban area they often convert to the 'regular' interchange type mentioned in my first paragraph.quote> That's exactly what I've been trying to say. In some very rural areas of the US, even interstate highways come to a regular 4 way intersection with stop signs. In a lot of cases people's driveways let out right onto the interstate. One example I can remember is Interstate 35 in far South Texas. This is one of the most MAJOR highways in the US that goes all the way from the mexican border up to canada.- 3,919 Replies

Real Highway (RHW) - Development and Support
kujoe replied to qurlix's topic in NAM & Transit Networks
Ok, well I see what you're saying, maybe a more simple alternative would be something such as this intersection right here. http://maps.google.ca/maps?q=luling,+tx&ll=29.650782,-97.660282&spn=0.004154,0.007522&t=k&hl=en In this google map you can see one of the most major highways in the Southern united states, it goes from california to florida, and how it connects to another highway crossing it. Both are in a basic rural setting, however I-10 is a major interstate and 183 is a major state expressway as well. This is more or less the diamond type setup. 2 major highways meetup in this manner in just about most highway intersections that are not in a major city that I see. Is something like that possible?- 3,919 Replies
