Hey to all just recently found these forums, cant believe all the time playing sc4 & didn't bother to look for forums for it, this place is my mecca! i have the deluxe edition & both offical patches installed. no mods. its not a tech issue so won't bother bragging about pc specs. new pc ready for bf3 Ive had a few good cites over the years, my biggest pop was about 700k on one square with 3 connected surrounding cites with about 40k in each. One of the problems i have most is with abandonment of R buildings due to commute time. I had several tries at using highways, avenues, bus stops & subways and was only moderately successful in dealing with these. But after reading several posts here it seems there are several bugs in the original game. My commute time graph showed a commute time between 50 & 70 most of the time. After building my new rig & reinstalling sc4 im going to have another crack at getting to 1Mill pop so if ppl have hints or stratergies for managing my road & mass transit system better id love to hear them! also could someone explain what exactly is broken with the commute time & which of the transport mods are best at fixing them please? Id also like to pick your swell headed brains about connecting cities up. when i built my biggest city i moved the garbage & power out to the surrounding squares but could never get them to make money or have enough of the required achivements to get the bigger power stations able to feed all my cities needs. so any tips or techniques for best conectivity im all ears! Im just about to start from scratch so when ive got a decent pop ill post some pics to show how ive been doing stuff & hopefully you lot can point out where im going wrong! and moose i really like the idea of being able to have residential & commercial mixed together, is there a mod that makes that possible?

i agree dude, this forum is very cool! no trolls lurking around here. as for the n o o b thing im not bothered if ppl call me that. just gives me more satisfaction when i get my vet staus. more talking about fps there tho. But back to sc4. I'm not sure i really want any mods, more cos i don't think ive really reached the end of what the vanilla game limits you too. the only thing im experimenting with is all the help you guys have given me with transit management. so far ive managed to fill the big square on the new york region & have a pop of about 50k. now comes the rezoning & higher densities & where i normally hit trouble. but fingers crossed should be able to cope with the traffic better!!

But please don't consider me a $%&^!, i feel i got a good grasp of things in sc4. i am nowhere near some of the levels ive seen in here tho, especially when it comes to the add on mods. the thing that i struggle with tho is just planning, management & execution of my transit systems. be it roads, where to build bus stops or the best way to join up highways. One thing i have learnt from reading thru some of the threads is about not using grids in the R zones. i always used to place rough grids all thru my city but traffic problems became mega. now im experimenting with avenue trunk roads in the centre & lots of streets with cul de sacs in the R zones. it really seems to help! forcing the sims to take proper routes. But my city is still quite small atm so i'll have to wait & see. Just out of interest, what would you lot say an average commute time is in a city over 100k pop? my last one was about 60 on the commute graph I had to edit & add this. n 0 0 b gets censored out! made me laugh

I'm glad i'm not the only one ppl look at funny when i tell them about not seeing the karate kid Being across the pond from me i'm guessing you have no clue what a chip butty is? i'd be amazed if you did cos its a very brittish thing. Its chunky cut fries between bread & butter. but i dont understand whats so good about a chip sandwich? the best sandwich filling is smoked chicken with bacon!!!! LOL Some Americans like Sandwiches with chips here, too. I don't get the puropse, when you can have chips on the side, but, oh well. its a massive thing here in UK. i literally know no one who doesn't like them. im glad ive found a forum with like minded ppl!!

ahh, ok. cheers for the advice dude. i was thinking of trying to make a traditional bullseye city, with the commercial hub in the centre surrounded by suburbs ( in the surrounding squares) rimmed with the heavy industry. not sure how attainable that idea is tho?

Thanks for the reply dude! i did have all 3 types of zone in the main city, and did manage to get industry to I-HT so had no pollution problems so i think im all good on that front. i thought i had a good balance of sim wealth but i always thought that the richer sims would live on the edge of a city & so have a bigger commute anyway? i might try & move the rich snobs elsewhere then! With the connecting up then is it better to get 2 independant big cities going then to join them up? that way they might be more self sufficent as i begin to mess with the balance of industy & utillities in them?
