  1. Hi guys, after spending some time reading the many guides on building highways, I decided I would attempt to make one in my main suburban city, and after following the instructions from "Haljackey's RHW Interchange Guide" I successfully built a stretch of rural highway connecting to my second suburban city. After building it and connecting it, I expected a swarm of cars to start using it, but as it turned out, no one even bothered to get on. Now I'm still a newb, so I know I am doing something wrong, perhaps my city/cities/region are not built up enough for people to start using the RHW? Another question and concern I have is whether it is possible to start a second "suburbia" city with just medium density zoning to get a bigger population much faster than using low density, as I had in my first city. I tried this with my second residential city and the zones filled up very fast, but unfortunately, so did the unemployment zots. I quickly saved the game, went into my new industrial city south of the new city, zoned a bunch of M-IND and waited a bit in cheetah speed to extrapolate. Saved the game, went back to my new suburbia, and noticed nothing had changed, and that the unemployment zots were beginning to increase and spread out. So now I'm confused and frustrated over these two issues; why no one is using my beautiful highways, and why I can't get my lazy sims to drive down the avenue or take the bus down to work. Any help would be appreciated.
  2. Suburban Planning 101

I see, will I have to uninstall NAM, install SAM, then reinstall NAM in order for both to work? Or can I directly d/l and install the SAM on top of the NAM? I downloaded the March 2009 version, but the instructions only mention uninstalling the April 2008 version, so I'm wondering if the uninstall only applies to that version? Also, what is the web address for the LEX, I cannot find it via google or the search engine on these forums. I can only find posts comparing STEX and LEX.

Thanks mate, I'll make sure I browse through that section first before asking any questions related to that subject. As for the Street Addon Mod, is that an entirely new mod that I have to download and install, or is that part of the NAM March 2009 package that is available for download? I downloaded NAM two nights before, and have been mainly using the diagonal streets to make my suburbs look less boring. I have yet to learn how to incorporate everything else. Anyways, I'll try using the "puzzle pieces" mentioned in that article you provided, and see if the homes look a bit more spiffy. Thanks again Swat-Medic.

Thanks for replying so quickly I'm not 100% sure but I do believe it was in the open forums. Regarding the second point, probably any of the suburban areas in the "Making Money the Easy Way" article. It appears that the majority of the houses popping up in the suburbs have a tree right next to them, which leads me to believe that perhaps the rez zones were modified to include different model houses? Also, can you clarify on what you mean by plugin? I am not very technical savvy, and I have no idea what bat, lot and prop mean when I look through the Stex files.
  5. Suburban Planning 101

After joining the forums I quickly began to search for tutorials and guides that would help me to understand the basics of the game and how to plan and build a proper city. So far, I am reading the "Making Money the Easy Way" guide by STomnibus, which has helped me considerably in laying down the foundations for my residential and industrial cities. My next quest was to find out how to build more appealing and realistic looking suburbs, complete with trees, parks, etc,. I managed to find 3 or 4 such threads throughout the forum, but accidentally closed one of my tabs and now for the life of me I cannot find that thread anywhere. Worse, I don't remember the name of the poster or the thread title, all I remember was that it showed some steps on building the streets, setting up the zoning (namely in a 1x1 fashion) and leaving 1 space between the homes for parks/trees which would pop up through another zoning tool or something (this is what ultimately concerns me). After reading 2 threads in this introduction forum, I noticed that everyone is saying that there is no such tool or mod that would allow a player to zone trees or parks to make suburbs look more beautiful, so now I'm confused and Really!!! desperate to find that thread to see what the hell s/he was talking about. If anyone knows the thread I'm talking about, or anything close to what I am trying to find out about, please give a holler, cuz this is really killing me. P.S. the thread in question is not "Suburbs: layout, ideas and design" or "Suburbs and Small Towns" or even "Suburbs: Creating Realism in Sim City 4" by STomnibus, all of which were/will be extremely useful. P.S.S. Can someone verify that the trees used in STomnibus' suburbs are planted individually via mayor mode, or en mass through God mode? They look absolutely gorgeous and really make the neighbourhoods stand out.
  6. Introduce Yourself Here!

Hi everyone, I'm Kev from Toronto, I'm 24 and working my way through school to become a Chartered Accountant one day, and I simply love grand strategy and civilization building games. Since getting Sim City 4, I have been glued to my chair, and have thus far failed to make a decent city that isn't drowning in debt. After finding out about this site 2 nights ago, I decided to join up, and after reading just a few articles and threads, I am beginning to see the greater web that ties the different mechanics and features of the game together. I am indebted to STomnibus for his invaluable guides and tips, MAKING MONEY THE EASY WAY being the single most useful guide I have read for this game thus far. That's about all I have to say at the moment, I hope I can become an active member of the community, and I sincerely hope I can find all the answers that continue to torment me about the game in these lovely forums
