Jumpthefence replied to simcity4fan12's topic in SC4 BAT & Lot Workshop
Hey, Todd's back! But I think you all already realized that... Todd: I'll get around to that industrial building at some point, but it's fictional and for a City Journal that will never be made, so I don't have extreme motivation for that one. As for scaling, no, I have not scaled it up 133% yet. I rarely do until I render, and even then I might not scale it up the full 133%. It's usually closer to 120% or in some (rare) cases I won't even scale at all. Sgt Pepper: I can't really make constructive comments on it at this point, the building looks pretty good. If course, it needs a roof texture, and the base's texture with the rectangles looks a tad uneven but that's just me. Otherwise, keep up the good work! Darknono35: Could we see a preview render? It's difficult to get a sense of scale with a perspective view, as units shrink with distance. It's looking pretty good. Now, the monotonous skyscraper! (The good thing about townhouses is that they're especially unique, but not being one to jump ship, I'll want to get this done before it's back to the townhouses) So, am I doing this wrong? Actually, that's a rhetorical question; what am I doing wrong? There are a number of things I have issues with: 1. Why are the vertical parts of the fenestration (I think the architectural term is a mullion?) so thin? I made them around .55 meters wide, plus the depth of .25, while the windows themselves are 2.25 meters wide. Those are the measurements I got, be my guest to measure them yourself. Unfortunately, they don't come across as defined in the renders as I was hoping. Ideas? 2. Why is the base so dang tall? According to my measurements, it's 250% taller than the rest of the building's levels. Hell of a lobby... 3. I have a window texture on that gets as close as I can to faking reflections. Should I add more contrast? How am I doing? Otherwise, there's still a good bit of work to be done here. And yes, I know the windows have more variations. Yes, I know the right side isn't done. Yes, I know the base isn't done. Yeah, the roof isn't done either. Expect more updates soon. Tomorrow's adgenda for me includes both working on 10 Hanover Square, as well as rendering my Two Bridges buildings. I hope to upload those before I go on my Fourth of July trip, but that looks unlikely. 'K C ya L8r Bye! -
Do I see tiling!?! The plaza sort of area looks like it has a tiling texture surface texture. You may have fixed it; I dunno. Multiplying the UVW by about three would fix it. It doesn't ruin the rest of the model though, good work going on here!

Darknono35: Damn! Have you every thought about how awesome you are? You should. Every five minutes. Can't wait to see it on the STEX! Sgt Pepper: 10 Hanover Square, huh? I'll have to consider that one. It seems like it won't be too difficult to model and it can blend in well with an average city. 22 Cortlandt is looking pretty good, although basic at this point. For the space in between the windows, I'd suggest reading this article by Jason. Even if you don't use it, it's an interesting read. As is the rest of the blog. I'd also watch out for tiling textures, but you probably know that. UVW Mapping, the Gizmo modifier, all that. Now, get back to your job at that Sonic Popeye's so you make your minimum wage in beads and Cajun spices, and I can eat crawfish and jambalaya with special sauce (Gulf of Mexico oil!) during Mardi Gras with my French friends! Hahaha stereotyping is funny!!1!!!1! Geometry: Good luck! I suppose I'll post a BAT... although it's nothing compared to... that... Woolworth...........Building........................... Alright, I get twenty points right off the BAT for making a logo that took me 5 seconds in MS Word! New stuff: Graffiti! Ventilation units! Roof access! Roof textures! Warehouse skylighting! Warehouse contents! Grass that's been killed! Now, I suppose it's good enough for my own use in a hypothetical City Journal that will never be made, but what else should I do to make it even better? That's all. Come up with your own remark here, I've run out of unique ways to wish you all a good week. -
Earthquake across Ontario, Quebec and New York
Jumpthefence replied to torontosubway's topic in Current Events
Hmm... I was out biking around that time and I didn't feel a thing. Either Western Massachusetts was out of the way or my attention span is really that bad. We never have natural disasters, I think I'd remember something like that. -

Can I export them as is? Speaking of townhouses... I can't do any more of them! Too... many... townhouses! But really, I feel like doing something other than townhouses. I've been at it since November (?) and I feel like a one-track mind. If anyone wants to suggest something, I'm open to ideas until the Two Bridges pack gets uploaded. The only restriction I have is that tall (or especially large) buildings make my computer, as well as myself sick-y. Vertigo is fun! I'm going to have a cutoff at 30 stories/120 meters or so. Ideas? In the meantime, I'm working on this fictional compound for a City Journal of sorts. It's not in New York City, actually, or anywhere for that matter. But don't actually expect a City Journal at all. As it says in my profile, I'm not going to make a City Journal, now get out of my profile. Does that make any sense? Forget it, just comment on the model. It's the McGraw-Pharmaceutical-Chemicals-and-the-such-Plant! It still needs roof junk on everything except the run tower, as well as something inside the warehouse (I was thinking about wares in there). Otherwise, it's pretty close to finished. Unless there are ideas to improve upon it. BTW, I'm pretty darn proud of those Fords parked on the grounds. The first time I tried to make a truck was the definition of "utter failure", but I did it! And this whole thing was done over the last two days! Yay me! Take that, logical calendar! Alright, I think that covers everything. Everyone have a great Friday everyone! ...Although for some of you, it's already Friday! Time zones ZOMG!!1! -

Yeah, you gotta hate when people get off topic, eh? BTW, today was my last day of school! Yay for me! Page flip, can we call it the rage flip too, in honor of the Great Todd's rage-iness? Speaking of Todd, I see you finally got that CML! If I remember correctly, you were slapped with a trout the first time you asked. I like trout. But back on topic, I'm trying to get these BATs done. On to the BATs! Comments, anyone? How's the nightlighting? I don't have much to say... St Patrick's Cathedral is lookin' mighty fine. Seraf: Welcome back! Brandon: Sparatic Building Creation FTW! Let's not try and get too out of hand, though. Once you present something, people will expect you to finish it. And that sucks. Everyone: I'm going to around so much from now on, you're going to be sick of me! Or amused! But probably the former! Have a great summer! Why am I yelling!? Et cetera! -

Alright, I'm not busy now, yeah! Let's do some BATing, watch Indiana Jones and play Scrabble! Elliot: The building's looking pretty good, I might make the wall texture a bit brighter, but that's just me. Otherwise, I can't wait to see what the windows will look like. BTW, what size lot will this be (or will it be overhanging)? Brandon: I suppose you're welcome back, I can't really keep you out. Comebacks much? Well since I don't have my teenage summer job yetquote> Do you make more than minimum wage? If so, I'd love that job. (nervous laughs) Alright, let's see how I'm doing, shall we? Hey, I'm doing pretty well! The only thing I'm worried about is the fire escapes. I didn't quite know how to make them look aged. I added some rust (about 1 in 10 pixels is a rusty color) but I guess you can't really see it. Right now, I'm thinking I'll just desaturate them until I'm happy. After all, a "rusty" fire escape isn't really that rusty. This is what you find when you search "rusty fire escapes" on Google Images. Not really rusty much, but very faded. So I'm going to try that. So you know the drill, all comments are welcome. Or if a bunch of people like them, I'll export them. It's up to your opinions. Everyone have a great week! Enjoy your final exams, some of you. Can't wait for mine!* *sarcasm -
Google map adds South Africa and Norway to street view
Jumpthefence replied to Fresh Prince of Wmbg's topic in General Off-Topic
That's great and all, but someone's got to keep those Norwegians under control! Nah, I'm just kidding, it's good to see Google keeps expanding around the globe. And I would totally recommend checking out Oslo- cool stuff! -
An answer found with the help of Street View. Too bad I don't tend to be first. Aaaaaaaand... OMG it's Michael Westen!

Originally posted by: Jumpthefence, a week or so ago I'll see (well, not see you, you know what I mean!) everyone on Sunday, Monday or Tuesday. It all depends on how late I get back Sunday* and how busy Memorial Day Parades tend to be. quote> Well, I kept up that part of the promise, except for the fact that I was a week late. Happy Tuesday afternoon, everyone! Although, I blame society for not answering my question about the parts of a model that go underground. I just decided to build now, and answer questions/find problems later. So, on to the model! I think it's pretty obvious that the background is, in fact, grey instead of black, in accordance with Simfox's advice. As you can see, the building is pretty darn near done. All I'm considering changing is the fire escapes, maybe giving them a more rusty texture with more noise. But little details, you know. Does anyone else have comments before I fix that detail and, maybe, export? Also, I'll have to repost some pictures of the other two buildings, but those might get exported soon afterwards. Simfox: Thanks for the tips! Aaron: I hope you're back into BATing, especially for this summer. It's gotten somewhat lonely, a few weeks may go by with only myself posting BATs. I don't have time to say too much, because it's been very busy for me since Memorial Day. Final exams, school projects, graduation parties, and I have to write a speech after posting this. Oh well. Everyone have a good almost-summer-ly week! -
Dang, I keep getting beat to it!

Manchester, England, UK? Edit: FAIL! Looks like Liverpool to me.

As a Swede, I'm actually quite sure that's Stockholm in the second picture. The snowy one looks strangely Alaskan, so I'll guess Anchorage. But I really don't know.

Sorry to interject on this conversation we have going here, but I think I'll raise some concerns. Ones that will be unsolvable until I get back from Pennsylvania*. Oh well, I suppose they have to be solved sooner or later, why not now? This is pretty generic, you get the idea of what color things should be based on random Maxis buildings I have in there. For one, the saturation does look a bit high, especially on the building 6 (going left to right), and possibly the two pink buildings, 1 and 4, (though that may be just a bit too bright). Speaking of brightness, how does building 2 look [the really short one]? It looks a tad bright to me, but that's just my opinion. The parapet tops on the roof access for building 1 also looks a bit bright, as well as the center parts for the roof accesses roofs on 5 and 6. Otherwise, I think these are coming along pretty well. In other news, I still don't know whether to use planes or boxes for the part that's below ground. I'm pretty patient, but an answer... anytime... would be great. Before I get really RAGE-tastic-y. I'll see (well, not see you, you know what I mean!) everyone on Sunday, Monday or Tuesday. It all depends on how late I get back Sunday* and how busy Memorial Day Parades tend to be. Have a great long weekend! *From when I get out of school tomorrow (the 28th) to the 30th. It's just a short trip, no worries. I'll be in the Gettysburg area. Not Philadelphia. Todd, if your house randomly vanishes, it wasn't me. -

Brandon: Hey, thanks for stoppin' by! Heblem: I suppose not... now stop reading this thread and get back to work! I command you! GuerrilaWarfare: Take a chill pill. Odainsaker: Cool avatar! I think it's time I change mine, eh? I still have mine left over from "that unmentionable website". On a completely different subject, I am a bit confused by your last remark. Don't brownstones have to be made of a brown stone? If so, what's the term for these buildings? Townhouses? Sorry to pester you, but I want to learn this architecture stuff at some point or another. Originally posted by: Odainsaker Finalizing school work has probably drained everybody away for the moment. Fear not...summer break for some is almost here.quote> Argh, I still have a month left! Is it just me, or does Massachusetts let out really late compared to the rest of the country? I think my cousins in New York and Virginia start summer break at least a week before me... darned liberal political system! Trying to give me a good and useful education! And, on top of that, state testing resumes tomorrow. [/school rant] It's obviously not quite finished, the facade on the left side is still blunt shapes and color, but you get the basic idea. I still have to add air conditioners, probably adjust the brightness of the roof access center part, maybe add some more graffiti, and, of course, put in the facade on the left. Otherwise, I might start rendering soon. But of course, I need a sign from The Almighty Todd on what work still needs to be done. One last piece of business: First off, I need to know some things about building underground. Should I use planes or boxes as the perimeter of the hole? I would prefer to use boxes for a number of reasons, so if I can, that would be super. In the picture there, I have planes in there as a placeholder. Anyone know the answer? Anyone? You, in the blue shirt? I think that's it. Everyone have a great week, enjoy the weather if you can manage to! Edit: Didn't notice Francis's post. Everyone make sure you read that... and stay on topic. -

Originally posted by: GuerrilaWarfare where is everyone ?!quote> I'm reminded of the Sprint commercial where they rhetorically ask why football players aren't updating their Twitter accounts. Why? They're playing football! Similarly, we don't update constantly because we have work to get done. Plus, we can't really update until we have a model to show. Patience is a virtue! ...and it's pretty difficult to BAT and type at the same time. Although I'll bet there's a way. Lucky for you, I'll show something. This is 110 Madison Street, right across the street from 109 Madison. I picked it because I liked the contrast between the short building and tall building, the ornaments would pose an interesting challenge, and the back has a sort of industrial look, sort of like a loading dock(?). I also wanted to try making a model that's partly underground. Hey, there's a first time for everything, right? As you can probably tell by the roof and left facade, this is far from done. First off, I need to know some things about building underground. Should I use planes or boxes as the perimeter of the hole? I would prefer to use boxes for a number of reasons, so if I can, that would be super. In the picture there, I have planes in there as a placeholder. Second, I just want to confirm the deal with LODs: From the Simtropolis Omnibus, Station Modding: Semi-Transparency and LODs "If you are making a underground object like a tunnel, you don't need to have the LOD below ground, if you do there will most likely be issues. Here is the LOD i used on my ramp: tracks, but thats okay because if you make your LOD underground to make the ramp visible, you will run into issues where the ground shows above the ramp." So, I don't want my LODs to be below ground, no? I assume I'll have to reposition them after Reseting them. And finally, any other tips would be greatly appreciated. But anyways, you all know the deal by now. Critique, comment, make Soviet jokes, et cetera. In Soviet Russia, forum reads you! Todd: Nice tank! Alright, I'm completely free this weekend, and the undergrads are in town, so I won't be doing much... BATing time! Maybe I can get a party together and have a bonfire Saturday. That sounds pretty good... Everyone have a good weekend! Have a party if the weather's nice. -
What the heck am I doing saying I'm sure of anything? ...I'm guessing... I say Quito, Ecuador. And I'm not sure of that at all.
-
@TekindusT: Close, but I'm pretty sure it's Belgrade, Serbia. Edit: Actually, I'm not too sure.

All I can really derive about the picture is the architecture, that billboard, and it says something along the lines of -niCred-nca, though a lot is cut off by the fountain. Since someone already guessed Rome, let's say... Florence!
