Honestly, i think your assumption about soot might be rather debateable...it is true that horizontal surfaces that face up (e.g. roofs or terrace) are affected by dirt brought by rain and wind - however, they're probably less affected by car smog, much likely a more powerful source of grim, that would start from a much lower level, and would probably flow from the road level upward (guessing:i came to this conclusion having observed buildings that started to show signs of smog staining on their walls). On the other hand vertical surfaces might be affected by rain as well, and they're very affected by car smog. Also, if i take your reasoning as trusted, and if i follow it, then also other horizontal surfaces, and not just the railings, should show signs of dirt, and probably also signs of guano... Other than this, i'd definately have to disagree about having a clean building. It is a fairly reasonable assumption to state that the building, in it's short lifespan from 1904 to 1963, had rarely any chance to be clean. It was built at the intersection of two extremely busy roads, Broadway and 7th. It withstood the first decades of the automobile era, a period when they thought they could burn gallons over gallons of fuel in their cars, and turn all of that into smog without caring the slightest about air quality. It would be also interesting to notice that coal usage was probably more common than now...

The railings all around the roof, and the roof itself, look very worn and sooty. The rest of the building walls do look almost immacolate. You'd need to find a compromise between the two . My said about the bricks was influenced by the reality of the old New Yotk times building, a building that looks like being a cut-copy of one tyimes square, just designed for a different location: It would have been much better to find a colour picture of one times square, but unfortnately it wasn't possible, and all you can rely to are old postcards (and the artist's colour palette, that might or might not be close to reality), or other kinds of guessings.

I think you might need to add an hint of blue to the white bricks, and also, maybe, to slightly darken the stonework on the base.

Ploping residentials with the extra cheat. How does it work?

Thanks for the link, Paeng - once i've known about residential situation (vortext), then i was interested to know about industry and commercial ploppables, and this fills the gap. -

May I ask on which basis and for which reasons should "that empire crumble" someday? -
Ploping residentials with the extra cheat. How does it work?
Francis90b replied to Drengs's topic in SimCity 4 General Discussion
Wrong - it might work -if you make sure there has been some other residential building where you're going to plop the new one - and also, if you make sure there are enough jobs available for the new residents. What doesn't work is that the building won't show any path going or coming from it, and you probably won't be able to place a My sim there. Other than this, and the fact that it won't generate any traffic, it should work as a "spontaneous" residential would work - it will use your power, your water, your schools, etc, and count towards your pop count. -
I stated that they were still in the works, and that the project began long ago - i wasn't claiming them as dead, this was not my intention.

Thanks for clarifying your points, however not all that i wrote in my previous post was directed at you - my last statement especially was pointed towards the general public, not anyone in particular.

This one should be written out of the list - it's been uploaded. It's Worthington apartments, on the STEX. Delecto has a thread on sc4d, the last updates for Costa Obzor (correctly stated as never released) are from 14/02/2012. Is it just my impression or there's a clearly written rule at the beginning of this thread that would ask people about submitting things whose progress is not being reported since more than a year? On the other hand, i could understand the fact that people looking for this BAT might be worried about it's future. The EL rail GWails was using there is part of a set which is being made (since a long time) by Buddybud. Also, bit of a suggestion for those who enjoy posting there: If there's something you liked, and that had not been released so far and that you're 100% sure it won't in the future, what about doing the job yourself? Would be a much more productive and satisfactory way to go, methinks...

This map lists it as manifacturing.I guess thouse buildings were built for both office or manifacturing, and were converted as needed. You might modd it as a CO$$ and IM building, the latter ploppable offcourse - having it as a ploppable IM would add some IM jobs to a dense commercial downtown - and IMs, well, you can't ever get enough of them in the middle of the game. -
Thanks for your post, Nolan. Your considerations are spot on, and i don't actually want giving up on those BATs - however i would like to follow my idea of perfection, even if i'm perfectly aware that without results, any idea remains just a fanciful delusion. The photo you posted, with a mock up of the rescaled-remodelled buildings: So, changes for each building, started with the left-most one, going towards the red one: 1) 20 John street: BATed widht 8,0mtrs, RL widht 24,92', proposed new widht 7,6 mtrs. 2) 34 W 38th street: BATed widht 8,0 mtrs, RL widht 23' proposed new widht 7 mtrs. 3) 36 W 38th street: BATed widht 8,0 mtrs, RL widht 21', proposed new widht 6,4 mtrs. 4) 41 W 34th street: BATed widht 6,0 mtrs, RL widht 24', proposed new widht 7,2 mtrs. 5) 13 W 38th street: BATed widht 6,0 mtrs, RL widht 18,75', proposed new widht 5,6 mtrs. 6) 26 W 38th street: BATed widht 8,0 mtrs, RL widht 25', proposed new widht 7,6 mtrs. 7) red one, based on 17 John street: unchanged scale and widht. As you could see, even a difference as small as 0,4 mtrs might be noticeable...when i rescaled the model to their new widhts, most of the time i had to rescale them to 90-95% of their size...still, do you see the difference? Now, you might tell me they look too small. However, if the buildings next to them are modelled to correct dimensions, that's how they would actually look like - if you find that odd, it's matter of habit and expectation, more than true fact. I could understand that this should spring a lot of objections, one of them, prolly the most important, that it wouldn't fit as expected with other custom content...however, i'd like to ask you a question: where ever we would be if we based our BATing solely on how we would expect things to look like? How would modelling look like? How would material tweaking look like? We would prolly miss a lot...

The part of the chimney that's below the top of the side wall should be done in the same material as the side wall. Also, the chimney needs a cornice of a different material on it's top (metal or concrete). Corner: As far as the corner buildings, you would need to consider that you won't have 16 mtrs anymore, but just 14,4, cause you need to subtract the sidewalk lenght on the corner side. That means that you can't put two 8 mtrs wide rowhouses there - you might either create two 7,2 mtrs rowhouses out of the ones you have, and then do further work on the side of the one that will sit on the corner, or you can put an 8 mtrs wide rowhouse like the ones you did, and design a 6,4 mtrs rowhouse to fill the corner. The corner rowhouse would probably have it's entrance on the side that's away from the corner, cause next to the entrance there would be the stairwell, and the side facing the corner would probably be used to give additional windows to the rooms inside. Also, your rowhouses have an L shape, this is reasonable cause they're W2W and this is a way to allow better lighting. However this L shape wouldn't be necessary on the corner rowhouse because one of the two long sides would have access to air and light, you might do a full rectangle there. Hope it helps. -

White...oh well, i preferred not to say anything about it, though i was split. While the building is white, it's not the flashy white of some Meier's buildings or some neo-modern (censured) - it looks like if it's a bit slightly toned down.Well, try looking how it fits in game, however i think you should tone it down a bit.- 2,347 Replies

Roof tanks are likely to sit above where bathroom-kitchens are. Right now you have the side wall, a small gap and then the chimney.I think the chimney should be integrated with the side wall.I often saw it in rowhouses recently - the side wall rise as much as it's needed, then it goes a little higher where the chimneys are. What's the reason behind pipes? Why they are on your model? What they are expected to be? Why they are in that specific location, and not another location? -

300+ Pages Sheesh....How many growable?
Francis90b replied to tellace's topic in SC4 BAT & Lot Workshop
I'm afraid there's not such a thing. Some buildings were released in packs, but those are usually small in size, often containing not more than an handful of buildings. -
Perhaps an iranian fundamentalist wouldn't have an hard time at all in some parts of this emisphere, as long as he converts himself to the accepted religion and myths, and put into them the same zeal he was used to put into his past beliefs...yeah, he would probably fit nearly perfectly.

Hmm, is there any way to bypass lot editor? Anyways, i would repeat my invitation to take my rowhouse, and put it in game screenies .
-
Yeah, it's zoom5. 5 of them would fill a 2x2 lot. I was told that growing stage decides the type of zone where a BAT is going to grow.Personally, i've tried playing a bit with the "capacity satisfied" (the number of sims that could fit into a residential building, or the number of jobs of commercial ones), and i've found them growing in lower or higher density types. I don't think, though, that model size is going to influence that.I can do an 1x1 cube, and then modd it so that it could hold 10000 sims...and the game will buy it. It's a real pity the game does not have something like "lower mid density" and "higher mid density", that would make it easier to grow rowhouses and apartments at the same time...however, i would think it would be best to have them as mid density...i understand your point, but who would like to see a slice of Greenwich village growing in the middle of his-her suburbs and exurbs ?
-
But, couldn't just the front door be bigger to what we are accustomed to? I beg to disagree, i think you should look at how things look like in streetview, and then base your modelling on that. If you've already done this, and it gave you the result we can see, then no problem - it just mean things are this way.

I took some references as the basis for my rowhouses. Those will be BATed as closely as possible to their size, while keeping a size that could make them useable without too much trouble. And, this is also what i'm going to do with all the models that are based upon some RL reference. This model derives from one of the reference - and it's BATed very close to it's RL scale. Now, you might paste this screenie into the game, and notice a couple of interesting things....i will look forward to your feedback. End note:The model that i've shown in previous post is also going to be remodelled closer to reference building scale.

There's some kind of glass there, and it looks like there's some hint of blue.On the other hand, it shouldn't look too different from the glass that's used on building windows. (Streetview)- 2,347 Replies
